The combination of walls, cliffs and sea allowed Dubrovnik, Croatia (Hrvatske) to repel all invaders for centuries. It's strategic location on the Adriatic Sea and it's secure position allowed the city to become wealthy. They never had an army or a navy, instead they used diplomacy and money to maintain their independence from more powerful rivals such as Venice and the Ottomans.

Psalm 91
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
3Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
4He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
8Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.
9Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”
I headed out as storms were all around us, making lighting conditions pretty poor. I only grabbed my camera because people tend to avoid such places in bad weather, and the birds seem to notice the absence of humans and behave in more relaxed ways.
I was discussing this with a fellow birder I had run into. We were noting that the woods were empty of people, and wishing each other some good birding experiences when this female dropped right down in front of us. This is not cropped. As we stared while she began excavating part of a stump just off the trail, I raised my camera.
Serendipity.
So successful was she, and so intent on food, that after a couple of minutes we were able to walk by her, and she gave a brief look as if to say ‘are you going to make me fly away?’ But we didn’t, and she didn’t, and she resumed her digging.
Of the twenty or so images I secured, almost all are blurred by the rapid-fire hammering she was engaged in. Again, as if sensing she was lower than usual and exposed, she rarely paused. I was lucky to get a couple of images when she came up for air and checked her environment.
T'was the night before Christmas
he lived all alone
In a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone
I had come down the chimney with
presents to give
and to see just who in this dweling did
live
I looked all around a strange site to
see
No tinsel, no presents, not even a
tree
No stockings on the mantle just boots filled
with sand
On the wall hung pictures of far
distant lands
Medals and Badges, Awards every
kind
A sobering thought came alive in my
mind
This house was different, it was
dark, it was deary
I had found the home of a
soldier
I could see that most clearly
The soldier lie sleeping, silent, alone
Curled up on the floor in this one
bedroom home
His face was so gentle, the room in
such disorder
Not at all how I pictured a
United States Soldier
Was this the hero of whom I'd just read
Curled up on a poncho, the floor for
a bed
Then I realized the other families
that I saw on this night
Hold their lives to soldiers, who are
willing to fight
In the morning around the
world, the children would play
Grown-ups would celebrate a bright
Christmas Day
But they all enjoy freedom each
month of the year
Because of soldiers like the one lying
here
I couldn't help but wonder, how many
lay alone?
On a cold Christmas Eve in lands far
from home
The very thought brought a tear to my
eye
I dropped to my knees and I
started to cry
The soldier awakened, I heard his
ruff voice
Santa don't cry, this life is my
choice...
...I fight for freedom, I don't ask for
more...
...My life is my God, my country, my
core
The soldier rolled over and drifted to
sleep
But I couldn't control it and I
continued to weep
I kept watch for hours... so silent and
still
as both of us shivered from the cold
nights chill
I didn't want to leave him on that cold
dark night
This guardian of honor, so willing to
fight
then the soldier rolled over with a
voice soft and pure
He whispered Carry on Santa, it's
Christmas Day...
...all secure One look at my watch
and I knew he was right
Merry Christmas my friend, may God
Bless you this night
The “Timepiece” Sundial is an installation, balanced and secured by three mooring chains, at St Katherine Docks near to London's famous Tower Bridge. The sundial was designed by Wendy Taylor and commissioned in March 1973. This night photograph was taken in March 2016 during my visit to London. The moving clouds provide interesting background contrasts with the Sundial and Tower Bridge.
One of the first local bird species to engage in mating behaviours is the Downy Woodpecker, though the Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers are also pretty active at the same time. Chasing, calling, and scrapping (between competing males or females) is a behavioural backdrop in the woods around Ottawa.
I am not often lucky with opportunities for photography with Woodpeckers during this time. They move quickly, and often are chased higher up. It was fun to come across this male, busily digging into the bark, early one morning. He noticed me, but returned to his business pretty quickly. A few minutes later a female flew in and off they went.
His business was at the junction of the trunk and the branch coming off to the left. He was about six feet off the ground, and I was able to stay behind a tree nearby to leave him in peace while I secured an image.
These geese are well looked after with a field to roam around all day and a secure home for the night.

To slumber to rest
whilst Winter's dull gaze
will wither what will
And here the sleeping giant
dreams secure beneath
Mother Nature's own

This is maybe my all-time favorite. In order to get this sunrise shot (on the day after summer solstice) it required a 3:00am wake-up. (OMG!) I was told you must be early in order to secure a spot. Hope you like it. Please let me know what you think.
btw Press 'L' please. much better on black...go ahead...you will see!

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

No ropes or anchors would likely have been required to secure these lovely ladies to the dock, during the early January cold snap, These boats appeared well secured, and frozen into place.

When the last leaves of autumn fall, the quiet season will be upon us and the trees and animals will settle in for their winter's rest. With our house and property securely wrapped and buttoned up, Marg and I plan to bundle up and watch another winter unfold in the foothills. This year we get to watch our new puppy experience the vagaries of winter--romping through the powdery snow and experiencing the joy of a sloppy mud puddle. Here we go.
