One of my first series of photos that I shot solely for the purpose of making a print series. They were originally shot on a rather nice early Saturday morning drive in August of 2014 through the Cleveland Flats and Industry Valley sections of the city.

The title comes from a specific bend in the Cuyahoga River in the Cleveland Flats that was notorious for a lot of collisions between ships navigating the river through the former industrial hotbed of the city.

Selenium cell light meter , made by Agfa , Germany ; 1958 .

This is the first selenium exposure meter that Gossen introduced in March 1933. The meter could be delivered in a linen-covered cardboard case( Bereitschaftskarton) or a leather case. Here you have the very rare (cheaper) linen-covered cardboard case.

Back view of the Skinner meter. The selenium cell with the black spot in the middle indicates that it originates from the first series of selenium cells that Weston produced from the end of 1931 on.

The box of 35mm nitrate film the meter is placed upon shows an expiration date of April 1934, hence the film was produced around the same time as this exposure meter.

Here you see two Electrophot Selenium exposure meters with the name of the meter written in the same font style. The left one was manufactured by Müller & Ziegler in 1933 in Germany, the right one by Adair-Rhamstine, USA in 1948 (model 14-A). All Rhamstine selenium meters got the name Electrophot since 1932. Maybe the "name-conflict" stopped M&Z in producing other exposure meters. (if they pick our name, we pick their font)

Fomabrom Variant 311, selenium (KRST 1+5) toned. Scan from 24x30cm print

Fomabrom is a nice paper that takes selenium much better than Ilford, or Adox. In strong selenium it gets to a nice purple. I am going to try to split tone it in the next few days.

Couldn't manage to get the exact look of the original print...this is kind of close, but not perfect yet. Subtleties of selenium toning are not represented as they are on the print. Maybe it's just my Epson 4990 that is becoming old...

EpsonScan would just scan it as black and white, even in color mode (!). VueScan would do much better, still the scan lacked in sharpness and contrast, that I had to add.

Now, I think I need to master the art of print scanning...

The first photos from a very special, hard to get and almost unknown camera:

Olympus Auto electro-set (1958 - 1959)

1958

was the appearance year of the Olympus Auto electro-set

Olympus wrote in the manual:

This camera is the result of the gained experience.

That means, this camera is very special.

To me this is the very beginning of the Olympus 35 coupled exposure meter rangefinder cameras, but with many special details that no other Olympus rangefinder camera ever had again. Its incredible that this camera is so unkown even by Olympus fans.

In 1958 the Olympus Auto was then the only camera in the world with coupled exposure meter that when the shutter speed dial was rotated, the aperture was also changed to maintain the same light value, but when the aperture dial was rotated, only the aperture setting was changed.

At that time Olympus made history many times, and this one was the only with this kind of versatility.

Based on the ACE body an amazing camera was developed by engineers with no limits.

Again supplied with a fixed lens (E. Zuiko 1:1,8 f = 4,2 cm) the camera had got a coupled Selenium light meter with a hinged cover over the meter cell.

A buster-cell* could be connected for better measurements. The plug was on the front right under the meter cell.

The round ASA scale window was on the back, the ASA setting was done by pressing a lever and rotating the aperture ring.

For exact exposure, the shutter speed must preset and the aperture ring, according to the meter reading, turned.

Multi exposure* was possible by pushing a small lever at the back.

If the camera was loaded, the film transport could be watched in a small window* next to the viewfinder.

Rewind knob and camera back safety was placed at the base plate and luxuriously constructed.

The large viewfinder window with bright frame, combined with the coupled rangefinder with parallax compensation* for the best possible picture sharpness. A lever at the distance ring made focusing easier.

There was a special connection for fixing the carrying belt.

* The only Olympus rangefinder camera that had these features, and it was from 1958! Not even the 35 SP have them and the build quality of this camera.

I think this dates from the early sixties. The selenium cell still seems to power it relatively well.

Much photographed, it was still hard to resist. This was quite a dramatic crop from the full frame, but it works for me. I've found a temptation with my Cwmorthin photos to print large, but this has ended up quite small at about 8"x5" image size. With a generous border it seems quite pleasing to the eye. The viewer has to do a bit of work to pick out all that the image has to offer.

Normally something I associate with lith printing, I didn't let this go to full development, but pulled the print early. This helped prevent some of the shadow tones from blocking up.
