Toronto-based artist Marla Hlady creates distinct works that play with concepts of utility through audio, kinetic sculpture and sculptural installation. We have invited her to present a solo exhibition featuring three works that engage with this year’s Space & Sound theme from a distinctly architectural perspective. This solo exhibition will feature a new version of Walls, a multi-dimensional kinetic sound installation that reimagines the gallery space as a moving sculptural instrument, Third Floor Radiator, a multimedia sculpture that scales down the Gairloch Gardens gallery in Oakville to dollhouse dimensions, with each room animated and activated as a unique sound object and the silent and playful Leveller, a seemingly utilitarian machine that is perpetually seeking balance.

Presented in partnership with aceartinc. with additional assistance from the Manitoba Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council and University of Toronto at Scarborough.

Meu amor,

Mandei uma revoada de borboletas para alegrar seu dia.

Elas levam muitos beijos, um cheirinho de chuva e de flor.

Deixe que elas se aproximem e sussurrem em seu ouvido "Eres amado y querido. No tienes nada que temer".

Love,

Chris

Dundee United won to send St Mirren into the Scottish Championship's relegation play-off spot.

Thomas Mikkelsen fired United ahead as St Mirren players claimed for a foul but Gary Mackenzie headed the Buddies level before the break.

Tony Andreu struck a free-kick from inside the box for the Tangerines' second only for Josh Todd to equalise.

But Blair Spittal's late shot gave the hosts the victory they craved, leaving St Mirren two points off bottom.

Ray McKinnon's United, who remain third and are assured of a promotion play-off place, took the lead in controversial circumstances. Striker Mikkelsen went in with a high boot on Mackenzie but referee Craig Charleston waved play on and the Finn hammered the ball high into the roof of the visitors' goal.

Mackenzie had to receive treatment at the side of the pitch with the entire St Mirren bench, including manager Jack Ross, furious by the call from the officials.

Buddies captain Stephen McGinn had a half-chance for an equaliser with a header from a Lewis Morgan cross but there was little pace on the ball, which was gathered by Cammy Bell in the home goal.

Stevie Mallan was again showing the type of skills that has brought about interest from English clubs and was inches away with a free-kick that ended up in the Dundee United goal's side netting.

St Mirren continued to drive forward and deservedly equalised before the break. Mallan whipped in a free-kick at pace from the right-hand side that was met by the head of Mackenzie and Bell was beaten.

Simon Murray crashed a shot off the St Mirren crossbar from 25 yards and United then regained the lead in bizarre circumstances. Keeper Billy O'Brien picked up a pass-back inside his own box under pressure from Murray.

The free-kick was slipped to Andreu, who drilled through a ruck of defenders.

The visitors pushed more and more men forward looking for the equaliser and they were rewarded for their persistent pressure when substitute Todd hooked home from 12 yards out.

However, the home side took the lead for the third time in the final minute when Spittal hammered home from 20 yards.

It was a cruel end to the game for St Mirren, who have two games left to get out of relegation trouble.

Look at all those weiners! I had to send this to my lesbian sister and sister-in-law (who is also a lesbian, go figure) because, ironically, they really have a thing for weiners. Dogs, I mean. Anyway, when I first heard about this "Candy Cane Lane" in Seattle's Ravenna neighborhood, I assumed I would just include the photos there in my "Seattle Holiday Lights Tours" photo album (later renamed "Capitol Hill Holiday Lights Tours"), having no idea that this stretch of street was so elaborate (complete with revolving carousel of Christmasy cutouts in the center island of a cul-de-sac), I took a good 30 shots while I was there, necessitating a photo album of its own.

These are from back in September - it just took me a while to upload these

City of Cullman Mayor Max A. Townson spent Monday enjoying a series of well-deserved receptions, send-offs, well wishes and accolades.

His first public appearance was at 11 am under the roof of the Festhalle Market Platz in downtown Cullman. The occasion was a farewell reception organized by the employees of the City Cullman. Townson steps down as mayor on November 7th after enthusiastically and successfully serving two full terms in office from 2008 to 2016.

Mayor Townson addressed the several hundred in participants just after 11 am. His spirited, positive and touching remarks drew frequent rounds of applause.

A large crowd of governmental, business and community leaders gathered along with many city employees, the mayor’s family and citizens from around the city and county many of whom are featured in the photographic series below shown here.

Townson made sure to include his bride of 47 years Kay Townson, his diverse and intimately supportive family, and his always reliable and trusted City Council members (Jenny Folsom, Andy Page, Johnny Cook, Clint Hollingsworth and Garland Gudger) as major focal points in his speech.

Following the Mayor’s words, Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry presented Townson with a plaque of recognizing the relationship shared by the City of Cullman and the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

Retired United States Air Force Colonel Ken Brown presented Mayor Townson with a large-scale photo of a B-51 Mustang. Brown also awarded the mayor with a personal air flight on board the Mustang when it arrives in Cullman for the Veterans Day celebration on November 4th. The Mayor was at his most animated and excited upon learning that news.

Mayor Townson’s long-time and trusted administrative assistant, Leanne West, presented the mayor an incredibly thick book of new stories, letters, personal notes, photographs and other memorabilia accumulated from the eight years they worked together.

Mayor Townson spent the majority of this epic three-hour reception event on his feet greeting, acknowledging and connecting with everyone who came his way. It was both extremely touching and deeply inspiring to watch the Mayor operate in his most natural public habitat. Even as he exits the mayor’s office, he once again conclusively proved his a man of the people and the embodiment of the Cullman spirit.

After very short break allowing just enough time to spend a few minutes with his family, the Mayor was back off to City Hall to prepare for the City Council Meeting at 7:00 pm.

The historic focal point of last night’s Cullman City Council Meeting at Lucille N. Galin Auditorium inside Cullman City Hall was the public farewell for the iconic, two-term mayor.

It was Townson’s final City Council meeting after tirelessly and enthusiastically serving as the Mayor of the City of Cullman from 2008 to 2016.

Council Pro Tem Jenny Folsom summoned the Mayor to the floor of the auditorium along with all members of the City Council (Councilman Garland Gudger was out of town and could not attend). Ms. Folsom then read this powerful, touching and all inclusive farewell drafted for the occasion by Mayor Townson’s indispensable assistant, Leanne West.

Mayor Townson walked off to a standing ovation from the almost 100 people in attendance.

Mayor Townson’s service to the community has encompassed the best of times and the worst of times for the City of Cullman.

Obviously, there will be more mayoral leaders in Cullman’s future, but there will never be another Max A. Townson.

The Mayor leaves an indelible, positive imprint on the past, present, and future of the city.

Send in the Clowns

Charles Marshall Vintage Photos

With the last in a three-part series on the YCA Graduation Ceremony, (ICYMI, we shared video highlights, a hula dancer, and now some still photos) I extend my heartfelt thanks and alohacongrats to the staff of YCA for all their hard work and send my best wishes for an AlohaMerry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season.🎄

I attended the fall 2020 graduation for the Youth Challenge Academy Class 53 at their Kalaeloa campus on November 25. Hawai'i Youth Challenge Academy O'ahu has been fortunate because they’ve been able to continue on-site operations with the cadets during the COVID pandemic. As I do at all of their graduations, I prepared an Honorary Certificate for each of the graduating cadets and presented a $500 scholarship for one graduate from the Kalaeloa campus. I also contribute a $500 scholarship for one deserving graduate at the Hilo Youth Challenge campus.

As mentioned previously, Cadet Kaylen Kekuewa-Wright was the recipient of the O‘ahu Mike Gabbard scholarship and also performed the beautiful hula dance. After leaving YCA, she plans to continue her studies at Leeward Community College, in the automotive arena.

I love this program. We live a few blocks away from the Kalaleloa Campus, and even though their reveille bugling begins at 4:30 am, I’ve yet to receive any complaints from neighboring constituents. Also, thankfully, I’m not a light sleeper. 😉

As background, Youth Challenge provides 16 to 18-year-old "AT-PROMISE"; students a second chance to obtain their high school diploma and become successful, responsible, and productive citizens. The Academy instills discipline and a sense of self-worth by using military training to significantly improve the life skills and employment potential of young people. The program's eight core components focus on the holistic development of the youth and include: academic excellence, life-coping skills, job skills, health & hygiene, responsible citizenship, community service, leadership/followership, and physical fitness. The five-month residential phase of the program is followed by a year-long mentoring relationship with specially trained members of each graduate's community.

The Academy was founded in August 1994 and is administered by the Hawai‘i Army National Guard. It has campuses in Kalaeloa on O‘ahu and in Hilo on the island of Hawai‘i. Each cycle, the program accepts approximately 150 young people. Since its inception, the program has graduated over 6,500 students with 80 percent of them earning their high school diploma. Keep up the good work cadets, YCA Director Sina Atanoa, and all the YCA staff!
