Luke 17:26-30 (NLT)

26 [Jesus said] "When the Son of Man returns, the world will be like the people were in Noah's day. 27 In those days before the flood, the people enjoyed banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat and the flood came to destroy them all. 28 "And the world will be as it was in the days of Lot. People went about their daily business—eating and drinking, buying and selling, farming and building— 29 until the morning Lot left Sodom. Then fire and burning sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Yes, it will be 'business as usual' right up to the hour when the Son of Man returns. [1]"

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Not specified in the Bible narrative.

LIGHTING NOTES:

Jesus is the main source of light in this scene.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

Jesus (in blue outer robe).

Various people on earth.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

I drew the original rough sketch for this scene (see below) almost 10 years ago in 2014. As I have got closer to my 1,000th Bible Cartoon, I decided it would be a great picture to celebration that milestone event.

This scene shows Jesus returning to earth in his glory, tearing open the sky. The figures in the foreground have various reactions to the second coming of Jesus: some people will be delighted, some people will be afraid, whilst others might be shocked, surprised, resentful, angry, etc.

Behind these foreground figures are a number of people who represent the various activities Jesus mentions in the verses above. There is a man selling vegetables to a woman on the left, a couple eating & drinking in the middle & two farmers harvesting with scythes on the right. These figures represent Jesus’ words in verse 27-28, in that they are people “...enjoyed banquets and parties and weddings" & "...eating and drinking, buying and selling, farming and building". Collectively these people represent the 'business as usual' attitude Jesus tells us we will have, "...right up to the hour when the Son of Man returns."

This scene also relates to Revelation 6:14 which reads, “The sky was rolled up like a scroll, and all of the mountains and islands were moved from their places.” The visual idea of God rolling up the sky like a scroll was very powerful in my imagination, so I have decided to illustrate that idea in this scene.

I have always intentionally drawn Jesus so that he looks quite ordinary, "just" another man. As Isaiah chp 53 reminds us, “There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him [the suffering servant].” [2] Although that was in his 1st incarnation; his human form in 1st century Israel, I imagine that when Jesus returns the 2nd time, it will be in all his glory, so he will be far more un-missable then! I have drawn a bright halo of light behind the Jesus figure, & lightning emanating from his hands, which represents some of his glory in this picture.

I decided to have the eyes of Jesus looking at the viewer, as if he is asking you & me “What about you? Do you believe in me? Are you ready for my return?” The question is highly relevant, as people look at this picture: our answer to these questions directly affects our eternal destination; heaven or hell, it’s up to us, here & now.

[2]

Isaiah 53:1-3 (NLT)

1 Who has believed our message? To whom will the LORD reveal his saving power? 2 My servant grew up in the LORD's presence like a tender green shoot, sprouting from a root in dry and sterile ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. 3 He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with bitterest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way when he went by. He was despised, and we did not care.

Luke 18:6-8 (ANIV)

6 And the Lord [Jesus] said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Unspecified in the Bible. I have set this scene in the mid morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:

The sun (high & on th left) is casting shadows to the right of figures, buildings & objects in this scene.

Notice that the figures on the left are no longer in the shadow of the building on the left, as they were in Scene 01.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

From left to right: an unnamed man in green robes & a woman in pale head scarf. James/Cleopas (son of Alphaeus), Jesus (in white head scarf & blue outer robe), James (son of Zebedee) has his hands together in a gesture of prayer.

Two unnamed men are in the foreground.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

This scene shows Jesus talking to a crowd of people in a village or town. He is concluding his parable of the persistent widow & is asking "However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

The expressions of the various listeners are rather doubtful or even fearful that when Jesus returns he won’t find as much faith in people as he would like to find! Let’s hope that is not the case!

How to Treat Those Who Testify God’s Second Coming?

By Sun Nan

After reading this story, I was inspired and started to think: If no matter what we encounter, we always deal with them by our own notions and imaginations, unwilling to accept others opinions or humbling ourselves, but stubbornly holding to our own imaginations no matter how people speak, our life will be ruined. If we don’t settle our notions, it’s too dangerous. Then I think about brothers and sisters in the church, they are living in a state of passivity and weakness, and are expecting the Lord can return soon; but at the same time, they have many notions and imaginations about the Lord’s return. The majority of them believe that the Lord will descend on the clouds. Some of them imagine that the Lord will come riding on a horse. … Aren’t they just the same as the soldier in the story, who only believes his own notions and imaginations and almost ruin his life? We all know that it is now near the end of the last days. The prophesies in the Bible have basically been fulfilled. It is time for the Lord to return, and the Lord must have returned. So, we must find a church that has the work of the Holy Spirit and follow God’s footsteps. Some people, however, dare not go out seeking and investigating, thinking that there would be false Christs in the last days. For the Lord Jesus said: “And then if any man shall say to you, See, here is Christ; or, see, he is there; believe him not: For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall show signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect” (Mark 13:21–22). Many of us believers expound the prophesies according to our notions and imagination, thinking that all news preaching the Lord has returned is false. As long as we don’t listen or read, we’ll not be deceived. But, is this really after the Lord’s will? If we always keep to such notions, being passive and guarding against all the news, will we ignore someone who says that the Lord has returned and miss the opportunity of being raptured into the kingdom of heaven?

The Lord Jesus said: “seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you” (Mat 7:7). “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go you out to meet him” (Mat 25:6). And it is said in Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” It can be seen clearly from the words of the Lord that, the Lord will knock on our door when He returns, that is, He will express His words to rouse our spirit. Only those who can recognize the voice of God are able to discover the appearance of God and know God’s work. If we adopt the attitude of listening and reading nothing when we hear someone saying the Lord has returned, then we’ll probably never welcome the Lord’s return. So, we should put aside our notions and imaginations, seek and investigate carefully. Only by doing so can we receive the enlightenment and guidance of the Holy Spirit. For example, when Philip preached the gospel to Nathanael, saying: “the Messiah has come and He is Jesus of Nazareth,” Nathanael blurted out according to his conceptions and imaginations, “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” But after the Lord Jesus spoke out his identity and thought, he admitted the Lord Jesus is the son of God and the King of Israel, then he followed the Lord Jesus. Take another example, Samaritan woman heard the word of the Lord Jesus and then recognized the Lord Jesus is the coming Messiah and is Christ. Hence, only if we put aside our notions and imaginations and take a decisive step forward bravely, can we gain the truth, the way and the life bestowed by God. Otherwise, we’ll be the same as the soldier and almost get ruined by our own conceptions.

Futurists CONTINUE to deny that Jesus' RETURN (His "Second Coming") WAS/IS ON THE 12 TRIBES OF ISRAEL.

They have been conditioned, over the centuries, to deny Jesus' Words:

Matthew 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Fishwork #6: THE SECOND COMING

July 19, 1976

Venice, Italy

On July 19, 1976 Jan van Raay will execute, in Venice, Italy, a conceptual art work entitles "The Second Coming", an outgrowth of Ms. van Raay's 1974 Fishwork entitled "Fish in Venice." The artist will sign and number 100 "Fish in Venice" photo-postacrds and address the cards to herself. A note attached to the cards, printed in English, German, and French, will state: THIS IS AN ART PROCESS. THIS CARD IS FREE. PLEASE RETURN IT (OR A SUBSTITUTE) TO THE ARTIST WITH ANY MESSAGE. THANK YOU. Ms. van Raay will then proceed to various sites in Venice which have souvenir post card racks. She will place her "Fish in Venice" postcards among the souvenir cards; photograph each rack at its location; record the exact time of placement, and the numbers of the cards, to complete her documentation. She will continue this process until all of the 100 cards have been distributed throughout the city of Venice. "The Second Coming" will then complete itself.

39 of the postcards were returned to me. 8 people sent other things. The results were published in a self-made book "Second Coming."

Hello brothers and sisters of Our Daily Devotionals,

Nowadays disasters are getting worse and worse all over the world and the situation in every country is very tense. The prophecies in the Bible of the Lord’s second coming have basically been fulfilled, yet I have still not welcomed the Lord. I’m afraid that I will be abandoned by the Lord. Therefore, I’d like to ask for your advice: What should I do to greet the Lord’s second coming?

Jingxing

Hello Sister Jingxing:

The question that you asked is exactly the same one that all the brothers and sisters who are desperately waiting for the Lord’s return are concerned with. If we want to welcome the Lord’s coming, the crucial point is to pay attention to hearing His voice and recognizing His voice from His words. Only then can we welcome His appearance and follow the Lamb’s footsteps. The Lord Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Rev 3:20). And it says many times in Revelation, “He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” (Rev 2-3). The Lord Jesus also said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (Jhn 10:27). From these prophecies, we can see clearly that when the Lord Jesus returns, He will speak again, and that God’s sheep will hear His voice and come out to welcome Him and be raptured before His throne.

Let’s look back at Peter. From the words and work of the Lord Jesus, he recognized that the Lord Jesus was Christ, the son of God, so he was able to know the Lord Jesus and follow Him. And the woman of Samaria, according to the words the Lord Jesus spoke to her, knew that He was the coming Messiah. Nathanael didn’t acknowledge the Lord Jesus at first, but when he interacted with the Lord, he recognized through His words that the Lord Jesus was Christ. As we can see, all of them could follow God’s footsteps and know that the Lord Jesus is God because they recognized God’s words and work.

We believers all know that the way which the Lord Jesus preached, the word He expressed, the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven which He revealed, and the demands which He made of us humans were all the truth, all God’s own voice, and were all manifestations of God’s life disposition and all that He has and is. The miracles He performed—healing the sick, casting out demons, calming the wind and sea, feeding five thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish, and raising the dead—were all manifestations of God’s own authority and power, which no created man is possessed of or capable of. Those that sought the truth at the time, like Peter, John, Matthew, and Nathanael, recognized from the Lord Jesus’ word and work that He is the promised Messiah, and so followed Him and received His salvation. Whereas the Jewish Pharisees, despite hearing the Lord Jesus’ sermons and seeing Him perform miracles, they still clung to the letters of the Bible, thinking that when God came He should be called Messiah and that He would come to rule and lead them to break free from the rule of the Roman government. However, when the Lord Jesus came, He wasn’t called Messiah, wasn’t born in the palace and didn’t act as their king. Moreover, from the outside, He was just an ordinary person with no power or stature, not in line with their conceptions and imaginations. As a result, they denied the Lord Jesus, wildly condemned and resisted Him, and in the end, they committed the greatest of sins in nailing the Lord Jesus to the cross. The lesson of the Pharisees calls for deep reflection!

Those who truly believe in God and love the truth don’t pay attention to the external formalities but instead they focus on hearing God’s voice. As long as they hear God’s voice, they will seek and examine immediately, recognize God from His utterances and follow Him. Such people will thus attain God’s praise. Conversely, those snobs who only seek bread to satisfy hunger and focus on power and status, when seeing that God’s appearance and work is not in accordance with their conceptions, refuse to listen to God’s voice and even wantonly condemn and resist. Such people will never welcome the Lord’s return.

The Lord Jesus warned us, “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go you out to meet him” (Mat 25:6). We don’t know the way the Lord will knock at our doors. Maybe from the Internet or through hearing the gospel from the brothers and sisters around us or our relatives and friends, we will hear God’s voice and see His words to all the churches. So, if we want to welcome God’s appearance, no matter what way the Lord knocks on our doors, no matter whether or not the way is in line with our conceptions and imaginations, we should be the wise virgins and humbly seek and investigate and listen out for God’s voice. We must not hold on to our conceptions and imaginations or blindly listen to rumors and thus refuse to investigate. If we do so, we will miss the chance to welcome the Lord and be raptured into the heavenly kingdom. God is faithful. Those who sincerely long for His appearance will surely be able to hear His voice, be raised up before His throne and attend the feast of the Lamb.

Sister Jingxing, I hope that my fellowshiping can help you. If there is anything you don’t understand, please let me know, and we can fellowship again. May the Lord lead us to welcome the appearance of God soon.
