Gang of Five Walk, April 15, 2014:

Paddington to Willesden along the Paddington Branch of the Grand Union Canal.

Paradise By Way Of Kensal Green (3)

This pub was our lunch stop. It is in Kensal Green (not surprisingly, given the full name of the pub) on Kilburn Lane, and this part of Kilburn Lane seems to be just inside the London Borough of Brent. (The opposite side of the road to the pub is in the City of Westminster).

The winged hour-glass signs on the door medallions, are a more stylized rendering of the hour-glass on the pub sign, and evidently represent the passing of time in connection with the origin of the pub's name. For more on this and the history and signficance of the pub name, see the previous photo (DSC_0030).

The pub, built early in the 20th Centure, was originally 'Ye Old Plough' and this was changed to 'Paradise ...' some time after 1944.

(I couldn't capture the entire doorway, arched sourround and doors together. I didn't have a wide-angle option with me, and had to stand well out in the busy road, close behind a large parked van for protection from the traffic, just to get this part of the doorway.)

Over 60 local, interstate and international artists will transform Perth's most popular beach into a stunning sculpture park overlooking the Indian Ocean.

The fifth annual Sculpture by the Sea will be staged on Cottesloe Beach from 5 - 24 March 2009.

So I went and saw the sculptures two weeks ago, but I went on a hot Sunday so the beach was completely packed. And I forgot to take my camera. So a friend and I went down yesterday evening (getting the last hour of sunlight) to get some snaps. I've just uploaded photos of my favourite sculptures. :)

The 50mm f1.4 lens has come to work with me too....

When I'm between tasks at my desk and don't know what to start on next, I turn over the hourglass and watch the colored bubbles race down for a while..... takes about 90 seconds. maybe I should have taken a video instead !

Another stab at shooting vintage-looking fine-art still lifes. Practice makes perfect? Well, I'm definitely practicing!

In the sands of the the Baie de Tamarone, on the northern tip of Corsica (September2007).

This one was a little difficult timing-wise, ironically. I tried the light painting in a dark room without any other light sources at first, but that didn't give me enough light on the hourglass. So, I brought out one of my studio lights to illuminate it, but that was bright enough that if I set the exposure for as long as I'd been using for the light-painting, the hourglass blew out. I compensated by decreasing the shutter speed and doing speedy-painting.

Next time, what I might do is just move the studio light back a little ways or remove one of the bulbs, or ditch the studio light entirely and illuminate the hourglass by shining the flashlight on it for a few seconds. But it's fun to experiment with mixing different light sources and long exposures and seeing what you get.

The USS Eldridge was a Cannon-class destroyer escort. It served in the United States Navy in World War II. During that time, it is rumored that the Eldridge was the test ship in a project known as the "Philadelphia Experiment." Although accounts vary, some witnesses claim the Eldridge temporarily disappeared from the Philadelphia harbor in 1943 for a short period of time. Its appearance off the shore of Micropolis- several years after the ship was scrapped- suggests the Philadelphia Experiment either was more successful than previously acknowledged or some interaction between that experiment and Professor Millennium's time twisting brought the ship to the present....
