Just another from my favorite shots of 2018 file that I am finally sharing.
In early 2018 Pan Am railways attempted to serve a long dormant customer located in Somerville, MA adjacent the skeletal remains of what was once the massive Boston & Maine Railroad yard and shop complex in their namesake city. Now what remains is 99.9% the domain of passenger trains and B&M successor PAR bases only one lonely switch engine in the city. I was very fortunate to catch a few of these very rare moves on this obscure bit of trackage. Here we see MEC 345 backing gingerly out of the spur from Boston Paperboard heading back toward the old Yard 10 lead. They had just attempted to spot two loads which derailed on the curve leading to the warehouse. These derailed cars would sit for over a month and never actually get spotted. Eventually they would be rerailed, pulled out, and shipped away somewhere ending their experiment of using rail service again. So this image is the second to last train on the rails...I wasn't able to shoot the final move when the cars were pulled.

I worked harder for this image than most, I broke a lens after my morning shoot, and had to hike back to the jeep to get a replacement lens. It was 12 miles total over very rough desert, and I was totally exhausted when we made it back that night, but it was worth it.

CN L517 crosses the Arcola high bridge in a rare daylight appearance. After missing the run in October, I thought that would be it for daylight runs this year. Thankfully, I was proven wrong. I got word of this train early in the morning, and got to Arcola as soon as possible. I was the only one down there for a long while, but knew the train was getting closer when more railfans started showing up. After waiting a couple hours, the horn was blown and the train headed over the half mile long bridge. It was great to finally shoot a train going over this structure.
A point at which the wind dropped. It picked up again and I never saw this lovely reflection thereafter
... from the Severn Crossing. I have been sitting on this for a few weeks as could not decide which of the hundred or so near identical shots to post. I am a bit click happy; a combination of fear of losing a great shot, and the inner happiness that comes from the sound of the Nikon shutter. Oh, and yeah, I too would have liked to get the sun bang in the middle. ;-)
