Squirrels (including some quite ready for winter) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on a beautiful autumn day - Thursday November 19, 2015. My doctor told me to get out for a few walks during the day to get my sciatica healed….what's a guy to do!
This was the morning of my lower back MRI. Results:
Mild to severe stenosis means more pain for many months with sciatica and piriformis syndrome.
Meds, RMT, chiropractors and whirlpools will rule.
Apparently for an officially aged old codger, my spine is in relatively good condition despite my having been smashed for years on the tatami mats of my old Judo Dojos.
In Barrie the wait for a Spinal Block injection is 9 mo, in Newmarket 12 months. I'll have to check the wait time in the Toronto hospitals.
This is about six years ago when I was feeling pretty well. I plan to get younger in the years to come. Send my back to the future and I will dive again and ski. Dedicated to my friendly supporters .Pv=tPjNU35xW2I

I have been experiencing sciatica symptoms for some weeks. I went to my doctor yesterday, who started me on medication and ordered an MRI scan that was performed this morning. Total cost (US members may want to look away) - $32.
At Camarillo Functional Health clinic, Dr. Michael Veselak addresses how the brain functions and integrates this with the metabolic function of each patient. Generally, Sciatica pain is caused by a herniated disc in the 4th or 5th Lumbar region, which impinges the Sciatic Nerve. Another less common cause of Sciatic Pain are synovial cysts. As I have been on Flickr for a few years now, most of you know, I work for Coca-Cola. I’ve been working a long time, and I’ve never been more inspired. I’m especially excited about our “Arctic Home” project.
Here’s a link!
www.arctichome.com/web/index.html
(Overview)
Together with WWF and people like you, Coca-Cola is helping to establish a safe refuge for the polar bear—a goal that will require working with local communities, supporting research and carrying out additional conservation work. As part of this initiative, Coca-Cola has created Arctic Home, our biggest effort to date to protect the polar bear and its habitat. Coca-Cola has pledged $2 million to help fund the creation of a safe refuge and—with your help—we can do even more. In that spirit, Coca-Cola has also agreed to match up to $1 million of consumer donations made through Arctic Home by March 15, 2012.
This holiday season, Coca-Cola is also turning our iconic red cans white for the first time in history and including a product code on participating Coca-Cola products that allows you to make a matched donation through Arctic Home. Simply text the product code to 357357 and make a matched $1 donation. You can also make a donation with or without a product code on this site. And to thank you for joining us in supporting the polar bear, you will receive a virtual parcel of Arctic Home in your name that you can use as a base for exploring and tracking real polar bears.
The Coca-Cola Polar Bear and I are old friends, and actually, we’ve both matured. I’m sure the character and animation are ever evolving. He was taller, “bigger” and more animated. ;o) This photo is kind of dark, but I wanted to post it anyway to tell you about the Arctic Home project.
I had a great time in Atlanta, and a productive trip workwise as well. Only downside, I developed sciatica pain Thursday, which became severe on Friday. If you've ever had it, you know what I mean. I can't sit, stand or walk without whincing with white hot pain! It's bizarre. I'm taking care and will see my chiropractor on Monday. In the meantime, I've been laying down and treating with an ice pack at regular intervals.
Hugs and thanks for viewing! =o)

My son, a quick shot taken at the Rose and Crown pub in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. One of my friends likes to call Drew "Scrappy Doo" for all the numerous falls, cuts, bruises and scars. This image is posted in the large size for those interested in seeing what this Canon 5D Mark II can do handheld at ISO 3200. I used the 70-200mm L f/4 lens and of course did not manage to pull out the Speedlight for the shot. I am lucky that Drew usually lets me practice on him for my model. This image has special meaning, for last night he and I spent 5 1/2 hours in ER, yet again. His sciatica and muscle cramps are bothering him quite a bit lately. This portrait was taken about 9 hours after we left ER.

Today, 29 April 2024, I managed to get out again, just in time for the snow that is expected for tonight, rain too. Also rain and snow for tomorrow and the next day, 1 May. Overcast, chilly wind, and a few raindrops today, during my drive. Just a fairly short trip SW of the city, but I was so happy to see several Mountain Bluebirds and a few American Robins, plus a couple of Swainson's (?) Hawks. Taken in poor light, so I need to lighten a photo to be sure of the hawk species. Of course, Red-winged Blackbirds everywhere made sure they were heard. A Canada Goose lying on her nest was a welcome sight.
I will post photos from today when I have edited them. This evening, I'm adding five more photos from my last drive, three days ago. It has been many months since I was able to get out this much, and it feels so good, even if not physically.
On 26 April 2024, I managed a short drive SE of Calgary. Thought I had better make the most of clear roads before the bad weather arrives. All familiar, much-travelled roads this time, around the Frank Lake area and while heading back home.
I bumped into a huge group of people who were on a special outing to Frank Lake, led by Greg Wagner, who takes care of the lake areas and does a tremendous job of recording every bird seen, all year round and for many years. Not just once a day, either! Yesterday, he was showing the participants the various viewing points around the lake and I happened to see the cars coming towards me along one of the roads. I turned around and caught up with them. They had just one more location to visit, but one had to drive on a rough, non-road to get there. I would have been almost the last person to get there if I had gone, with a long walk to get to the lake edge. I knew I couldn't do that, with painful sciatica or bursitis in my right side, so I continued on my own journey. Good to see you, Greg, even if for just a few moments.
A bit of information about Greg:
ebird.org/region/CA/post/greg-wagner-march-ebirder-of-the...
So many birds in the area are far, far away - and I still don't possess a pair of binoculars after about 18 years of birding! (By the way, the birding blind area at Frank Lake is still extremely flooded.) However, I was happy to spend a bit of time watching and taking a few photos of the closer birds on my way home. Mainly Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds, plus a few Coots and European Starlings. At one point, there was an absolute frenzy of a group of Starlings and both species of Blackbirds on the ground, all mixed together. I had to take a bit of video, through the windscreen so poor quality.

"Low back pain is something that almost all people experience at some point in their lives. It is something common across sexes, age groups, countries, socioeconomic groups, education levels and occupation," said the lead author of the first study, Damian Hoy, a senior research fellow at the University of Queensland's School of Population Health, in Australia.
Research shows that 40% of people become less active after back pain strikes â a strategy that's likely to delay healing or even make their condition worse. Try SpinaliS chairs and don't look back!

Urtica dioica 'Stinging Nettle'
The young leaves can be cooked as a potherb and added to soups, they can also be dried for winter use. Nettles are a very valuable addition to the diet, they are a very nutritious food that is easily digested and is high in minerals (especially iron) and vitamins (especially A and C). Only use young leaves and wear stout gloves when harvesting them to prevent being stung. Cooking the leaves, or thoroughly drying them, neutralizes the sting, rendering the leaf safe to eat. The young shoots, harvested in the spring when 15-20cm long complete with the underground stem are very nice. Old leaves can be laxative. The plants are harvested commercially for extraction of the chlorophyll, which is used as a green colouring agent (E140) in foods and medicines. A tea is made from the dried leaves, it is warming on a winter’s day. A bland flavour, it can be added as a tonic to China tea. The juice of the leaves, or a decoction of the herb, can be used as a rennet substitute in curdling plant milks. Nettle beer is brewed from the young shoots.
Nettles have a long history of use in the home as an herbal remedy and nutritious addition to the diet. A tea made from the leaves has traditionally been used as a cleansing tonic and blood purifier so the plant is often used in the treatment of hay fever, arthritis, anaemia.
