Ruined wall and hill top wood provide the sweep. Mam Tor peaks over the middle ground. I was uncomfortable with the proportions of the B&W version, the presence of the tree and separation of wall and moor.
Everything in the gardens was late this year - after the Winter that just wouldn't quit. Knowing all the reports about bee colony collapse and the plight of Monarchs, we waited anxiously to see which of and when our delicate and beautiful winged friends would appear.
The bees were first, of course. Sometimes we see them on the very first crocuses when there's still snow on the ground.
And then we saw one or two Yellow Tiger Swallowtails in the northern woods. And then a single Monarch.
And then, for the longest time there were none. Not one butterfly or dragonfly.
But slowly they came - dragon and damselflies and clearwing moths, here and there. And then the little Skippers and Coppers and Blues. And then the Great Spangled Fritillaries in the new meadow.
And, then, finally, well into August, they all showed up: Monarchs, Giant Swallowtails, Easter Tiger Swallowtails, Black Swallowtails, Spicebush Swallowtails, Painted Ladies, Hummingbirds...and more.
And now it's as if they can feel the Summer slipping into Fall and they are EVERYWHERE - dancing and feeding, picking mates and playing, dodging birds and other predators. Anxiously trying to get everything done that they have to do in just the few short weeks that remain.
It's an amazing spectacle to watch and be part of. :)

Photographed with a Nikon 200mm f2 lens. This lens can create such separation from the background, with an awesome 3D like effect. Super sharp!
