After securing his room at the Inn Gunnarr went downstairs to the tavern for dinner. During his meal He overheard some of the locals discussing stories of the western isles. Usually Gunnarr wouldn't pay any mind to exotic stories told second third or more hand by people who have never been further than the borders of their towns but, this particular storyteller intrigued him.
His detailed description painted a very vivid picture of the land so far away. Exotic plants, humid climates, smells and sounds creatures too fantastic for most to imagine. All in bold colorful detail. Gunnarrs imagination started to run wild. Picturing a scene so lively its was almost as if he had been transferred to the isle by a powerful wizards spell. He felt as though he could reach down and feel the lush forest floor. he could smell the fragrant flowers and hear the fluttering of the butterflies.
A grin crept across his face as he imagined the frolicking of the unusual creatures the story teller described as half man and half goat. And of course his mind wandered to this new delectable fruit. Gunnarr finished his drink and headed up to his room. "I'll have to get some more of those tasty Bananas in the morning." he mumbled to himself.

Salt Creek Backpack Day 1: Jason and I originally planned this as an out and back trip. We had secured the required permits to camp at SC1 (night 1), SC3 (night 2), and then back to SC2 (night 3). At the last minute, Lisa was able to join us. We met up in Moab and drove to the Needles District back country desk where we lucked out and were able to exchange our SC2 permit (night 3) for a Salt/Horse Zone permit. With 2 vehicles, we could now do this as a through hike- perfect! The weather was looking pretty turbulent and it was possible we'd have problems getting our shuttle vehicle back out on the last day... but we went for it. We dropped our truck off at the exit point and loaded our gear into Lisa's Subaru. An hour later we were at Cathedral Butte TH.
The hike into SC1 is short (GPS tracked us at just over 4.5 miles). After a knee pounding descent from Cathedral Butte, we were in Salt Creek Canyon- home for the next 3 nights. We lucked out and no one was camped at nearby SC2, so we had the southern section of the canyon to ourselves. We set up camp in the last bit of light and settled in for a beautiful night at camp- perhaps the quietest conditions I have found anywhere.
Four day backpack down Salt Creek Canyon in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park: This was a big bucket list backpack for me. After some last minute changes due to the health of a close family member and some luck with the permitting system, we were able to pull this off as a through hike with our good friend Lisa. We spent 4 magical days in the canyon and lucked out with plenty of water and better weather than expected. Including side trips to ruins, rock art, and arches, we covered 35 miles and saw very few people. Life is good.

There's a parking lot big enough for 2 cars. We each get a spot. It's locked up & hidden from sight.
To make sure Chuck's package was really secure, I used the string tie, several pieces of tape, and a couple staples. Someone suggested sealing it with a glue stick, but I didn't want to go overboard.
A building on the Bristol Waterfront, has these small metal sheets outside the windows - a possible sunshade or just a design point?
The Secure Social Rehabilitation Unit, or SSRU, is a program at Jefferson City Correctional Center in Missouri designed for offenders who are unable to appropriately function in general population settings due to mental illness and who require additional security. In December, the SSRU held a Christmas sing-a-long, and on that very same day, an offender graduated from the SSRU program as he was preparing for his release. Though shy, the offender wanted to say a few words when he was recognized for his graduation. He specifically called attention to Corizon Health reentry staff, who were in attendance, and thanked them for all of their help, adding that there was no way he would have been ready without them. Matt Sturm, Division Director for the Missouri Department of Corrections’ (MODOC) Division of Offender Rehabilitative Services, added his thanks by saying, “Obviously, your [Corizon Health] folks had worked hard for him and with him to secure his transition to the community. Thank you.”
George Lombardi, MODOC Director, added to the kudos by saying, “That effort [SSRU] is simply outstanding and has been over time.” In an email to Corizon Health leadership, Elizabeth Atterberry, Regional Behavioral Health Director in Missouri, also says, “I was also present at the graduation and was moved to hear the offender express his appreciation for the staff.” Ms. Atterberry also gives a shout-out to the team at Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center (FRDC) who work with offenders who are first entering the MODOC. It was the staff at FRDC who provided badly needed medical and dental care to the recently graduated offender, as well as the referral to the SSRU. “The director is spot-on when he says that the SSRU team has been consistently outstanding. Thank you everyone for the strong teamwork and collaboration that has contributed greatly to this man’s life.”
