GUMDIGGER COMMITS SUICIDE

SHOOTS HIMSELF IN THE DOMAIN.

PREFERS DEATH TO SUFFERING.

It was reported to the police at about half-past five yesterday afternoon by a lad named Edwin Williams, son of an employee of the City Council residing in the Domain, that a man had shot himself with a revolver.

Constable Skinner, who at once proceeded to the spot, found an elderly man lying in an unconscious condition under some trees, and bleeding from the mouth. Beside him was a six-chambered revolver, one barrel of which had been recently discharged. The constable improvised a stretcher out of a sack, and with the assistance of some other men, took the wounded man to the hospital, where, on examination, it was found that the bullet had gone through the mouth and embedded itself in the brain, rendering recovery impossible.

In one of the man's pockets, together with a box of cartridges, was found the following written statement: "James Trahair- a Cornishman, who is tired of my life, and who has been a great sufferer from indigestion and kidney disease, and who has spent almost a small fortune for little or no good, and I can neither eat nor sleep. I come to my death by my own hand. I have been in New Zealand 31 years, and am 64 years of age."

At about six o'clock the police were notified by the hospital officials that the man had died.

It appears from information supplied by the police that Trahair, who had been in the colony for 31 years, and was 64 years of age, was for five years gum digging at Dairy Flat.

On the 20th of last July, however, he was admitted, on the certificate of Dr. Hooper, to the Costley Home, suffering from sciatica and general debility, and as being unable to work. He left that institution on the 6th of October last, at his own request. When admitted he paid £9 10/ to the Home authorities, and was refunded £4 18 '4 on leaving. He was readmitted on the 17th of January last, and left again, without permission, on the 5th of the present month. He has since then been knocking about the city doing nothing.

An inquest was held by the coroner (Mr T. Gresham) at the Auckland Hospital this morning.

Mr John Strathern, relieving officer of the Charitable Aid Board, stated that he had known deceased for the past ten years. He was a man of steady and temperate habits. Witness had met deceased a sbort time ago after he had left the Costley Home, and had advised him to return there. Trahair had seemed to be in a very depressed state of mind, and had remarked to witness that his life was not worth living. Deceased had no relatives in the coloney.

Constable Arthur Skinners evidence showed that he found deceased lying on the ground under some trees, with a bullet wound m the mouth. Deceased was unconscious, but groaning. He never recovered consciousness. Witness, with the help of some other men, conveyed deceased with all despatch to the hospital. The man was handed over to the hospital authorities at 4 o'clock.

Dr. Walsh, resident surgeon at the Auckland Hospital, said that when deceased was admitted an operation was immediately performed by Dr. Craig and the bullet extracted, but from the first the case was practically hopeless. Deceased died at about six o'clock. Cause of death was hemorrhage and laceration of the brain. In his opinion the wound must have been self-infticted.

A verdict was returned that deceased shot himself with a revolver whilst in a mentally deranged state.

Plot 27: James Trahair (64) 17/5/1905 – Gunshot (Ang.)

Rows 12 - 16 in Anglican Division F are what can also be known as ‘Potters Fields’, they were used to bury some of the people whose families were unable to afford funeral costs, institutionalised unidentified at the time of burial or had no-one to bury them. These plots were common graves with some having up to three individuals interred in each, as they were not purchased, permanent grave markers were not permitted to be erected.

These rows are now protected by native bush and it is now no longer known where either rows or individual plots are located in this area.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Vitamin B complex should not be used in hypersensitivity to any of the vitamins, containing in the preparation, as well as in patients with 2-nd or 3-rd degree arterial hypertension.

SPECIAL WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS

Because of in vitro incompatibility the preparation should not be used simultaneously (in the same syringe) with following preparations: Benzilpenicillin and oxacyllin (the antibiotic precipitates and is inactivated), macrolides (insoluble sedimentation is formed); Chloramphenicol (precipitation); Vitamin B12 (cobalt ions destruct vitamin B2); Vitamin C (inactivates vitamin B6). www.chiroclearwater.com

We have five days left in India, so time is getting short, and already thoughts turn to tasks for next week, yes, I'm talking about you, Scully.

There has been an issue back home with insulin, and the upshot is that she will run out on Friday. This we found out just before we went to bed last night, so had to find a way to message the vets.

Let's just say that because you can only register two devices for internet, and I have logged Jools out of her e mail account, on top of which, many UK sites are blocking us when we try to get on them because of our Indian IP address.

After half an hour, we have a solution, message Jen, e mail the vets and hope that it will be sorted on Thursday.

It was.

So, another day with just an afternoon safari, so we lay in bed, not wanting to do anything else, as Andy and his wife both have Delhi belly again, and other than the park there is little to see.

We lay in bed to eight, then lollygag our way down to breakfast where only cereal, toast and coffee tempt us.

I back out of the short birding walk due to sciatica, so go back to listen to podcast sitting on the veranda, where I was eaten alive by mozzies.

We had lunch, then got ready to get back in the jeeps for our second safari here.

Corbett NP is hue, and has more tiers than the other three reserves, but what there is is spread out, which means lots of driving around and listening to alarm calls by birds and deers.

At least we entered by the nearest gate, and somehow we were the first Jeep in the park after lining up, we head off into unexplored lands for us.

More dry river beds, but more hills, covered in forest, and sliced through by streams that cut into the rock.

The tracks weaved their way through this.

Truth is, its warmer here than usual, and so the larger mammals, predators, sleep until its cool enough to hunt, which is when we have to leave the park at dusk.

We make do with the three species of deers, several bird species including the Crested-serpent falcon and Brown fish owl, who we saw as we left the park at dusk.

Not much animals to report, as even the monkeys and apes were having a siesta, with sightings only happening in the final hour or so.

We came across a group of four elephant, just visible in the scrub. Mahindra tried to call them, but they carried on eating. Until, suddenly, one of the adults turned, ears at 90 degrees, trunk raised and trumpeting for all its worth, charged us.

It soon stopped, but the driver took no chances and we were off down the track, before any of us had a chance to sit down.

And then a trundle back to the gates, on the way seeing many more of the same animals, including five peacocks after seeing none all afternoon, and two Macaque monkeys guarding a bridge, but charged no toll.

Chakra Meditation with Bija (Seed) Mantras youtu.be/1QgFulu3iUA www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCefiias-6k A simple and powerful Chakra meditation led by Los Angeles based yoga teacher Noah Christiansen. This meditation video guides students through the chakra bija mantra, or seed sounds (LAM, VAM, RAM, YAM, HAM, OM) to open and activate the 7 main energetic centers of the body. Noah's guidance is clear and concise, and the Chakra Bija mediation will help you energetically, emotionally, mentally, physically & spiritually clear, calm and harmonize. You can practice this meditation for as long as you want to clear energetic blockages and deepen your awareness of the chakras. About Noah Christensen Noah Christensen survived his first yoga class in 2003 with Bryan Kest in Santa Monica, but it was not until 2009 that he discovered the sweet nectar of Bhakti Yoga. As he explored the path, he experiencing a profound opening within the practice and himself. Inspired by the endless wealth of the Bhakti tradition, Noah has studied yoga with Rudy Mettia, Travis Eliot, and Govindas, completing their teacher trainings with the goal of deepening his own practice. Teaching yoga grew naturally out of his inquiry into what yoga means. Because the practice is so sacred to each of us, Noah’s fundamental philosophy is to allow the practice to reveal itself: each yogi is invited to explore their own physical, emotional, and spiritual boundaries at their own pace and in a manner which is empowering and respectful of their divine nature. He is honored to share what he has learned and experienced along the path as an act of seva to the community. I spent 10 hours in the Emergency Room yesterday, and was relieved to find out via CT scan that I do not have appendicitis. Instead, I had a large ruptured ovarian cyst. The whole ER experience was exhausting and surreal.

Basil is out of town, so I spent most of the time alone in the little ER room, listening through the curtain to the other patients as they came and went. There was a case of sciatica, an elderly woman with a fractured hip, and a crazy woman with a head cold.

"I'm having a hard time breathing. I just can't breathe!" she was telling the doctor. I had to go into a fake coughing fit to mask my laughter when he asked her, "Have you tried blowing your nose?"

After it was all said and done, my mom came and took me out for something to eat. And I went to the pharmacy to pick up my painkillers and get some dog food.

I realized at some point that I was holding a bottle of Vicodin and the keys to my brother's truck. The keychain is one of his old Narcotics Anonymous "Clean and Serene" for 90 days badges.

No wonder they doctor only gave me a prescription for 10.

Let’s begin by learning some facts in order to separate truth from myth with regards to back pain. First of all, under one percent of acute lower back pain is the result of a serious infection or condition like cancer or a spinal injury. For those under 50, the rate is even lower. beginning in July 1984, this foot has taken a real beating... breaking the 5th metatarsal in USAF tech school, and then 4 successive breaks and severe sprains since. And the VA system review boards says "there is nothing wrong with this foot"... to which I have a service connected disability with a 10% rating. This injury came about due to another SC injury... my back which is/was @ 20% and getting worse. The same review board says they are cutting it back to 10% cause it is "better"... how does degenerative spine and sciatica get better? I fall all the time cause my legs just quit working.
