The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of 972 texts from the Hebrew Bible and extra-biblical documents found between 1947 and 1956 on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, from which they derive their name. They were specifically located at Khirbet Qumran in what was then the British Mandate for Palestine, now the West Bank.

Considered worthless by thieves so they were often left behind. Today, they are priceless.

This image is derived from an earlier work called Pattern Cloud. I like that Digital work can evolve and iterate in a way analog art can not. You never know when a piece will trans migrate to the next step. Its about 90" long and I've yet to print it out full size.

Today the Jodo Mission of Hawaii saw the return of its hand-painted Japanese hanging scroll. At least 60 years old and the second largest such artifact in Hawaii, it was fully restored by skilled Japanese artisans under the direction of Japan Memorial Corporation's Tatsuji Maeda, who presented the restoration work to the Jodo Mission board this morning. This prized artwork will be carefully stored and only displayed in the temple maybe twice a year. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about these scrolls, it was certainly an education for us (and a substantial investment).

Let the ground shake and the mountains tremble at the words of His Majesty Logan Ebonwolf, inspired by the wisest under the Eternal Blue Sky, Rowan Berran McDowell, Queen. All those who dwell in felt tents and foreign strangers pay heed that we wish to recognize Chagan Khulan for her loyalty and service. She brings much honor to her Khan and our Crown with her profound knowledge of Mongol culture, customs, and art which she freely spreads to people throughout many Lands.

To this end, with much rejoicing, We do induct her into the Order of the Pelican.

The question was posed: What is your favorite handmade gift you have received? There are a couple. The first is already packed -- it's a hand-drawn birthday card presented to me during a trip through the UK. And this is another. A handwritten scroll given to me after a successful battle against cancer. It reads:

If God would choose a plant to represent him, I think he would choose of all plants the cactus. The cactus has all the blessings he tried, but mostly failed, to give to man. Let me tell you how. It has humility, but it is not submissive. It grows where no other plant will grow. It does not complain when the sun bakes it back or the wing tears it from the cliff or drowns it in the dry sand of the desert or when it is thirsty. When the rain comes it stores water for the hard times to come. In good times and in bad it will still flower. It protects itself against danger, but it harms no other plant. It adapts perfectly to almost any environment. It has patience and enjoys solitude. In Mexico there is a cactus that flowers only once every hundred years and at night. This is saintliness of an extraordinary kind, would you not agree? The cactus has properties that heal the wounds of men and from it come potions that can make man touch the face of God or stare into the mouth of hell. It is the plant of patience and solitude, love and madness, ugliness and beauty, toughness and gentleness. Of all plants, surely God made the cactus in his own image?

For locations that are too long to display in 7 characters, the first 7 characters will be displayed, and then scrolled to reveal the entire location name over the course of 8 seconds, then swapping to the location’s time zone.

The coloring of the letters and the size of the alphanumeric displays in this image are for a draft version; the full version is shown in an earlier image, with larger white alhpanumeric character displays.
