A shot from my visit to Mom's a week or so ago.

What a nice weekend. It finally cooled down a bit yesterday - cool enough to get a decent night of sleep.

We got a few errands taken care of and had a little fun, too. I added the new Elvis Costello, Stevie Winwood CDs to my collection.

I even washed my truck.

The sciatica is pretty much healed. I have just a little numbness in my big toe and the next one over. Once in a while the ball of my foot feels a bit tingly. So, washing the truck was kind of a big deal for me.

Monday. Monday. Monday. Please be gentle...

When I made this photo (in 2014), Marg was in her 90's, lively both mentally and physically. (Shortly before I shot these photos she showed me her toe-touching style - she could actually reach the floor, despite suffering from a current bout of sciatica.) I was aiming for less posed shots than this - of her engaging with the others at happy hour - but when she looked directly at the camera with her signature smile, I couldn't resist pressing the shutter. Wish I hadn't cut off the top of her head, but the small size of the room meant I had to be quite close, so with my 50-mm lens and crop sensor, if I'd managed to get all of her head I would have lost her hand.

Sadly, Marg passed away in the summer of 2017. A lovely lady, definitely missed.

The wide angle makes this look less full than it was or felt! One of the most wedged trains I've been on. Seating capacity per compartment area is 10 in General Unreserved. I counted 28 (although a few were kids but that was more than offset by the several massive bags and sacks). Only four hours of this to Bathinda Junction! I reckon there were well over 3000 people on the paltry 11 coaches. Train 54702, the 08:30 Lalgarh Jn - Abohar Jn Passenger, on Sunday 11th March 2018. Apparently it's always very busy.

To add to the trial the train stood for 30-minutes in the baking heat while they mucked about shunting a parcels van off the front: my litre of water soon went! Apart from sciatica, it wasn't too bad once on the move and chatting to a nice chap (Rajiv) about this and that, but mainly how the Indian's romantic, idealistic view of the UK is nothing like the selfish, mean, greedy, currupt and morally bankrupt reality that 40 years of Tory and Tory-lite rule has made it, helped pass the time. When he got off I was given his wife's seat (much to the annoyance of some others, but for once I didn't much care).

The power was yet another fantastically ballsy recently rebuilt Abu Road WDM3A, 16825 - listening to that truncheon took my mind off the minor discomforts.

#Yoga poses to soothe " SCIATIC NERVE PAIN "

Sciatica is a nerve that stems out from the spine, running deep into the buttock, and traveling down to the back of each leg. This nerve also happens to be the longest nerve in the body. When this nerve is pressed, or blood circulation in the area is reduced, a shooting pain passes through the area, making sitting and standing quite a task. The pain increases when the person is seated.Sciatica can also arise from spinal disorders like spondylitis, spinal stenosis, a damaged or ruptured disc, a lower back injury, or a degenerative disc disease. All of these put pressure on the Sciatic nerve, thereby, inducing pain.

There are many treatments available out there to cure sciatica. But nothing works like yoga. A study shows that when sciatic patients used a combination of yoga and pain-reducing medication, the intensity and frequency of the problem diminished drastically.

TY for stopping by

This is the plant which is such a nuisance if you have long-haired and fairly tall dogs!

The flowerheads have hooked bracts, and the dried heads in particular stick to clothing and animal hair to distribute their seeds.

Little boys have used them in playfights for centuries and still do!

Both Greater and Lesser Burdock were both nothing if not medicinally versatile.

The juice was said to counteract the bites of snakes and rabid dogs, to soothe burns and the flow of urine: the leaves were aplied to sores and ulcers, and the seeds were prescribed for sciatica.

The young stalks, peeled and chopped were used as a salad ingredient, or boiled and eaten with butter.

Luckily for me my pack of dogs are either too short or have too smooth coats for these burs to be much of a nuisance!

Just for the record.

Today, 29 April 2024, I managed to get out again, just in time for the snow that is expected for tonight, rain too. Also rain and snow for tomorrow and the next day, 1 May. Overcast, chilly wind, and a few raindrops today, during my drive. Just a fairly short trip SW of the city, but I was so happy to see several Mountain Bluebirds and a few American Robins, plus a couple of Swainson's (?) Hawks. Taken in poor light, so I need to lighten a photo to be sure of the hawk species. Of course, Red-winged Blackbirds everywhere made sure they were heard. A Canada Goose lying on her nest was a welcome sight.

I will post photos from today when I have edited them. This evening, I'm adding five more photos from my last drive, three days ago. It has been many months since I was able to get out this much, and it feels so good, even if not physically.

On 26 April 2024, I managed a short drive SE of Calgary. Thought I had better make the most of clear roads before the bad weather arrives. All familiar, much-travelled roads this time, around the Frank Lake area and while heading back home.

I bumped into a huge group of people who were on a special outing to Frank Lake, led by Greg Wagner, who takes care of the lake areas and does a tremendous job of recording every bird seen, all year round and for many years. Not just once a day, either! Yesterday, he was showing the participants the various viewing points around the lake and I happened to see the cars coming towards me along one of the roads. I turned around and caught up with them. They had just one more location to visit, but one had to drive on a rough, non-road to get there. I would have been almost the last person to get there if I had gone, with a long walk to get to the lake edge. I knew I couldn't do that, with painful sciatica or bursitis in my right side, so I continued on my own journey. Good to see you, Greg, even if for just a few moments.

A bit of information about Greg:

ebird.org/region/CA/post/greg-wagner-march-ebirder-of-the...

So many birds in the area are far, far away - and I still don't possess a pair of binoculars after about 18 years of birding! (By the way, the birding blind area at Frank Lake is still extremely flooded.) However, I was happy to spend a bit of time watching and taking a few photos of the closer birds on my way home. Mainly Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds, plus a few Coots and European Starlings. At one point, there was an absolute frenzy of a group of Starlings and both species of Blackbirds on the ground, all mixed together. I had to take a bit of video, through the windscreen so poor quality.

Dec.2009, "On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again...". Here we are stuck at the Frankfort airport during our transfer to our destination..this time we're off to INDIA FOR 21 days for me to undergo SPINAL DISC REPLACEMENT SURGERY on 4 discs! Dec.30, 2009-Jan.21, 2010.

My prior tests and MRI's revealed that my Degenerative Disc Disease had excelerated...I had spinal cord compression in my neck due to herniated discs at C5,C6 and C6,C7 and in my Lumbar spine I had a herniated disc with an annular tear at L5,S1 as well as a bulged disc at L4, L5 (where the Sciatic Nerve is), also had "excreted disc material" in the areas surrounding the bad discs in both Lumnar and Cervical spine as well as bone spurs.(we already knew about the L5, S1 bad disc but it was not a huge problem until my bad Si surgery in 2008...). In the States, I had also gone through additional testing to confirm underwent Nerve Testing and a Discogram as well and it all confirmed that I needed disc surgery.

I had more MRI's done in India to confirm my need for disc replacements. What followed was surgical replacement for 3 of the 4 discs that were originally scheduled to be replaced. Unfortunatly, the surgeon could not removed the disc responsible for my severe Sciatica at L4,L5 due to a vital blood vessel running over top of it (surgeon said I could have likely lost my leg if he tampered with it).

Dr Habberton-Lulham: By the 1920s Dr Lulham was well known in Sussex as a photographer, poet and lecturer who loved the Sussex Downs. He started his career as a young surgeon, and sometime cricketer, graduating from Guy’s Hospital in 1896. He worked at Sussex County Hospital in Brighton as a ‘dresser’ for the Senior Surgeon, Dr Blaker. From the 1900s Dr Lulham contributed photographs to books on rural themes such as shepherds and for his old boss Dr Blaker’s boyhood memories. Dr Lulham also wrote books of poetry on the Sussex countryside that included songs from the Downs and Dunes in 1908. He later became a vice president of the Sussex Poetry Society. According to Kelly’s and Medical Directories he was still practising as a doctor in Ditchling and then Brighton at this time. From the 1920s he may have stopped being a doctor due to sciatica and high blood pressure and concentrated on his photography and public lectures. The British Medical Journal reports in the 1920s and 1930s his successful performances of lantern lectures at the AGMs of Sussex medical professionals. His best-known lectures were ‘Human Nature through a Doctor’s Eyes’ and ‘Rustic Life and Humour’. (Source: memorywall.org.uk)

...going nuts.

Such a day of highs and lows! First off, thanks so much for my friend Kevin, who got me to finally go to the Arizona State Fair. I've been in Phoenix 5 1/2 years and never had an interest in going. But the interest was sparked suddenly. I guess it took a person who called me up and said, "hey, let's go shoot photos at the fair", LOL

Second UP of the day was an incredible concert by family member William Joseph, who gave one of the most fantastic concerts I've ever been to! He came "home" to the Valley and filled the Mesa Arts Center auditorium.

But then, son and I spent all night in ER. He has sciatica and other issues. All for now, back later with the rest of the story.

6 JUNE 14

Another twist out attempt on this TWA. Today was a day to just get out of the house and run a few errands. Typically I think we all just throw on some jeans or something and go, but I decided, lets not look like we crawled out of a cave today, so I really got dressed up. I'm wearing the lace cut dress I wore almost a year ago to my now Sister-in-laws bridal shower with a shrug and my arrowhead necklace and some hoops. I wanted to wear my heels, but by god, my hamstrings are still killing me. My brother suggested in might actually be sciatica, and given where the pain is coming from, I tend to agree. Today was the first day in forever that I felt any sort energy enough to walk. The pain has made it most difficult to just walk straight. I have had to compensate by sort of rocking on leg forward or sliding my leg in a sort of shuffling fashion. I'm icing it and Ben Gaying it, but I'm still only at 60% today.

Anyway, today was hotter than the devils balls. It seemed like just about every one of my friends status updates had something to do with how hot it was. My thermometer in the shade read 100 degrees all the way up until 7:30 at night. As all of us H-towners know, its not the heat that will kill you, it's the humidity, and that it was. Typically when I pull up to some place, I can turn the air off, and rifle through my stuff looking for whatever I need and then go, but now-a-days, I have to leave the a/c on up until the absolute last minute before I open the car door. I have wanted to go to G-town for ages, and now as I feared it is just much too hot to go out there and try to hang out on the water for any reason. Unlike other people who live near the water, ours is absolutely not blue so getting in is like an at your own risk thing, not that I would be out there swimming anyway. The last time I officially went in the drink, I was in the 6th grade at a pool party. I haven't been swimming since that day mainly because for nearly 17 years I had permed hair, and you don't get that wet, but now with the natural, I still have no desire to really go swimming.

Thanks to Netflix and my third free trial, woot, I was able to rent the last hundred seasons of all the shows I haven't been able to see. I'm trying to catch up on Game of Thrones, True Blood, Shameless, and Orange is the New Black. Binge watching is something else. In like a day, you can be caught up with an entire show. TV has changed so much from when I was a kid. I remember for one, the summer was a dead period on tv. There was no new programming, so you had re-runs for about 4 months solid, and now summer tv is where new shows that might not typically survive in the Fall, are debuted. Of course now, with DVD and Blu Ray, even if the show you love is cancelled or maybe you just haven't been able to see it all season, you can pick it up on dvd and watch it forever if you'd like. You also really never have to worry about missing a show for the aforementioned reason and because with DVR, you can simply record your show but unlike VCR's, if the power goes out or your tape gets messed up, you've lost your show, but with DVR, its on there basically forever until you choose to delete it or watch it. And then even after all of that, you still have things like On Demand where you can watch your shows, or HULU, or any internet device, or you can buy an episode and watch whenever and wherever you want. I mean when we think about how many leaps and bounds TV technology has made, it is absolutely astounding. I remember getting into fights with my brother over who controlled Saturday morning cartoons. If I had kids, this wouldn't even be an issue.

When I was over at Keynsham I saw growing alongside but behind a fence in the station two plants of Common Ragwort Senecio jacobaeas AKA Ragweed, St James Wort, Stagger Wort, Stammer Wort, Segrum and in Scotland Stinking Billy.

It is poisonous to horses and consequently there are often campaigns raised against it to root out any found growing where horses and the like could possibly eat it.

I had not got any other lens but the Tamron 18-270 zoom but managed to get a few pictures of it and the leaf shape for my connection.

Of this plant Culpeper the ancient herbalist has to say

Government and virtues: —

Ragwort is under the command of Dame Venus, and cleanses, digests, and discusses. The decoction of the herb is good to wash the mouth or throat that hath ulcers or sores therein: and for swellings, hardness, or imposthumes, for it thoroughly cleanses and heals them; as also the quinsy, and the king's evil. It helps to stays catarrhs, thin rheums, and defluxions from the head into the eyes, nose, or lungs. The juice is found by experience to be singularly good to heal green wounds, and to cleanse and heal all old and filthy ulcers in the privities, and in other parts of the body, as also inward wounds and ulcers; stays the malignity of fretting and running cankers, and hollow fistulas, not suffering them to spread farther. It is also much commended to help aches and pains either in the fleshy part, or in the nerves and sinews, as also the sciatica, or pain of the hips or knuckle-bone, to bathe the places with the decoction of the herb, or to anoint them with an ointment made of the herb bruised and boiled in old hog's suet, with some Mastick and Olibanum in powder added unto it after it is strained forth. In Sussex we call it Ragweed.

How Poor Posture Affects Work Performance

801-225-1311

Orem Chiropractor - R. Ned McArthur, D.C.

Hi this is Dr Ned McArthur

This is number 2 in a series of videos inspired by a 2012 Prevention Magazine article entitled

seven weird ways your posture affects your health and happiness.

Today's topic: Bad posture causes problems in your job.

We've talked about how poor posture leads to various kinds of pain like neck and back pain, headaches, shoulder pain but poor posture can lead to other things that you wouldn't associate with posture like depression, dizziness, fibromyalgia, numbness and sciatica.

Unfortunately, bad posture doesn't just result in pain. It will also affect how people see you. Someone who is slouched and always bent over is unconsciously seen as unimportant.

What happens to unimportant things in the work place? If you're seen as unimportant your likely not to keep your job for very long or at best if will be much more difficult to advance.
