We were glad to see one of these little birds still around but hard to capture as it did not stay long.
We were glad to get out again to the feeding station after a long time not going out anywhere. As well as the very wet winter Tony had unfortunately been unwell since Christmas with Sciatica, he was in pain and unable to go to bed for two months.
He is now almost back to normal - just right for the Ospreys' return to Rutland Water in about one or two weeks time, he was getting worried that he would not be able to go and see them again.

Sciatica is a beeyotch. While I'm recovering, sitting is the worst thing for it. Standing all day at work, however, kills my feet. I imagined something like this, a quick internet search showed I wasn't the only one to think of it, so I made one. The frame is from Community Cycling Center in Portland. It's a non-profit that takes donations. Stuff they don't want to sell gets thrown into a bin. Every Sunday the public is allowed to paw through it, whatever you want costs 50 cents a pound. I found a large frame, stripped it down, and paid $4 for it, including the seatpost. The saddle is a nice Brooks B67. It wasn't quite tall enough for me to straighten my legs, so I used some scrap lumber to build it up.

Poor Pudding! I had great intentions for photos today downtown, but I ended up spending nearly 2 hours going to a chiropractor for my sciatica and hip pain that has really flared up - another reason to set up this table!
A photo I motion blurred of me running the 102nd Boston. I had run the 100th before just to run it, but I wanted a good time in 1998. I had a 2:42 qualifier coming in, which put me in the first corral. However, I started having sciatica about 2 months before the race. I had bad back pain most of the race, but I still ran an "easy" 2:54. My highlight was doing 20 push-ups at 20K in front of the screaming girls at Wellesley College. Now I know how boy bands feel (and my back felt better, too)!

This is an ongoing postal photography project. I mail matchbox pinhole cameras loaded with photographic paper to participants, inviting them to photograph 'what cannot be seen'. The cameras are then returned to me to be processed, accompanied by an explanation of what the participant has photographed.
"I've had a relationship with DF118s (codeine painkillers) since I was hospitalised a few times in the 1990s for treatment for a long term illness. Hospital can be very boring, especially if you're spending 20 hours a day alone in a room with four TV channels and a bowl to be sick in. I guess it's hardly surprising that people turn to the readily available drugs for some relief from the boredom.
I get these painkillers from my GP. He thinks I have sciatica. The previous GP thought I had post-operative complications that required strong pain relief. I like to mix up the reasons when I change GPs, it keeps it interesting. They don't check, my medical file is the size of a phone book. Who has the time to read that?"

I can hardly think of anything except getting that shot on Thursday. I'm afraid of the pain, even though that pain will be much shorter than this pain. I can't explain it.
The first time I got cortisone was in both wrists at once. They ached so badly afterward, but I never got tendonitis in my wrists again. The next time, I got it in my shoulder for a torn rotator cuff (from the same accident that gave me this sciatica!). The pain was intense. I fainted in the waiting room on my way to the car. And then, in Toys R Us, while Christmas shopping, one eye crossed and got stuck. I freaked. And it happened again. I think it was an odd sort of migraine. But since then, I've been terrified of cortisone.
So I'm terrified.
I also don't understand why I'm not supposed to have anything but clear liquids for six hours.
And I don't know why it's called a "root nerve block." Root and nerve in the same phrase scare me.
I'm scared.
The ability to finish this challenge was in jeopardy early in the year when I began suffering from severe sciatica pain. I had family trips planned to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Hocking Hills State Park which I wasn't able to do much hiking but still marveled at the wonders of the NCT. Even though I wasn't able to join in all the fun the pleasure of watching my family experience the trail was in itself a joy. Fortunately I've been able to finish this challenge.

This is my farewell shot of Whitby, which is a pity as there is much to see in this fine town.
