Scanography

Mirrors don't talk, and lucky for you they don't laugh either!

The particular beans that you see here are from a batch of Josuma Select Malabar Gold, a blend of coffee beans specially formulated for espresso.

In the center are the so called "green beans" before they were roasted, and on the outside are some beans after I roasted them in my home coffee roaster (a Fresh Roast Plus).

For espresso I manually grind them to a slightly gritty but still fine powder in a manual burr grinder (a Zassenhaus). This gets loaded and hand-tamped into a double basket portafilter, conventionally used to dose for a double shot, and inserted into either the La Cara or La Pavoni manual piston espresso machines. Both of these machines involve the user by having him push down on a lever to force the hot water through the tightly compacted espresso grounds.

The shot then gets pulled under great pressure into a pre-heated tazzina (a small espresso cup - I use a 68 cc feldspathic porcelain tazzina made by IPA Porcellane in Italy, pattern Bologna), for a total draw of around 1.25-1.5 ounces (2.5-3 tablespoons).

Such a very short shot is called a ristretto, which when made correctly has to be the purest form that one can enjoy an espresso - a wonderful concentration of coffee flavor with plenty of mouthfeel and a pleasant bitterness.

...and once in a blue moon when everything is right it produces the proverbial "god shot", which is actually creamy in taste. (And yes, this is all without using any milk! :-) )

Much has changed since I first posted this; here's a video on YouTube that shows my current eqiupment and workflow...

Also spotted in Flickr's explore ("interestingness") blog.

scanned on an Epson V500 scanner. No Humming birds were harmed during the scanning of this nest.

I've not been in the best frame of mind for photography over the last few days and I'm not going to trouble flickr with the last few days shots - if you are curious you can see them on my blog here - markseton.co.uk/2021/11/14/310-to-313-365v4-the-catch-up-...

Anyway, yesterday I tried my hand at a bit of "scanography". It's just a posh way of describing scanning your arse on the office photocopier!

I quite liked the results though!

♊ 2006 / Scanographie

I missed my scanography project today so decided to add to it.

Who saw the Oscars last night?? If you did, what did you think? Right people win?? I watched it through a live stream online till 5am and really enjoyed it. I was generally quite happy with the winners but maybe thats just the British pride coming through since we won a lot of the big awards :-D I loved the hosts because it felt so awkward to watch them keep trying (well, Anne Hathaway kept trying. James Franco was more into his video/photo posting online through the event I think - great thing for me) and I love awkward. I think it's the most hilarious thing ever. I think my fave line from the whole thing was "congrats Nerds" to the engineers behind all the new film technology. Ahhh. Anyway, what did you think?

Pink

“If hot red is for anger and rage, pink is the color of a soft burning – hot enough to light up the dark corners of sadness and grief, but cool enough to be tender, innocent, open.”

- Ibi Zoboi

My interpretation of the Self Portrait Sunday theme "Pink". I thought it was perfect for a scanography image! I love scanography, it gives you the possibility to create images where you are never sure of the outcome, except that it will be dreamy and ethereal

Scanography, n., the process of capturing digitized images for the purpose of creating art using a flatbed scanner.

(this could be a lot of fun!)

as inspired by the flickr blog.
