Photography use:

Selenium is used in the toning of photographic prints, and it is sold as a toner by numerous photographic manufacturers including Kodak and Fotospeed. Its use intensifies and extends the tonal range of black and white photographic images as well as improving the permanence of prints.

Early photographic light meters used selenium but this application is now obsolete.

I couldn't resist a B&W version, having first posted the colour. Silver Efex has 3 pre-set Selenium tone options (although in truth an unlimited number can actually be generated) and this is the weakest. I like the subtlety of this option, which is very close to what I used to generate with the real chemicals on Ilford Galerie fibre paper. Extra depth without the too-purple look of leaving the paper in the chemicals a tad too long. And I didn't have to burn a few layers of skin off my hands this time around! Best on black.

Selenium cell meter recently acquired. Looks unused with box. Accurate. NO BATTERIES :))

I just noticed the slightly newer technology in the background.

Update: Checked against some other meters against Kodak gray card and this is right on. So, I would have to say, for 99 cents plus shipping, a real bargain.

A première vue, celà paraît facile.

Taken with a plastic Holga toy camera. This is a photograph of a final finished print. This is one of the first photographs I sold.

Went to the zoo with my assistant, Amanda, and Nicole for a shoot.

Nicole is a professional photographer, so I found it only fitting to tone each image as you would fine art film prints. : )

Weston meters were made by Weston Electrical Instrument, started the late 1800s by Edward Weston (not to be confused with Edward Weston, the famous photographer). They pioneered photo-electric meters; their Model 617 was the first to be commercially available for photograpers; their system of rating film speeds, Weston Numbers, was very popular in the US. They were highly regarded by the pros (Ansel Adams used Weston Masters), and they did very well until the 60s when on-board camera meters killed most of the market for hand-held meters. In the late 60s and 70s they got caught in the pinchers between the two german meter giants Gossen and Sekonic, and went under. Their last designs (e.g. the Euromaster) was recently still in production by another company, but I believe that ended as well.

My dad passed away ~8 years ago. Recently, we were cleaning out the basement at my parents house and came across a box of old camera equipment. I intend to clean this up in order to display it nicely.

Please have a look at the other photo's of this in my photostream. Any suggestions on how to proceed to clean this up would be appreciated!
