Quercus agrifolia, Coast Live Oak growing in Buena Vista Park, Vista - Southern California. Oak Woodland Habitat. This individual had a secured a nice location on the banks of Buena Vista Creek.
Coast Live Oak grows west of the Sierra Nevada from Mendocino County, California, south to northern Baja California in Mexico. Normally the tree is found on well drained soils of coastal hills and plains, often near year round or perennial streams. The California Oak Moth (Phryganidia californica) caterpillar surivives entirely on living and fallen leaves of the Coast Live Oak.
Coast Live Oak can reach 30-65 feet tall and wide. Leaves are evergreen and hollylike; 1 - 3 inches long with acorn fruit in the Fall. They adapt to many kinds of soil, as long as it is well-draining. They require full sun or partial shade. They are cold hardy to 10 Fahrenheit. They are moderately drought tolerant needing about 20 inches a year at minimum.
At least twelve distinct cultures of Native Americans are known to have depended upon the acorns as a dietary staple. There is estimated to be 39 species, varieties and hybrids of oaks in the state. Oaks can vary from tall and stately trees over 60 feet high to scrubby prostrate species barely reaching 4 feet tall.
Southern California has 3 canopy evergreen oaks and five deciduous species that mature into large-scale trees that can dominate an area 30 to 50 feet around them. About 15 species grow as shrubby evergreens. In general oak ecosystems have evolved to be summer dry. For this reason, landscapers should select companion plants that grow in association with oaks in nature such as coyote brush, laurel sumac, Mexican elderberry, manzanitas, ceanothus, gooseberry, and snowberry.
Coast Live Oak habitat is canyons, woodlands, valleys, coastal Southern California, Western Transverse Ranges, Peninsula ranges below 5,000 feet. Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Ventura counties; and Baja California.

The "lost animal" campaign uses a unique and eye catching tactic to educate the public about different ways that animals suffer from cruelty around the world. We've made it easy for people walking down the street to help animals by making a donation using their phone. Anyone can text to donate $5, or make a secure online donation through our mobile donation form.
If you live in Toronto, you may also see a "great ape mom" downtown with a baby stroller, handing out flyers about her missing baby. While some people passing by may find this amusing, it is designed to stop people in their tracks and compel them to take notice of what is a very serious issue.
We hope that the posters will raise awareness of WSPA's work to a wide audience and educate more people about the cruelty suffered by animals at the hands of humans.
Why did you choose bears, bonobos and whales?
Bears, bonobos and whales are all wild animals that are subjected to cruelty and are hunted by humans for entertainment, the pet trade, and food respectively. We wanted to use wild animals instead of dogs and cats so that our posters would not be confused with, or take attention away from, genuine "lost pet" posters.
Why is your educational campaign only running in Toronto?
Toronto is the most populated city in Canada, especially during the summer tourist season. It is our goal to reach as many people as possible with this campaign to raise awareness and end animal cruelty. Our intention is to expand this educational campaign to other cities in the near future.

It's 16 July 2022 - the weekend of the Dunwich Dynamo. It's the first year since 2019 that it is back to where it was with return coach & trucking for bicycles. We need to re-fuel we have an overnight cycle ride of 112 miles ahead of us.
We are in the middle of a heat wave, so we pick somewhere in the shade to eat. Even late in the afternoon the sun is strong and the temperature high.
A view across to our bicycles is ideal. We can keep a look out for them.

The Weapons Storage Area (WSA) at the outskirts of Mather Air Force Base (AFB) in Rancho Cordova, California was the munitions storage facility for the United States Air Force, 320th Bombardment Wing.
This facility was built for the secure storage and maintenance of the nuclear and conventional weapons for the B-52 Stratofortress bombers, which were stationed at Mather and were always ready in case of attack by the USSR during the Cold War. The WSA was to supply these bombers with nuclear weapons in a matter of minutes.
On December 5, 1977 a breach of operational security took place at the Mather WSA, in which a reported for Atlanta based Cox Newspapers was able to gain access to the facility by posing as a fencing contractor and examine the safety and security measures in place, talk with security personnel about their roles and responsibilities in case of an attack on the facility and observe and photograph the facility, including entry controls and weapon storage areas. The reporter was also able to obtain blueprints of the WSA.
Later, a series of articles about the Air Force's lack of security were published in the Washington Star newspaper as well as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, much to the consternation of Air Force commanders.
The WSA was controlled and guarded by the 320th Security Police Squadron from February 1, 1963 until September 30, 1989. With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the thawing of Cold War hostilities, this facility was decommissioned and abandoned.
Today, the WSA area belongs to the County of Sacramento, the bunkers are shuttered and much of the facility has been destroyed by time and vandalism.
Even with this condition, this facility still serves as a reminder of the Cold War and the readiness of our military to respond with nuclear offensive capability during those tense times.
