A "Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos" foi fundada em 1640, sendo a irmandade que abrigava aos negros e pardos do Rio de Janeiro. Naquela época, funcionava na "Igreja Jesuítica de São Sebastião", no morro do Castelo (atualmente demolido), de onde tiveram de sair por volta de 1700. A irmandade construiu uma nova igreja entre 1701 e 1737 na chamada rua da Vala (atual Uruguaiana), rua esta que, na época, marcava os limites da cidade. A capela-mor atual é o resultado de uma reconstrução por volta de 1772.
A sede episcopal, que já havia transitado da Igreja de São Sebastião, no morro do Castelo, para várias outras na cidade, instalou-se na Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos e de São Benedito em 1737, apesar dos protestos da irmandade (que, porém, continuou a funcionar na mesma igreja). Em 1808, com a chegada de dom João VI ao Rio de Janeiro, a Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos e São Benedito perdeu a condição de catedral para a Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo, mais próxima ao Paço Real.
Durante um período de 13 anos, entre 1812 e 1825, funcionou, nas dependências da igreja, a Câmara Municipal do Rio de Janeiro.
No século XIX, a igreja passou por uma grande reforma, na qual a decoração interna em talha dourada foi refeita por Antônio José Monteiro em cerca de 1861. A fachada também foi alterada, com a reconstrução total das duas grandes torres. Foi mantida a portada de inícios do século XVIII, muito importante esteticamente por ser um belo e raro exemplar em estilo maneirista (tardo-renascentista), em lugar do barroco que predominava nas igrejas da cidade.
Atualmente, a igreja não tem praticamente nenhuma decoração interna, devido a um terrível incêndio ocorrido em 1967 que destruiu os altares e talha das capelas, paredes e colunas. Tragicamente, no incêndio perdeu-se também o chamado Museu do Negro, que funcionava no segundo andar da igreja e que continha importantes documentos relacionados à história da irmandade.
O interior foi reconstruído pelos arquitetos Lúcio Costa e Sérgio Porto. Apesar da tragédia, o aspecto pelado do interior serve de demonstração da importância da talha dourada na construção do espaço interno nas igrejas barrocas brasileiras (e portuguesas): sem talha, o interior de uma igreja daquela época perdia todo o sentido.

Paddy has managed to share my thoughts most eloquently. A very happy Easter to you all!
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Travelling all the way from London, Cousin Paddington was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a long while. That makes me happy, as the more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Freddy Fox is made by Merrythought in England. I bought him, of all places, from a men’s accessory shop in Melbourne’s Block Arcade, called Mr. Wares. Freddy Fox is made of English Mohair with felt paws and glass bead eyes. He has so much charm and charisma that already he is winning hearts with anyone whom he meets, and he is kind and sweet, which makes him an ideal member of our family.
Cabbage is Paddy's Pug Dog. He was a gift to Paddy from a friend who also likes Pugs. He is fiercely loyal to Paddy, Scout, Cousin Paddington and Bogart, but seldom stays around long enough to have his picture taken, as there are always new adventures to sniff out.
Lettuce was a present from my two goddaughters to me to keep Cabbage company. My eldest Goddaughter, Polly, wisely suggested the name Lettuce since we already have Cabbage. She is very soft and sweet natured. She likes cuddles and warm laps a lot and like her older brother Cabbage she likes to sniff out adventures.
Duckie I saw when I was at a Sunday market on a stall of homemade knitted and crocheted items. She caught my eye straight away with her happy, smiley face and bright colours. I think she finds life with my bears intriguing and perhaps a little confusing, however she is learning.

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.
