Harsco operated Kress slab carrier at Scunthorpe steelworks. These vehicles can carry up to 90 tonnes of steel slabs and stack them without the use of cranes. Through the use of onboard high-lift hydraulic tongs, any slabs can be handled directly from any surface without need for pallets or cranes. The tongs also allow the carrier operator to split and sort slab piles with ease.
21st December 2013. D2128 / 03128 / 03 901 under restoration at the AFRPS shed in Scunthorpe steelworks. This loco is now owned by Andrew Briddon and has been rebuilt with a Cummins engine and hydraulic rather than mechanical transmission.

The locomotives which were built during the 1960's have largely been replaced by the MaK locomotives brought in from Redcar steelworks. During our visit one Janus locomotive was still in active service.

Bombus terrestris, the Buff-tailed Bumblebee or Large Earth Bumblebee, is one of the most numerous bumblebee species and is one of the main species used in greenhouse pollination. The queen is monandrous which means she mates with only one male. B. terrestris workers learn flower colours and forage efficiently.

More black gold is delivered to the hungry steelworks at Scunthorpe, hauled here by 56054 'British Steel Llanwern'. This service, is 7C75 1044 ex Immingham. Taken 14 years ago today, 13th February 2001.

On a grey cold morning 47 211 is at the head of a Scunthorpe to Wolverhampton Speedlink service, in the background the sad remains of Brownhills goods depot can be seen.
47211 was built at Crewe as D1861 and put into traffic 28/08/1965. As 47 211 it carried the evocative(!) name Johnson Stevens Agencies from 14/09/1995 until 30/06/1996 it became a Fragonset Railways locomotive until it was withdrawn 31/05 2003, it was cut at Eastleigh 31/07/2003.

Oxygen tanks at the Scunthorpe steelworks. These are for oxygen storage in case there is a problem with supply from BOC. There should be enough to finish off a Basic Oxygen Steelmaking vessel to prevent it being lost.

The amazing bluebell woods just around the corner from where I live in Scunthorpe. After a downpour of rain, the colours of the woodland really jump out at you.
My images are processed to look good on my laptop, and they do look good on there - and on my phone and tablet - I am aware though that some other screens will show my images as either too dark or indeed too light. This is due to individual screen settings and not my inability to produce a clear image ....
