Separation Canyon star tracks
On the last night of an eight day raft trip through the Grand Canyon, I took this shot of the night sky at a place called Separation Canyon. It's about a 2.5 hour exposure on Kodachrome 64. I had the camera set up on a tripod next to my sleeping bag so I could tend it as I slept. I've always been amazed at the variation in the colors of the planetary bodies in this image. Separation Canyon was so named because this is where part of the Powell expedition split up to find food and a way out of the canyon. The party that left from here was never heard from again, but Powell and his other water-borne explorers did survive the rest of the trip on the river.
