The fifth generation 2011 Explorer featured a unibody structure based on the D4 platform shared with the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT — a modified version of the D3 platform.
The fifth generation Explorer features blacked-out A, B, and D-pillars, sculpted body work, stepped style headlamps and tail lamps, and a variant of the corporate three-bar design with upper and lower perforated mesh work.

Subsequently, Ford offered the 240 hp (179 kW) and (270 lb⋅ft (366 N⋅m) of torque) 2 L EcoBoost turbocharged, direct-injected I-4 mated to the 6-speed 6F automatic. The I-4 engine was not available with the optional 6-speed 6F SelectShift automatic, and was only available in front-wheel drive.
The Explorer was available with an automatic intelligent all-wheel drive system inspired by Land Rover, featuring a variable center multi-disc differential with computer controlled lock. Conventional front and rear differentials are used with 3.39:1 gearing. The center multi-disc differential controls the front-to-rear torque split, biasing as much as 100 percent of torque to either the front or rear wheels.

The new SHO comes with Ford's new SR1 suspension setup with MacPherson front struts and a multi-link design in the rear. This includes SHO-specific shock absorbers, springs, stabilizer bars and strut mount bushings.
A 2012 SHO was featured in the film Men in Black 3 as the MIB's official car.
Visually, the differences from the regular Taurus are subtle. The 2010-2012 models were even more subtle, sporting a chrome wide-toothed grill, SHO C-Pillar logo and 5-spoked wheels. The 2013-current model employs a black grille with small honeycomb-shaped/mesh-like look, 19" or optional 20" "flower" design wheels with other 20" designs in later years, and SHO fender badges replaced the C-pillar logo. For the 2011 model year, Ford moved the Explorer to a more modern unibody, full-size crossover SUV platform, the same Volvo-derived platform the Ford Flex and Ford Taurus use although with significantly greater ground clearance. It is slotted between the traditional body-on-frame, full-size Ford Expedition and the mid-size CUV Ford Edge. Although outwardly similar, the fifth generation Explorer, Ford Edge and Ford Escape do not share platforms. The fifth generation Explorer does, however, share platforms with the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT.

How much is a pristine Maverick? $US20,350 apparently.
This time capsule has only 6,015 original miles, mileage not indicated on title. This was once part of the John Woodhead Collection, a private museum of only Ford vehicles. It is equipped with the original untouched 200ci engine and C4 Selectshift automatic transmission. Options include Philco AM push-button radio and the accent group, which includes bright drip rail moldings and window frames, wheel covers and color-keyed carpeting. The engine compartment is completely original and untouched, with the exception of the oil filter and battery. It has an oil change sticker dated May 28, 1987, at 4,430 miles in the original destination city of Milford, MI. It features the original shiny white paint, sparkling bumpers and trim, great blue vinyl and cloth upholstery, carpet and dash pad. The 6.45" whitewall tires are original, and the spare tire has the factory blue coating on the whitewall and has never been removed from the trunk.
