THE PROXIMITY OF THE HUDSON RIVER PRESENTED A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGETO THE PLANNERS OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. BEFORE EXCAVATION AND CONSTRUCTION COULD BEGIN IN 1966, IT WAS NECESSARY TO FIND A WAY TO PREVENT RIVER WATER FROM SEEPINGINTO OR FLOODING THE SITE. THE INNOVATIVE SOLUTION WAS TO BUILD A CONCRETE RETAINING WALL, KNOWN AS A SLURRY WALL. DESPITE FEARS THAT IT MIGHT BE BREACHED ON 9/11, THEREBY WORSENING THE CATASTROPHIC IMPACT OF THE ATTACKS, THE WALL HELD. THIS IS A PORTION OF THE ORIGINAL WALL
This 8 inch tall vase is made up of 150 small segments of walnut and maple in 8 rows of 18 segments each, which were glued in successive rows and then hand turning to its present shape on a lathe.
This is a bud vase I made from a solid piece of Madrone and some Purpleheart segments separated by Maple veneer.
Since columns in Ephesus were made up of several segments they were aligned as they were erected with the use of pegs. Sometimes wood. Sometimes metal. It appears that this segment had been bored into to extract a metal peg prior to the time the column collapsed.
