For evangelist Dewey Cooper, who over two decades built dozens of these warning signs next to rural Kentucky roads, it was indeed the end. He met his maker on April 22, 2016 at the ripe age of 93.

 

Having just learned of his passing, I looked back at my photos because I remember stopping to photograph at least one of his signs. Here is a photo of one taken a week before he passed.

Fall Semester 2010 - Art 235/Intro to Photography. This course has two sections - Analog photography (B&W, Manual Camera) with photo developing (in the darkroom) and some digital photo editing. All editing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS5.

In What Way Will the Second Coming of Jesus Christ Happen?

 

We Christians all know that when Jesus Christ descends for the second time, He will receive us so that we can be with Him. This is the promise that the Lord has made to us, and also is the greatest longing for all Christians. So welcoming the second coming of Jesus Christ is the most important matter of us believers’ lives. But to welcome the Lord, we must first know in what way His second coming will happen. If we are not clear about this, then we will be apt to miss the second coming of Jesus Christ and lose the opportunity to enter into the kingdom of heaven for all of eternity. Let’s fellowship about this topic today.

 

In what method will the Lord appear when He descends for the second time in the last days? I believe most people think that when Jesus Christ returns He will descend upon a cloud and will be seen by everyone, because the Bible predicts, “You men of Galilee, why stand you gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30). Therefore, we keep watching the skies for years and waiting foolishly for that joyful day when the Lord suddenly returns on a white cloud to take us. However, so many years have passed, but we never see Jesus Christ descending on a cloud. Actually, if we examine the Bible’s prophecies regarding the second coming of Jesus Christ closely, we can readily discover that there is not just the “descend with the clouds” prophecy, but also prophecies like that the Lord will descend secretly. For instance, Revelation 3:3, “If therefore you shall not watch, I will come on you as a thief, and you shall not know what hour I will come on you.” Revelation 16:15, “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.” And Mark 13:32, “But of that day and that hour knows no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.” These prophecies mention that the Lord will come as a thief. “As a thief” means coming secretly, quietly and no one will know. Furthermore, in many parts of the Bible it is predicted that the second coming of Jesus Christ will be the “coming of the Son of man,” as it says in Luke 17:24–25: “For as the lightning, that lightens out of the one part under heaven, shines to the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in His day. But first must He suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.” The “Son of man” mentioned here refers to someone born of a human and who is possessed of normal humanity, like Jesus Christ in the flesh who lived a normal life, ate and lived alongside man, really and truly gave sermons, and so on. Anyone that is a spiritual body cannot be called the Son of man. Such as Jehovah God, the resurrected Jesus Christ, and angels—they are all spiritual bodies and thus cannot be called the “Son of man.” Besides, we know that when Jesus Christ became flesh in the form of the Son of man and did His work in the land of Judea, He was rejected and condemned by the Jewish people, and was nailed to the cross, experiencing a lot of suffering. And this verse mentions “be rejected of this generation”, which proves that when the Lord returns in the last days, He will be rejected by this generation. If He openly descended with the clouds, everyone would tremble with fear and dare not to resist Him. That way, He definitely wouldn’t endure a lot of suffering, much less be rejected by this generation. So, the Lord will return by descending in secret as the incarnated Son of man, to perform His works and appear amongst mankind.

The Second Coming of Jesus | Gospel Movies | "Disclose the Mystery About the Bible"

 

She believed in the Lord from childhood. At 18, she entered a theological school. In her 30’s, she became one of the leaders of a house church in Shanxi Province, China. For a long time, the Bible had a holy place and supreme authority in her heart. She thought that one could only know God and find God’s footsteps in the Bible. Thus, she devoted herself to reading and studying the Bible. However, there were still many mysteries in the Bible which puzzled her. Until one day….

Title of this is a reference to the King James Version of 1 Corinthians 13:12, which reads, "For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." According to answers.com, the meaning of the verse is, To see "through a glass" -- a mirror -- "darkly" is to have an obscure or imperfect vision of reality. The expression comes from the writings of the Apostle Paul; he explains that we do not now see clearly, but at the end of time, we will do so.

 

The pictures within the square represent obscure or imperfect vision of reality. The whole thing itself -- the three dimensional square and the images in it -- is inspired by psychedelic rock band Traffic's CD covers for the albums The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory. I guess the whole thing could be psychedelic in a way. Guess the images are familiar as well as not so familiar to the public. The beetle with the face on its back and the creature with a face and two legs both represent uncertainty because perople are uncertain as to what the future of this nation looks like, except for maybe looking like something surreal like the two images do. The cross -- being the centerpiece -- not only represents Christianity, but also the return, or second coming, of Christ. It has to do with the fact that at the end of time, we'll see clearly even though we may not at the moment. The gun represents war these day and its effect on the economy. Those fighting for this country probably shoot to kill, but I wonder if they shoot to spend for the government to spend more as well. And the moon and the "Z" on the four circles that are close to each other both represent solitude and separation from chaos. The latter perhaps being an allegory to God because when His people spend time with Him, especially indoors, they are typically, in a good way, cut off from this corrupt world. Think I explained it all pretty well.

Apparently, when the Messiah has his Second Coming, he'll walk out through a special, otherwise locked gate in the old city of Jerusalem, and the first place he'll come to is the Mount of Olives. Hence, all those buried there will be the first to be resurrected from the dead and saved.

 

Unsurprisingly, it's quite an expensive place to have a funeral.

"‘See that you are dressed for action and have your lamps lit. Be like men waiting for their master to return from the wedding feast, ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks. Happy those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. I tell you solemnly, he will put on an apron, sit them down at table and wait on them. It may be in the second watch he comes, or in the third, but happy those servants if he finds them ready. You may be quite sure of this, that if the householder had known at what hour the burglar would come, he would not have let anyone break through the wall of his house. Why Did the Jews Yearn for the Coming of the Messiah yet Oppose Him When He Truly Came?

The Pharisees, chief priests, and scribes were all the leaders of the religious world that held authority, prestige and position; they appeared pious, were well-versed in the Bible, were very familiar with the law, and served God in the temple for generations. Because the Jews worshiped power and status, they thought that, since the chief priests, scribes and the Pharisees had believed in God for a long time and had read the Bible for many years, they must be able to recognize the Messiah when He came, and thereby following them would not be wrong. Thus when the blind and ignorant Pharisees relied on their own imagination and conceptions to deny that the Lord Jesus was the Messiah and even to condemn and blaspheme the Lord Jesus, the Jews followed them in doing the same. Just as when the Pharisees said that the Lord Jesus cast out devils through Beelzebub, chief of the devils, the Jews thought that their condemnations couldn’t possibly be wrong, and thus followed them to condemn Him. Jews Yearn for the Coming of the Messiah yet Oppose HimEven when the chief priests yelled out to nail the Lord Jesus to the cross, the Jews still blindly played along with them, as recorded in John 19:6–7, “When the chief priests therefore and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, Crucify Him, crucify Him. Pilate said to them, Take you Him, and crucify Him: for I find no fault in Him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.” The Jews did not apply their discernment to what the chief priests said. When the chief priests said that Jesus should be crucified, the Jews chimed in and used the law to convict Him, following the chief priests in resisting God. And they even made the vow that the sin would be on them and their descendants, with the result that their offspring fled to countries around the world and many of them were killed.

This large window of the Second Coming of Christ dominates the right transept of Basel's cathedral, the Basler Munster. Although the Munster was completed in the 15th century the window only dates to the 19th century: all the original medieval windows were destroyed during the Protestant Reformation in the 1520s/1530s.
