Galerie Bortiers, an arcade that has only secondhand bookshops within it. An excellent range of books available, though very little in the way of English books.

Entrance to the Galerie Bortiers, an arcade that has only secondhand bookshops within it. An excellent range of books available, though very little in the way of English books.

Run by an elderly woman, ring bell for admission. On the expensive side but she has some quite cheap cameras.

Inilah yg disebut VAR = Value Added Reseller, alias menambah nilai jual dgn me-reparasi barang bekas, memoles dll, agar barang itu bisa bernilai lebih ... gitu deh

The bar replaced a failed Indian Restaurant. Now the bar has also closed. The kiosk closed in July '07. The dealer in secondhand goods has been established in this location for many years.

Another vintage rather than thrift store purchase, from Painted Bird in the Mission. I can't remember how much it was, but probably around $10.

These photos are part of Pocket Guide to Hell's three part historical re-enactment, "Like a Secondhand Sea" about Chicago's waterways. The first act relates to a question we received from Miriam Reuter for Curious City: "How has Chicago's coastline changed over the decades?"

Not sure whether to cut into these someday or use them for their intended purpose (certainly would if we had a girl). The sunny one is 100% cotton. The pink, not sure.

My favorite secondhand bookstore is Books & Memories located in Syracuse, New York. It sells not only secondhand books, but also games, records, CDs, magazines, comic books, souvenir programs, posters, jigsaw puzzles, etc.
