The Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow was built as a gratitude to God for help and intercession in the difficult period of the history of Russia - during the Patriotic War of 1812. This is a monument to the Russian people for their courage and heroism..The Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow is the largest cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church, containing up to 10,000 people. In terms of the cathedral was an equal-end cross over 85 meters wide. The height of the lower block is about 37 meters, the height of the drum is 28 meters, the height of the dome with a cross is 35 meters. The total height of the structure is 103 meters, the internal space is 79 meters. Wall thickness - up to 3.2 meters. The outer part was framed by a double row of marble high reliefs made by sculptors Klodt, Loginovsky and Ramazanov. All the entrance doors - only twelve - were made of bronze, and the images of the saints decorating them were cast according to sketches by the famous sculptor Count F. P. Tolstoy. The building was restored as close as possible to the original. In the construction used sketches and drawings of the last century. However, there are differences. A stylobate part with a height of 17 meters was built on the place of the base-hill, where the Church of the Transfiguration, refectory chambers and auxiliary services are located. Here are also the Halls of Church Councils and meetings of the Holy Synod. A ramp is built for entry. Elevators are installed in the columns and in the stylobate part. Marble from the Chelyabinsk region and red granite brought from Finland were used for decoration.

An unusual picture - domes on the ground. They are intended for the Orthodox Church of the Forty Martyrs in Konakovo. Tver region. Russia.
Gold. The most common color of Orthodox domes represents eternity and heavenly glory. Temples with golden domes were dedicated to Christ and the great church holidays - Christmas, Meeting, Annunciation. Such chapters crown the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the Kremlin cathedrals - the Assumption, Annunciation, Arkhangelsk.
Currently, domes are not clad with gold, but earlier the metal was dissolved in mercury, and then the resulting amalgam was applied to a hot copper sheet. The gilding process was very expensive and labor intensive.
The onion dome in Orthodox architecture is the embodiment of prayer, aspiration to heaven. According to researcher Yevgeny Trubetskoy, such a dome on the base of the drum resembles a candle flame. Onion-shaped chapters are characteristic of Russian architecture of the 16th – 17th centuries.

The Rat Savior is a 1976 Croatian fantastic horror film directed by Krsto Papić. It was released in 1976, and was selected as the Yugoslav entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 49th Academy Awards. In 1999, a poll of Croatian film critics found it to be one of the best Croatian films ever made.
The plot: A man uncovers a race of intelligent rats who can appear as human. He is captured and taken to the rat people’s leader (the "savior" of the movie's title). He escapes, but then wonders who among his fellow humans is a rat person in disguise.
One of the movie locations was also the building in the photo, located in the historic part of Zagreb, Croatia. I watched the movie as a small child and, as a result, spent the rest of my childhood and early teens scared to death of that building. Of course, it sounds silly now. :-)

These statues are part of an art exhibition in Budapest.
The New World Design for Contemporary Art presents almost 600sqm of the world of the Great War, which can be seen as the epoch that radically changed the world order of the time: the formerly stable empires have dissolved, culture and public thought have changed dramatically. World War II buried the old world, the result of a new world conflagration and then the Cold War. Europe was bleak in the twilight that the 20th century was dominated by America and Russia.
The exhibition takes visitors from happy peace to enthusiasm for war and bitter disappointment. It shows how the civilization of civilized and global warfare was fought, how the 19th century came to a standstill and the hinterland became the battlefield. The nature of war has changed: victory has now become a function of the amount of war material.

Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Savior was built between 1745-1754 is a oval rococo church in the municipality of Steingaden in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany. The Wieskirche was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
"In 1738, tears were seen on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour. This miracle resulted in a pilgrimage rush to see the sculpture. In 1740, a small chapel was built to house the statue but it was soon realized that the building would be too small for the number of pilgrims it attracted, and so Steingaden Abbey decided to commission a separate shrine. Many who have prayed in front of the statue of Jesus on the altar, have claimed that people have been miraculously cured of their diseases, which has made this church even more of a pilgrimage site." The iconography of the image is unusual: John the Baptist is depicted with angelic wings. This is a symbolic image that reveals his special mission as a messenger ("angelos" in Greek - "messenger, messenger"), prophet and forerunner of the Messiah (Christ).

A very interesting series that had been published during the spring of this year. If you haven't read this series, do check it out. If you want it in one shot, you could always wait for the TPB in spring of 2016. Savior follows the story surrounding the origin or quite possibly the downfall of a mysterious character.
