“Almost every country in the world still has laws that discriminate against women, and promises to remedy this have not been kept.” (UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the eve of International Women's Day 2008)
According to one United Nations estimate, 113 to 200 million women are “demographically missing” from the world today. That is to say, there should be 113 to 200 million more women walking the earth, who aren’t. By that same estimate, 1.5 to 3 million women and girls lose their lives every year because of gender-based neglect or gender-based violence and Sexual Violence in Conflict ( Read more about UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict www.stoprapenow.org/ ). Millions of young women disappear in their native land every year. Many of them are found later being held against their will in other places and forced into prostitution. According to the UNICEF ( www.unicef.org/gender/index_factsandfigures.html ),Girls between 13 and 18 years of age constitute the largest group in the sex industry. It is estimated that around 500,000 girls below 18 are victims of trafficking each year. United Nations agencies estimated that every year 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing the procedure – which involves the partial or total removal of external female genital organs – that some 140 million women, mostly in Asia, the Middle East and in Africa, have already endured. We can point a finger at poverty. But poverty alone does not result in these women’s deaths and suffering; the blame also falls on the social system and attitudes of the societies.
India alone accounts for more than 50 million of the women who are “missing” due to female foeticide - the sex-selective abortion of girls, dowry death, gender-based neglect and all forms of violence against women.
Since the late 1970s when the technology for sex determination first came into being, sex selective abortion has unleashed a saga of horror in India. Experts are calling it "sanitized barbarism".The 2001 Census conducted by Government of India, showed a sharp decline in the child sex ratio in 80% districts of India. The Census Report of 2001 reveals a highly skewed child sex ratio (0-6 year-olds), that fell from 945 females per 1,000 males in 1991 to an all-time low of 927 in 2001. Additional data from the India’s birth and death registration service indicates that the figures have further fallen to fewer than 900 females per 1,000 men over the last few years. In some parts of the country, the sex ratio of girls to boys has dropped to less than 800:1,000. It's alarming that even liberal states like those in the northeast have taken to disposing of girls. Worryingly, the trend is far stronger in urban rather than rural areas, and among literate rather than illiterate women, exploding the myth that growing affluence and spread of basic education alone will result in the erosion of gender bias.
The United Nations has expressed serious concern about the situation.
Over the years, laws have been made stricter and the punishment too is more stringent now. But since many people manage to evade punishment, others too feel inclined to take the risk. Just look at the way sex-determination tests go on despite a stiff ban on them. Only if the message goes out loud and clear that nobody who dares to snuff out the life of a female foetus would escape effective legal system would the practice end. It is only by a combination of monitoring, education, socio-cultural campaigns, and effective legal implementation that the deep-seated attitudes and practices against women and girls can be eroded.
The decline in the sex ratio and the millions of Missing Women are indicators of the feudal patriarchal resurgence. Violence against women has gone public – whether it is dowry murders,the practice of female genital mutilation , honour killings, sex selective abortions or death sentences awarded to young lovers from different communities by caste councils, rapes and killings in communal and caste violence, it is only women’s and human rights groups who are protesting – the public and institutional response to these trends is very minimal.
Millions of women suffer from discrimination in the world of work. This not only violates a most basic human right, but has wider social and economic consequences. Most of the governments turn a blind eye to illegal practices and enact and enforce discriminatory laws. Corporations and private individuals engage in abusive and discriminatory practices without fear of legal system. Sexual harassment and violence in the workplace are common and constant threats to working women’s lives and livelihoods.
More women are working now than ever before, but they are also more likely than men to get low-productivity, low-paid and vulnerable jobs, with no social protection, basic rights nor voice at work according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) issued for International Women’s Day 2008.

After just having tossed off the rider, managing to get a horn under his flack jacket, and tossing him around, the rodeo clowns were quick to distract this bull and save the day.
You have to give the clowns credit for being pretty gutsy to get in the middle of that. The rider was a bit battered, I'm sure, but was able to walk off the field and wave to the crowd.
I have been thinking about going back to Yosemite to see the Firefalls again in mid February. It just happened that I remembered this photo I took on the street of Berkeley earlier last year. What was he thinking? Save the park??
i know it sounds pathetic, but this little monkey made me cry.. sometimes i don't do as well as i could with the environmente, even though i try really hard to create concience on people around me.
by the way this picture came out on a visit to the zoo a year ago and it stills makes me wonder how this planet is going to end up.
hope i get to build a better relationship with the planet this 2010.

Enfim, esse esmalte é muito drag, mas esses fiapinhos (azuis e holos) dele levantam e arranharam meu rosto, arranquei uns que se rebelaram mas ficou tudo de boa.

Perhaps one can notice the difference between these two recent Tulsa shots and the preceding New Jersey shots. This is actually a different image than the black and white. I shot this one a little more straight on and I was able to 'correct' it enough to make the lines pretty straight. Why I cropped the bottom of the black and white.

There is something unique and wonderful about polaroid film that digital photos can never capture!
There is nothing like watching polaroids develop right infront of your eyes!
I think, or rather we think, it would be a complete mistake to get rid of polaroid film!

An important thing to remember is that even though pixel sizes keep getting smaller and smaller, the technology is advancing, so the smaller pixels are more efficient at collecting light. For instance, the Sony A7rII is back-illuminated which allows more photons to hit the sensor. Semiconductor technology is always advancing, so the brilliant engineers are always improving the signal/noise ratio. Far higher pixel counts, as well as better dynamic ranger, are thus not only possible, but the future!
Yes I have a Ph.D. in physics! I worked on phototranistors and photodiodes as well as an artificial retina for the blind. :)

FIRMA PER FERMARE LE PIATTAFORME PETROLIFERE ALLE CANARIE...
Un progetto per la realizzazione di piattaforme petrolifere minaccia i mari e le spiagge delle Canarie. Il WWF locale si oppone, sono a rischio ambienti e specie rare come tartarughe marine e delfini, ma anche il turismo. Firma anche tu la petizione.
La compagnia petrolifera spagnola Repsol, la stessa che si pubblicizza sulle moto del Mondiale di Motociclismo, ha giá ricevuto il permesso del Governo spagnolo per realizzare a 10 km dalla costa di Lanzarote e Fuerteventura impianti di prospezione petrolifera. Obiettivo è la perforazione di due pozzi di esplorazione che potrebbero raggiungere la profonditá di 3.500 metri. Per le spiagge della costa orientale di Fuerteventura e di Lanzarote, giá invase dal turismo di massa, sarebbe il colpo del KO.
Da due anni, una campagna promossa dal WWF/Adena, nelle Canarie, ha riscontrato, grazie ai satelliti spaziali della ESA (l'Agenzia Spaziale Europea) piú di 150 macchie di greggio che le petroliere hanno riversato in mare a seguito della pulizia dei loro depositi. Questi fenomeni diffusi di inquinamento, in acque dove già si concentra la terza densitá di traffico petrolifero a livello mondiale, fanno di questi mari una delle zone piú minacciate del Pianeta.
I progetti di ricerca petrolifera minacceranno la pesca, la natura della costa delle isole Canarie, le stupende spiagge, la vita nei fondali rocciosi e sabbiosi, e poi delfini, balene, tartarughe marine e molte altre specie preziose di flora e di fauna della regione.
Il modello di sviluppo economico scelto dalla maggioranza degli abitanti delle Canarie è quello della conservazione dell'ambiente e della ricchezza naturale delle due isole. Lo stesso turismo subirebbe un grave colpo se questi progetti andassero in porto.
A Lanzarote, dichiarata Riserva della Biosfera dall'UNESCO nel 1993, l' amministrazione autonoma ha deciso all'unanimitá di opporsi ai piani di Repsol e alla installazione di piattaforme petrolifere. Non é successo lo stesso a Fuerteventura, lisola vicina, dove la maggior parte dei comuni e dei sindaci sono inquisiti per corruzione e dove un sistema clientelare lascia in mano a speculatori edilizi il futuro dell'isola, e dove l'autorità autonoma non si é mai espressa a riguardo.
MAREA NERA IN VISTA
Il rischio di grandi catastrofi, come sversamenti di petrolio o scarichi di fluidi inquinanti in mare é reale e abituale. Ecco i maggiori incidenti avvenuti negli ultimi anni.
1977: La piattaforma petrolifera BRAVO scarica 22.500 tonnellate di petrolio in un incidente avvenuto nel giacimento di Ekofisk.
1979: Un'esplosione nel pozzo di produzione IXTOC PEMEX I nel Golfo del Mexico produce una gigantesca marea nera, finiscono in mare piú di 1,4 milioni di tonnellate di petrolio. Considerata una delle maggiori catastrofi della storia.
1980: Affonda la piattaforma petrolifera Alexandre Kielland in Norvegia , 123 persone perdono la vita.
1983: Si riversano in mare 0,27 milioni di tonnellate di petrolio nel mar Persico procedenti dai pozzi della Iranian Nowruz Field dopo gli attacchi dellÌraq del 4 febbraio 1983.
1984: Esplode una piattaforma en la Cuenca de Campos. Muoiono 36 lavoratori, 17 risultano feriti e si produce una grande marea nera.
1985:Esplode un pozzo petrolifero della compagnia PEMEX scaricando 0,1 tonnellate di petrolio nel Golfo del Mexico.
1995: La compagnia petrolifera SHELL prova ad abbandonare e affondare la piattaforma B.S. nel Mar del Nord. Grazie alle pressioni di Greenpeace e ad altre organizzazioni ecologiste internazionali la SHELL é obbligata a trasferirla a terra per smantellarla.
2001: La piattaforma petrolifera Byford Dolphin Oil finisce alla deriva di fronte alla costa norvegese con 71 persone in seguito ad un forte temporale.

a wedding save the date card I made. if you arent familiar with this layout, its from the DVD cover of the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith, starring brad pitt and angelina jolie (shes so hot). i love working with this couple. if you go back into my pictures i shot this girl a million times. shot her maternity shots, shot her newborn, and now shooting her wedding.

You know when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales? That fantasy of what your life would be – white dress, prince charming who'd carry you away to a castle on a hill. You'd lie in your bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa clause, the tooth fairy, prince charming –they were so close you could taste them. But eventually you grow up and one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is, it's hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely because almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope and faith that one day they would open their eyes and it would all come true.
At the end of the day, faith is a funny thing. It turns up when you don't really expect it. It's like one day you realize that the fairy tale is slightly different than your dream. The castle, well it may not be a castle. And it's not so important that it's happily ever after – just that it's happy right now. See, once in a while, once in a blue moon, people will surprise you. And once in a while, people may even take your breath away.
