Greater Burdock
This is the plant which is such a nuisance if you have long-haired and fairly tall dogs!
The flowerheads have hooked bracts, and the dried heads in particular stick to clothing and animal hair to distribute their seeds.
Little boys have used them in playfights for centuries and still do!
Both Greater and Lesser Burdock were both nothing if not medicinally versatile.
The juice was said to counteract the bites of snakes and rabid dogs, to soothe burns and the flow of urine: the leaves were aplied to sores and ulcers, and the seeds were prescribed for sciatica.
The young stalks, peeled and chopped were used as a salad ingredient, or boiled and eaten with butter.
Luckily for me my pack of dogs are either too short or have too smooth coats for these burs to be much of a nuisance!
