The Silette L was the first Agfa camera with built-in exposure meter, it went into production in 1955 and went on sale in 1956. This exposure meter was uncoupled, thus had its own adjustment wheel, and – like all electronic exposure meters of its time – worked with a selenium cell.
After a bleach containing bromide and subsequent redevelopment, the silver particles have a coarser structure, which allows selenium toning without the usual fading to unattractive yellowish colour of Kallitypes.
A later iron toning, however, does not produce a clearly recognisable split tone as with silver gelatine prints, but a continuous greenish tone due to the addition of the two colours red and cyan.
A following lead toning changes this only slightly, at least cyan is reduced, which leads to a warmer impression.

I am at a loss as to why I have never published this version before.
I have been very frustrated recently. I am not happy with the "look" I am getting out of my two cameras. The weather has been goddamn awful. Thunderstorms every day. I haven't been able to thank you all yet. But hang in there. I am working on it!

In order to be able to use "normal" selenium toners (which contain Ammonium salts and/or Thiosulfate) for Lobotypes and Kallitypes without the usual fading and yellowing of tones, the print should be bleached (potassium ferricyanide and bromide) and redeveloped in any developer for gelatine silver prints.
The toning target was a split tone with subtle reddish shadows and bluish highlights.

In the coloured development with lith and sienna (glycine), highlights and mid-tones come out reddish yellow and the shadows slightly greenish. If this shade colour is not desired, it can be toned briefly in selenium. Because polychrome prints react to selenium toner with a clear increase in density, the toner should be diluted at least 1+20 and toned for no longer than one minute. With longer toning times the hue shifts towards magenta, but in such cases it is necessary to print considerably lighter, because otherwise the differentiation of the tonal values suffers due to an enormous increase in density.
For me, the real advantage of this development method is not so much the more variable colouring, but the possibility to show the lower mid-tones brighter than usual, in addition to a narrow band of deep shadow densities.
After selenium toning, this effect recedes a little because the colour contrast also contributes to the separation of the tonal values.
