I am advised that they are for oxygen storage in case there is a problem with supply from BOC. Should be enough to finish off a BOS vessel to prevent losing a vessel.
Heading out to take some industrial images of the steelworks in Scunthorpe, it comes in handy if you take something for the birds. That way you can be sure to get them in your shot as they circle around screeching for food as seagulls do.
As of March 2020 this industrial plant is owned by the Chinese Jingye group.

St Hughs church at the junction of Ashby Rd and Old Brumby Street in the Brumby area of Scunthorpe. Brumby was one of the five villages that grew into what is present day Scunthorpe. This junction is one of the busiest in town as it'is the main north/south road through the spine of the town, taking traffic between the two main shopping districts of Ashby and Scunthorpe town centre.
I've been meaning to post this for a while, especially as this Bus Station is now demolished of course.
For some years previous, on Christmas Day only, all the Scunthorpe allocation were parked-up in this curious way, and I had always promised myself to record it one day, and the 25th December 1988 was the first time the chance presented itself. (Possibly, I just happened to need to nip out and get some batteries for one of the newly acquired kid's presents). It was taken from the roof of the (also now demolished) nearby multi-storey car-park, and affords quite a nice view of the interior of VR 1986 if nothing else.
The blocking of all the exits was only possible on this day of course, as it was the only day that there wasn't a National Express service passing through.
From the flat-front VR in the foreground it goes: VR 1986(NCS 435G); LN 2819(LTL 389P); LN 2830(RVL 143R); LN 2818(LTL 388P); Unidentified Series 3 VR.
The two vehicles at the top of the shot, behind the wash garage, are VR 1702(NNN 148P), and LN 2807(GTL 350N).
In the middle: VR 1921(MVL 131P); PSU3 1440(SJA 363J) - the latter of which had been converted to a towing vehicle by East Midland in April 1988, and was to remain in limbo at Scunthorpe until at least March 1989 - ultimately going to Newark as a breakdown vehicle in November 1989; LN 2831(SVL 838R), which was being stripped for spares; PSU3/Duple 1446(XFE 24S).
Finally, the only other bus visible is VR 1924(RFE 65R), which is parked 'nose-in' to the undercover stands.
I never did find out why they were parked in this way.
56058 arrives in the Yard at Scunthorpe with a loaded MGR on the final day of Grid and HAA operation (16th October 2003). The Loco will run round then take the Hoppers to the CHP (Coal Handling Point) where the wagons will be relieved of their Black Gold. 56006 can just be espied in the background and will go on to work 6N30 to Lackenby later that day.

66090 waits for instructions at Cwm Bargoed Open Cast Coal Mine. She is at the head of the 1545 to Scunthorpe Steel Works.
With the recent announcement of the steelworks being given to the receivers the future is not bright at Scunthorpe. If the steel works close the knock on effects can be far reaching even to the point of loss of trade at Cwm Bargoed.
As it turns out the customer cancelled this load and she was diverted to Margam.
The massive water bowser can be seen damping down the dust on the road to the pit.
Tricky times ahead.
2 Way Transport based near Scunthorpe have recently acquired 6 former Wilts & Dorset Optare Spectras, including former 3167 (Y167 FEL) photographed in Broughton on 19/11/2016. All now carry this striking livery, not too dissimilar to that of Lincolnshire RoadCar...

2 Way Leyland Tiger/Plaxton Paramont A159EPA is pictured here at Scunthorpe Railway Station. It was new as London & Country as their TPL59 and has operated with a number of independents en route to 2 Way. The Tiger was one of several vehicles to take part on 2 Way's "Two Stepper" running day. The event marked another milestone towards withdrawing further step-entranced double deckers from the company's fleet, in the wake of more Optare Spectras arriving.

EWS Brush Type five Class 60 60006 "Scunthorpe Ironmaster" diesel-electric locomotive approaches Tees Yard with 6M46 the 10:18 Redcar to Hardendale empty limestone train. This locomotive was built at Falcon Works in April 1990.

Harsco Kress Tong steel slab carriers at Scunthorpe steelworks.
These vehicles can carry up to 90 tonnes of slabs and stack them without the use of cranes. Through the use of onboard high-lift hydraulic tongs, any slabs can be handled directly from any surface without need for pallets or cranes. The tongs also allow the carrier operator to split and sort slab piles with ease which is of great benefit in field storage yards.
