Day 354:

I would love to come back to Earth 5-10 years after the extinction of the human race and just see what kind of shape the Earth is in, to see what would be left as a reminder of our existence.

Wisteria cluster, from my back garden arch, a true delight. (Best viewed on black)

This started out as a cutting of a Honeysuckle in the garden, but it didn't seem to grow and eventually appeared to be dead. We were going to dump it in the compost bin when I noticed what looked like rootlets at the base.

My wife re-potted it and sure enough, two little green leaves appeared.

To give a sense of scale, the leaf on the left is just a tiny bit less than 5mm long.

The twig will eventually be cut back if the leaves continue to grow.

It seems perfectly happy sitting inside on the window ledge of a spare room.

If you give things a chance, often they will grow.

12/01/09 – Day 335 of 365

First day of December! Jackie called me on her cell to tell me the moon was the biggest she had ever seen it! I grabbed my camera and drove to where I could photograph it. Sadly, I missed the moon when it was at its largest! At the time, I was a little distracted thinking of my other daughter Rachel (in boot camp) as I was mindlessly clicking away. In light of my thoughts at the time, I am dedicating this image to her.

The title is a lyric from the song "Second Chance" by Shinedown. As the lead singer Brent Smith explained it: "…it's about my mother and my father, and about the day I said goodbye to them…" and how saying good bye is the second chance. This could definitely be a song written by or for Rachel.

Day 274:

September,

Low blow September, low blow. You brought something I never had to really deal with yet, hatful and negative comments. I also learned a few things this month so it looks like you didn't get your way. Too bad, so sad.

Just a heads up to October, November and December, you might as well not even try. I'm too close and nothing is going to stop me from completing this.

Well, another year comes to a close, and for many of us it has been one filled with life changing challenges. I can't begin to express the encouragement so many of you have been to me during a very challenging time this past year when my loving wife of 33 years slipped from my presence. Thank you for encouraging me.

Today is a reminder of a different beginning for me... one that started 39 years ago. Being 16 and filled with more than a few wild oats, I got myself into a situation where I had to answer a dare with actions concerning riding a tobogan (sled) down the backside of a mountain with no previous trail... being young and invincible I was up for the challenge and at the last minute so was a young girl from the group that wanted to tag along with this crazy highschooler... well, half way down the hill we went over a small cliff. I cracked two ribs, dislocated my left leg at the hip socket and suffered sublexation to several discs in my low back from the inpact of the girl crushing into me. Not too bad, so after getting help to reset my leg I rode down again (alone) and avoided the cliff just to prove how totally stupid I was... Well, long story short, the girl started have stomach pains and had to go to the hospital. I felt responsible (duh) so I rode in the ambulance with her. Several days later on new years eve, (she was still in the hospital with internal injuries) I was on crutches and went to a service at the local church where the kids were from the group that was up in the snow. Three things motivated me to go... free food, cute girls, and I wanted to appoligize to the girls parents that got hurt riding down the hill with me. The girl's dad turned out to be the pastor for the church and after appoligizing to him he invited me to stay for the special service they were having to celebrate the new year. I stayed because there was several cute girls in attendance...

At 12 midnite I got up on my crutches and walked down to the front of that church and asked God to forgive my sins and I asked Jesus to take control of the life that I was rapidly distroying... well, for me the rest is history... my history... I have no idea where God plans to take me this next year, but I am making myself available... that's all he's ever asked me to do...

This sunset shows the ending of a day... and the prospect of a new beginning... don't be afraid to take positive steps towards planning your eternity... if I can help please drop me a line and I'll share with you how mine's going so far...

Sometimes life can fill up our days with more that we can handle... both physically and emotionally. I am probably a little strange, but since I was a kid I always looked at the resting sun as an end to that day's challenges, and looked forward to regrouping my strength for a new tomorrow, and hopefully a day filled with new opportunities.

This is for my friends who need a little hope for a new tomorrow.

This picture is #80 in my 100 Strangers project.

On our previous Newtown photo trek, I managed to approach a stranger while she was at work in a shop--All Buttons Great and Small to be exact. It was the end of the day when we walked past and Pete commented on the wonderful pattern that the buttons made lining the wall and encouraged me to go in and get a portrait.

Having already disrupted someone at lunch and explained my project to a protective mother that day, I figured it couldn't be any more challenging to approach someone at work. Fortunately, the shop was quite quiet, and I was able to speak with Jo.

Keen to use a rainbow of buttons as a backdrop, I took a couple shots in the store. The light was horrible inside, with halogens mostly aimed straight down like mini spot lights. So I pushed my luck a bit farther and asked if she would step outside as well. Jo was very sweet and I got a few more shots before thanking her and handing over a card.

It wasn't until I got home that I realized the focus was off. So when we met up again this past Saturday, I knew I would have to bother Jo once again. We made our way over towards the end of the day again and I popped into the shop. She was busy helping a customer, so I patiently waited wondering to myself whether she would agree a second time. I explained what had happened and asked if she would give me another chance. She was in!

Surprisingly, I was very nervous. Perhaps it was the built up expectation that I would try and shoot her a second time, the added pressure of needing to make up for past mistakes, or both!

Thank you for being so accommodating, Jo! Hope you like how the photo finally turned out. Please let me know if you'd like a larger copy, as I'd be happy to send you one.

Last time I was shooting at f/1.2, so this time I opted to shoot at f/2.0 to help with my focus issue!

Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated!

My picture is appropriate but needs some explaining. At the Second Chance shelter there is so much dog shit that they need to haul it off, to the dog shit pile, in wheelbarrows. The wheelbarrow represents Washington politics and the Shit represents our politicians.

Photo not quite 6 months old... second chances for the past processing assignment of studio 26.

I originally pulled out quite a few photos of my zoo visit in Erie and started developing them. I wasn't too happy with the first tries, and occasionally went back to them, never quite satisfied.

Dave's past processing of his heroine at Tatooine (Disneyland version) finally showed me to develop things lighter, without losing the mystery (or wackiness - you decide). (Sheep)

This picture is #86 in my 100 Strangers project.

After ending my drought of strangers in Melbourne, I coordinated with Pete to spend another afternoon shooting in our favourite local haunt--Newtown. Perhaps it's just the difference in seasons, but even for a Saturday, the place seemed a bit slow. It wasn't until the afternoon that I got my first stranger of the day--Kelly.

We were slowly making the rounds when I spotted Kelly just inside the entrance to a clothing store. While debating on making the approach, she turned and ventured further inside. And so we continued our way. While heading back to the Hub, we were waiting at a stoplight when I noticed her from across the street. Without really any explanation, I dashed off across the street and sped down the sidewalk to catch up with her.

Kelly was happy to participate in the project when I provided her with an explanation about what we were up to. After grabbing a few shots, the three of us had a great chat, emphasizing for me how much of the project is about the interaction.

Originally from the UK, she tried living in NZ and Melbourne before finally settling on Sydney, where she now works in children's publishing. The beautiful weather--despite it being Winter down under--on Sat confirmed that she had made the correct decision.

Thanks for participating in my project, Kelly! If you like how the photo has turned out, please let me know and I'd be happy to send you a full sized copy.

This picture is #4 in Round Two of my 100 Strangers project.

Facebook | Website

I'm starting to notice a trend with my second round of 100 Strangers--they are much fewer and farther between! The speed at which I accumulate portraits has never really been a concern, though there is certainly a sense of satisfaction when you've found, approached and photographed a stranger. Hopefully I can continue to make progress without too much downtime in between.

After six months, Pete and I finally managed to meet up for some street portraiture. We opted to visit Surry Hills this past weekend and despite the fact that it was completely chocker, we were off to a truly slow start. The oppressive heat and mugginess of the day may have been a contributing factor, but we soldiered on.

It all paid off for me when we walked past a little French cafe called Fifi Foveaux's. A waitress, overladen with dishes, lost a knife on the sidewalk and as she glanced upwards from retrieving the errant utensil, her eyes begged to be photographed. She was clearly very busy, so we opted to continue wandering Crown Street.

About an hour or so later, we found ourselves back outside Fifi's. The lunch crowd had died down, so with some encouragement from Pete, I popped into the cafe to make the approach. Normally when I approach someone at work, I give a more complete explanation before jumping in with, "can I take your photo?" Being a bit rusty, I asked her right off the bat and she happily agreed.

However, this shot is not from outside the cafe, as my autofocus continues to give me some issues. Fortunately, I happened to run across Lea as I was heading off towards home. When I explained what had happened, she was happy to pose for another shot. The best part is that she was wearing this great felt hat that was missing from the first shot!

Lea has been in Sydney for 3 months on a working holiday visa from Germany. After Summer comes to an end, she plans to continue her travels and explore New Zealand before heading back to Germany.

Thank you for your generosity with your time, Lea. Hope I didn't get you in trouble at work! If you like how the photo has turned out, please flick me a note and I'd be happy to send you a copy. Or feel free to tag yourself on my Facebook page.

A few personal complaints about the shot. I underutilized the reflector, it should have been positioned to add fill to the right side of her face. And it feels a bit soft; really need to micro-adjust my 85mm!!

Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated!

Well, as you can see, the sun never did come out from behind the cloud cover, but it did light everything up pretty dramatically... :) Here I was waiting for the sun to expose itself and instead the sun stayed behind the clouds and exposed details that I wouldn't have seen otherwise... interesting how life is sometimes isn't it??? :)

I'm learning that sometimes the expected things that are exposed readily in my life isn't what I necessarily need to be concentrating on... it's kind of like the silver lining that comes along unexpectedly. I'm also learning that the more I try to do the right things in my life the more God exposes the silver linings in my life...

Grace is an awesome thing to be exposed to... :)

He is making me new.

I love spring because of all the imagery that comes to mind--a chance to start over, the renewal of life, the freshness and clarity that comes only from grace. Spring just reminds me of how faithful God is. He keeps His promises; there will always be a spring, no matter how hard the winter was.

I forget far too often that I'm not the one in control of my life.

We just celebrated 33 years of marriage :-)

I have learned that in times when the disease tries to pull her from me I must tighten my grip... and hold on for both of our lives!!!

Our celebration this year was to simply sit and hold hands... and it turned out to be the best gift we could give each other... live doesn't have to be complicated to be special.

I'm still learning so be patient with me...
