Still older fossils document the genus since the Late Oligocene onwards. The genus seems to have originated in the Southern Hemisphere, in the general region of Australia. By the Pliocene, it was probably distributed worldwide:
Gallinula sp. (Early Pliocene of Hungary and Germany)
Gallinula kansarum (Late Pliocene of Kansas, USA)
Gallinula balcanica (Late Pliocene of Varshets, Bulgaria).
Gallinula gigantea (Early Pleistocene of Czech Republic and Israel)
The ancient "Gallinula" disneyi (Late Oligocene—Early Miocene of Riversleigh, Australia) has been separated as genus Australlus.
Even among non-Passeriformes, this genus has a long documented existence. Consequently, some unassigned fragmentary rail fossils might also be from moor- or native-hens. For example, specimen QM F30696, a left distal tibiotarsus piece from the Oligo-Miocene boundary at Riversleigh, is similar to but than and differs in details from "G." disneyi. It cannot be said if this bird—if a distinct species—was flightless. From size alone, it might have been an ancestor of G. mortierii (see also below).
In addition to paleosubspecies of Gallinula chloropus, the doubtfully distinct Late Pliocene to Pleistocene Gallinula mortierii reperta was described, referring to the population of the Tasmanian native-hen that once inhabited mainland Australia and became extinct at the end of the last ice age.[6] It may be that apart from climate change it was driven to extinction by the introduction of the dingo, which as opposed to the marsupial predators hunted during the day, but this would require a survival of mainland Gallinula mortierii to as late as about 1500 BC.
"G." disneyi was yet another flightless native-hen, indicative of that group's rather basal position among moorhens. Its time and place of occurrence suggest it as an ancestor of G. mortierii (reperta), from which it differed mostly in its much smaller size. However, some limb bone proportions are also strikingly different, and in any case such a scenario would require a flightless bird to change but little during some 20 million years in an environment rich in predators. As the fossils of G. disneyi as well as the rich recent and subfossil material of G. mortierii shows no evidence of such a change at all, "G." disneyi more probably represents a case of parallel evolution at an earlier date, as signified by its placement in Australlus.
I've spent a fair amount of time hanging out at the local ponds and occasionally I hear the Pied-billed Grebes greet each other. My Sibley guide describes it as "a drawn-out, nasal chatter, slightly descending and fading away." I vowed to one of my bird-watching photog friends that one day I would catch that greeting. This is pretty close - my first shot finding the noise source. The two came together, then passed by on their separate ways. Note the one on the right has the black-banded bill of a breeder. Still some challenges left for me - find them sooner, in better light.

The Spot-crowned Barbet is found from western Panama to northwest Colombia, with separate subspecies recognized west and east of the Panama Canal Zone. Like all Neotropical barbets, this is a striking-looking bird. The male is mainly black above, with black, yellow and white-patterned underparts. In addition, the female also has the face and throat entirely black. Spot-crowned Barbets inhabit primary forest at low and mid elevations, reaching to 1200 m but usually occurring lower. They forage mainly in the midstory to canopy, taking both fruits and insects, and sometimes forming small bands of up to ten individuals. They are also known to follow army ants, at least occasionally. The species is speculated to be a short-distance migrant in some areas. Nearly three months separates the photos in this composite. Yet it feels like much less in my increasingly contorted perspective of time. As a child I would sometimes spin in circles. I loved the momentary sense of imbalance before my senses fell back into rhythm. The passage of time gives me the a similar sense of imbalance. However these days the normal rhythm is never fully restored. I stumble from one season into the next with a failing sense of comprehension about the progression.
Photography at least provides me with a tangible set of way posts to mark my journey. My phone in particular offers an amazing visual tracking of life moments. I often cross through the camera roll quickly. It creates a weird motion blur where you can't really focus on a single image. Rather I discern only shapes and colors that correlate in part to the season in which the pictures were taken. Another trick is to zoom way out until hundreds of photos appear in miniature. Love seeing my recent life translated into to a mosaic, billions of pixels. Individually indiscernible, but collectively representing my daily experiences on the pathway of life.
Standing on the edge off this woodland pond the other day, I was struck by the cold and barren bleakness. I thought back to that brilliant October day when I stood in this exact same spot. The scene literally burst into vibrant and joyous color. This composite conveys that joy, but in a shocking, even disturbing juxtaposition. It put me in mind of the explosion of an underwater depth charge. Yet another unwanted time marker passing me by.
After rejoining NJ Transit's Main Line, NS H-55 runs grain empties from Bay State through NJT's Paterson Station, which was grade separated from street level by the Erie Railroad in the 1920s.

Saguaro National Park, mountain and desert region in southern Arizona, U.S. The park—consisting of two districts, Saguaro West and Saguaro East, separated by the city of Tucson—embraces forests of saguaro: a giant candelabra-shaped cactus that may reach 50 feet (15 metres) in height and live for 150 to 200 years. Established as a national monument in 1933, it became a national park in 1994; it has a total area of 143 square miles (370 square km).
The saguaro, which is unique to the Sonoran Desert in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, bears a white blossom (the Arizona state flower) and edible crimson fruit; holes in its trunk and branches excavated by Gila woodpeckers and gilded flickers serve as nesting places for wrens, owls, and other small birds.
