High Brown Fritillary - Argynnis adippe
This large, powerful butterfly is usually seen flying swiftly over the tops of bracken or low vegetation in woodland clearings. In flight, the males are almost impossible to separate from those of the Dark Green Fritillary, which often share the same habitats. However, both species frequently visit flowers such as thistles and Bramble where it is possible to see their distinctive underside wing markings. The Dark Green lacks the orange ringed 'pearls' on the underside of the hindwing.
The High Brown Fritillary was once widespread in England and Wales but since the 1950s has undergone a dramatic decline. It is now reduced to around 50 sites where conservationists are working to save it from extinction.

Common Dog-violet (Viola riviniana) is used in all habitats, but Hairy Violet (V. hirta) is also used in limestone areas. It may occasionally use Heath Dog-violet (V. canina) and Pale Dog-violet (V. lactea).
On the northern outskirts of Dubuque, IA, separating the John Deere Dubuque Works and John Deere Marsh, is CPKC's Edmore siding. A jointed rail, messy siding for CPKC's standards, the thing is somewhat awkwardly spaced out between the only grade crossing, stretching the distance between it and the north siding switch.
Today's subject is a merger consist of the GE variety, hauling CPKC 3-261, an extra section of the Kansas City, MO (Knoche Yard) - St. Paul, MN (Pig's Eye Yard) manifest, as it makes its way north, holding the main, paralleling Riverside Rd. If you look directly to the left of the lead locomotive's cab, you can see the tail end of the manifest still skirting along the shoreline in the far background. And yes, that's a giant antenna mounted by a magnetic base stuck right on top of the nose, wired through the cab door inside. That's one way to do it.

This is Låtefossen. A 541-foot waterfall in western Norway that consists of two separate streams that meet in the midst of the falls. The biggest challenge here was keeping the lens dry enough to get a clear shot – so much spray!

Adenanthos is a genus of Australian native shrubs in the family Proteaceae. Its centre of diversity is southwest Western Australia. Adenanthos obovatus is commonly known as basket flower or jugflower. Each flower consists of four united tepals and a single style. In the earlier flowering stage both the style-end and the anthers are trapped within the perianth tube, so that when the anthers release their pollen, the pollen adheres to the style-end. Shortly after pollen release, the tips of the tepals separate, causing the tube to break apart. When the style-end is released, the style springs erect, and the flower's pollen is thus held on the style-end from where it may be deposited on the face of pollinators like honeyeaters which can access the nectar with their long curved bills. Ynys Llanddwyn (Island Of Dwynwen) is separated from Ynys Môn by a tidal causeway. It has a good story
Dwynwen was a daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog, who lived in the 5th century. She and her three brothers were washed up on the Môn coast and attended a feast held by the local ruler. She fell fell in love with a young man named Maelon, but he tried to seduce her and she rejected his advances. When he tried to rape her she prayed to forget her love for him.
An angel provided her with a potion from a holy well. Maelon drank it and turned into ice. Dwynwen prayed for three requests. These three requests wee that Maelon be released; that, through her, God look after all true lovers; and that she remain unmarried. She then retreated to the solitude of to become a hermit until she died, in about AD 460. Other single women joined her in a convent on the island and (bizarrely given the history) she became the patron saint of lovers
So it is said. But her church at Llanddwyn became an important shrine during the Middle Ages. The holy well became a site of pilgrimage, at which the movement of fish in its waters was believed to indicate lovers' destinies.

I wanted to capture our latest visitor to our skies, Comet Neowise so I set my alarm clock for a very early start and headed down to Berry Head to see what I could find. I was lucky enough to get the ISS coming over which I captured having the camera pointed in a North Easterly direction and used my wide angle lens to get both the Comet and ISS together. I had a great night looking up at many things in the night sky and stayed for the sunrise too so more images will follow.

The three components that comprise a jaw coupling, sometimes also referred to by the brand name shown in the picture, used to attach a motor to a driven device, typically in industrial equipment.

Mount Ngauruhoe is an active volcano in Tongariro National Park here in New Zealand. 2,291m elevation. I have been lucky to climb this amazing mountain in both summer and winter conditions. Although often regarded as a separate mountain, geologically it is a secondary cone of Mount Tongariro. A very special and spiritual spot. Rather than making a more common wide angel landscape shot I decided to experiment with a telephoto lens shot. This created a very different way of seeing and composing the image. Interesting. The gorgeous lighting was changing fast. It was fascinating to watch how the colour of the sky and reflections in the clouds changed from deep red to dark blue over less than 20 minutes.

Posting images of slot canyons, especially from Antelope slot canyons, always gives me a lot of engagement on social media. So much that I consider them cheat posts. I suspect the dramatic changes in light and color grades create a visual impact even as thumbnails that they attract a large audience. This remarkable play of light and shadows, while impressive to behold, was challenging for me to master. When I first visited a slot canyon, I solely relied on HDR photography to capture the scene. While images looked good, it felt like something was missing. As I spent more time looking at slot canyon images, both mine and other talented artists, one thing became clear. It’s the shadows that make these images click. That’s why the HDR images looked ordinary, as they often by default lift the shadows. It also meant that I had to get it close in camera rather than relying on post-processing.
Here are a few strategies that helped me. First, Avoid the sky as much as possible in compositions as the light difference is too much to make sense in a slot canyon image. There are exceptions, but it is better to shoot the sky separately and blend it in later in those scenarios. Secondly, pick your bright areas carefully and balance them with the shadow areas. ETTR or exposing to the right is super helpful here, I often meter at the brightest spot in a scene and push setting until the highlights clip. A quick tip: You can usually push your raw images a little more than what your camera histogram suggests. And the last tip is to white balance correctly, have a grey card or a microfiber cleaning cloth with you, and get the correct white balance. Because the light is limited in a slot canyon, even the best cameras struggle to judge white balance correctly, and it’s hard to get it right in post-processing; at least, that’s my experience. On the other hand, the difference is extraordinary when you get the colors right in a slot canyon. And there it is, all my tips for shooting in a slot canyon.
Separate from my canada pictures, i will show also the normal routine (otherwise i will show that material for at least 2 years). This cuckoo I shot while she was chased by a male, but not a dentist. I never had seen a cuckoo before so I was glad i could enjoy the hunt that lasted more than an hour, wherein she sometimes posed gracefully, and sometimes she almost fell from a branch hiding into the canopy from her male perceiver.
2022-08-31, Day 5
Under a setting crescent moon, a wandering braid of Upright Creek separates itself from the main channel and finds its way down a broad meadow on its way to the Moose River, Mount Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia.
The descent from Upright Pass to this valley felt like something of a small miracle. We stood at the apex of the pass and looked down into a vast glacier carved depression, with massive amounts of ice still clinging to the uppermost halls of stone. The lower parts of the depression were forested, and on first inspection, the way forward appeared steep and comprising an incredibly difficult mess of twisted trees and rocks. It would take many hours to navigate the 2 ½ miles to where I thought we might camp, and the time was already past 3:00p in the afternoon. My spirits deflated, and I began to seriously question why I ever thought 4 days of off-trail travel was a good idea.
We began to pick our way down through the wreckage of trees, and it was not long before I saw a curious flat and highly weathered vertically oriented surface on a small diameter downed piece of wood. The maps we carried were produced in the 1990s, and these maps showed no trail from Upright Pass down to the valley below us. However, that flat surface could only have been made by a saw, which strongly suggested a trail once navigated the slope down which we stared, albeit how many decades ago we could only guess. Short, cool summers and long, cold winters with plenty of snow means decomposition proceeds slowly. Maybe that cut was made in the 1970s? The 1950s? The only thing that was clear was that a faint trail was discernible, and we continued to find the cut surfaces belying the work of some long disbanded crew of trail builders as we proceeded steeply down slope. The euphoria we both felt at the discovery of this long-lost right-of-way was immense, and it was an interesting indication of how much the uncertainty and difficulty of the previous four trail-less days had weighed upon us.
The cut logs and the old route were capricious, sometimes obvious and sometimes disappearing, but always trending downward and keeping somewhat near the stream that carried the glaciers away. We managed to follow the trail to the bottom of the slope and the head of the valley shown in this photo. At this point, there was a confluence with another stream coming in from a different short valley to the north and we lost all traces of trail amongst innumerable braided channels running overland and amongst the trees for over a ¼ of a mile. Wandering amongst the trees and wading through the abundant shallow water, we found occasional dry patches of ground and evidence of long-gone horse camps.
My first thought was to walk to the side of the meadow on the right in this image, and hopefully find dry ground near the toe-slope. I thought to push onward and find a spot to camp near a lake I had seen while planning the route. As it turned out, this was a poor idea, and it was not long before we found ourselves navigating piles of logs thoughtfully arranged by numerous avalanches over years past. Jumping down from one log I discovered I had incautiously plunged myself into a patch of nettles growing under some other, larger-leaved plants. Welts grew on the backsides of my hands and it was abundantly clear that horse packers had never navigated this side of the valley. We turned around and headed back to a horse camp we had seen some 30 minutes prior, and when we arrived, my friend wisely counseled that we should stay put for the night, and search for trail and find our way out of the valley on the morrow. As if to agree, the sun, moon, and clouds conspired together to create an enchanting display as we ate and nursed our tired feet. The sleeping bags called persistently as the light faded.
