Starting signal at Merrygoen, New South Wales, a junction for trains working between Newcastle and western areas of the state. Late on the evening of Monday 28th December 2015, BRM002 leading SSR’s 4877 empty grain train to Nyngan prepares to depart. The signal and its associated electric staff safeworking system have since been replaced.

14.6.2015. This section of the GCR, with its fine array of lower quadrant semaphores must rank right up there in the world of railway preservation.

LMS Stanier Class 5MT 4-6-0 No 44814 (aka 45305) approaches the box with the 09.15 off Loughborough.

Taken at the GCR's Woodford Halse w/end.

Signal DW17 on the left is the down starter for the down main, while signal DW7 - on the right - is the down starter for the bi-directional up main. The bracket signal beyond, on the far right is DW2, the up home from the single line.

170471 departs from Stirling with the 1541 Alloa to Glasgow Queen Street service.

The triple bracket up starter signal is of Caledonian Railway origin and was removed when Stirling was resignalled in 2013.

But no chimney on the loco which was the Birmingham Class 104 2-car Railcar (50454/50528) set. The early and late 2020 programme sees a bit of a change with less steam - 2 instead of 3 steam journeys on steam days and DMU's midweek. "Normal" service is resumed once we get to Easter and on thorough to September with more than enough steam and diesel and events to make a trip on the train worthwhile.

The wonderful signal gantry at the end of the up platform at Redhill station on 15th June 1983 with a 4-VEP unit No.7812 forming a stopping London Victoria to Brighton service. The Coulsdon to Earlswood section via Redhill was the last bastion of semaphore signalling on the Brighton main line, with two boxes situated at Redhill, one visible in this view.

1 am at Semaphore hiding under the Jetty. We saw the cold front roll in. The temp went from 28C to 22C in a few minutes and the rain came down hard.

Another location I was very keen to visit on 14 October 2024 was this one, Bromfield. 197045 leads 1V39, the 10.30 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central.

Took this photo because of the old Alco switcher. I now appreciate it for the semaphore, just as much, if not more.

Little did I know that brown hares used their ears as a means of semaphore communication !!!

Took a number of photos of this brown hare using the car as a hide, I didn't notice the different position of the ears until I had downloaded the photos.

Screwin' around near home here's the local display at Campbell Hall NY along the former Erie RR Montgomery Branch

This vintage double blade semaphore was the only operating track semaphore your photographer ever saw in Florida. It was protecting the diamond at Mulberry on ex Atlantic Coast Line out of Lakeland. Not too long after, the semaphore was replaced with a commonly used color head signal.

Enlarge, and examine the signal. The lower blade appears fixed position, and the bottom box shows rusting . The double box base seems representative of the ACL semaphore, and on other railroads, too. Also, the cement form on which it is mounted is unusual, and has not been noted on later block signals on the ACL.

The GE U36B with road mate is also long gone from this February 4, 1973 capture. Note that it has white flags affixed meaning it was some kind of an extra move. The track and the Mulberry diamond remain, today.

This picture, taken from the western side of the railway at Corkickle (opposite No.1 box) looking north, shows the variety and complexity of signalling there in 1984. The sidings curving away to the left (above the pigeon loft) serve the cable worked incline to Marchon Chemicals, known locally as “The Brake”. It can be seen that the Brake sidings also have their own semaphore signals.

Remaining semaphores south of Mitchell.

Two examples of railway past still existing at Droitwich Spa station. Castle No 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe passes the marvellous array of lower quadrant Semaphores with "The Cotswold Explorer" from Tyseley to Oxford and return on Sat 8th Oct 2016.

The southern end of Stirling station is still bristling with semaphore signalling, controlled from Sirling Middle signalbox. In this view on 6th February 2013, Scotrail 170393 is leaving forming the 10:53 service to Glasgow Queen Street as 170460 rounds the corner forming a Glasgow Queen Street to Dunblane service. Opening on 4th August 1901, Stirling Middle was one of three large boxes that controlled the large station and the surrounding junctions. Two of these are still in use today, although the layout has, of course, been drastically reduced over the years. The Grade 'A'-listed box is of the Caledonian Railway's Northern Division 1889 design.

Because you can never take just one. Because I'm behind in processing but couldn't stand looking at me on the front of my stream, because I like BW sunsets, because trees can talk to each other. Really. They can.

OK, the last part isn't really true. Well maybe.

Must see Large

The magnificent semaphores at Worcester Shrub Hill will, we are led to believe, remain in situ for a number of years yet, but it is difficult ot get a decent shot of a train at this location without signal posts and other clutter growing out of the top of the train (one of my pet hates). On 17 April 2000, Centro liveried Class 150 numbered 150102 has reversed direction whilst working the 09.43 Birmingham New Street to Hereford.

Northern Trains class 150 units nos. 150215 & 150270 arrive at Kirk Hammerton on 17th November 2012 with a York to Leeds via Harrogate service. Much of the line between York and Knaresborough is still controlled by semaphore signalling.
