In the begining of this year, my second upload was that of a different composition of this same scene. I had a really hard time deciding which one to choose, and spent the whole year second guessing my decision. So now, I thought it would be appropriate to show, as my second to last upload of the year, this second composition, which includes the second bird. And before I take one more second of your time, let me wish you, my friends, and your families, a very happy Christmas!!

Oh, and on a second note: I've just entered Instagram, which is allowing me a very different take on photography, so, if you are there too, I'd be thrilled if you add me there!

This is a photo of Second Life and certainly not a real photo, it is a virtual platform with avatars ...

the photo is inspired by Mexico and the monarch butterflies of Mexico is not a photo taken in real life.

Always a good time at the underground music club Warehouse21, whoever is the DJ. Some are good, some are better. As it says their motto 'everything except mainstream'. Take it by the word.

PS: I loooove the new poser feature in FS.

More wabi-sabi, more miscanthus, a genus of grass that grows over much of our back field, this is the fourth in this series taken this year. For me, these are all about the form of the lines about the frame, as well as the texture, color, and structure of the leaves of the grasses themselves. I took the liberty of showing this grass upside down because it just seemed to me to make a much more eye-catching form.

As a ten image focus stack, it should reward pretty close inspection, although in this case the minimalism means there isn't that much to examine.

The title "The Conductor" is by popular demand.

BTW, I've taken to putting a white rim around these images on black because, on my iPhone flickr app, it is otherwise difficult to discern the image's edges. I made it tiny because, while large mats look lovely on my desktop monitor, they make it hard for my tired old eyes to view an image on my iPhone's small screen.

A selection from the past week or so of second choices.

It was mild and sunny day here this afternoon and there were some small clouds of flies beside the river, presumably mating. I tried to take some back lit pictures of the flies and got this interesting and unexpected result.

On a closer look at the picture (view original size) each fly is captured moving with a series of individual beats of the wings visible illuminated at a series of points in time as they catch the sun during each stroke of the wing.

On the basis that the exposure time was 1/40th of a second and that I can see either 9 or 10 wing beats for each fly (mostly 10) during the exposure this means that the flies are beating their wings at 360 to 400 beats per second.

I should really have kept this picture for Friday Fly day group - anyway posted now.

A small creek feeds onto the beach at this spot in La Push, WA

with a whole lot of Eastern influence.

Yes, it's more tulips, but this image was made from a ten image focus stack. This one was cropped from a larger image which I might post later. I guess I just can't resist those tulips. I hope you feel the same.

1st shot with my new Nikon 14-24mm, very impressed with it.

We put some time into watching the weather and were rewarded with a stunning sunset.

Goshuin Project is very cool. You visit the Japanese shrines in Second Life collecting free stamps to put in your free stampbook. And some of the artwork is awesome! It runs from December 31, 2024 to January 15, 2025

Warbunton was the first shrine on the list. So fun! Cute little stone Hammie statues.

I'll be livestreaming visiting the shrines. Maybe I'll see you there

If the clouds cooperate you can sometimes get a second sunrise, or more accurately, a second sunburst in a different location. Here there was an open band of sky in the east, below the cloud cover. The first sunrise sunburst was taken as the sun started rising above the horizon. Once the sun was fully uncovered, I moved to (scrambled to find) a second location and caught a second sunburst as the sun started to slide behind the clouds.
