We always called her 'Bee' shortly after her death there were many strange things that happened to family members which involved bees.

The jam sampler platter comes with 3 jams, 2 large buttermilk scones and butter ($7).

Silverware, linen and laser embossed wood serving platter complete the charming service. Also great company from Sophie and Bobby. :)

Look at the jams. Besides colour, it was the suspended fruit and gorgeous elderflowers in the strawberry-gooseberry-elderflower jam that caught my eye. So pretty. Even better, the taste and texture. It was a concentrated but loose jam, almost runny but not drippy. The mild sweet and tartness, was complimented by the floral aroma; it was neither saccharine nor did it have anything the tasted standardized monotonous. It just reminded me of fresh, off the vine, wild strawberries that you pick in mid-afternoon, after you brush off some of the residual dirt.

Did I mention how pretty it was?

I was surprised. I thought for sure I'd like the apricot amaretto or the blueberry, white peach and Masala Chai more. But nope. It was the strawberry elderflower that won my heart.

I'm really looking forward to the "crab apple marmalade" and the "plum and port" jams I had the chance to early sample. The holiday season can't come fast enough.

Kitten and the Bear is part retail, part jam and tea room. The small menu features a tight jam-friendly menu. Their hand-made, limited-batch jams and marmalades are cooked in a traditional French-style unlined copper confiture pan using seasonal heirloom fruit that’s spiked with spices, flowers/pine, tea and spirits with no additives or pectin. The bright fruit-forward confiture – some with chunks of soft fruit suspended within – come in flavours such as strawberry, gooseberry and fresh elderflower or blueberry, white peach and Sloane’s Masala Chai tea. They also carry clotted cream imported from Devon.

This is a sampler worked by Elizabeth Emery, from Coventry. She was aged 8 Years when she completed it on 20th February 1837.

The text reads

Next unto God dear Parents I address.

Myself to you in humble thankfulness.

For all your care and charge on me bestow'd

And means of Learning unto me allow'd

It is the same verse that Esther Shuffle used in her sampler.

Samplers were first made in the 1400s or 1500s as a way of remembering different types of stitches or patterns. Over time they evolved into pieces of work made by young girls, proving their knowledge and patience.

The Herbert has over 60 samplers in its collection. With volunteers from NADFAS we have recently completed a project to improve their storage and to make them more accessible. You can see some of the samplers on display at the Herbert in the History Gallery, Connected and in What's in Store.

This was my first ever full sized quilt. It's not at ALL my style, not even when I was making it, but I didn't know that I could break the quilting rules. (I had a strict quilt teacher)

There's heaps of mistakes all throughout, but I don't care, I'm still happy it's done. Machine pieced and quilted, finished 1997ish.

Sampler Socks from the book Sock Yarn One Skein Wonders. Yarn is Same Difference from the Knitting Goddess, in colourway Cloudy Skies.

I thought this “Same Difference” yarn -- half a skein in white and blue, the other other half skein in blue and white -- would be a good match for these sampler socks, which each use a different combination of stitch patterns.

This is my first successful attempt at knitting socks!

A little "family" sampler I drew up and stitched. Details at HollyAbston.com

The Autumn Sampler, pattern by The Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery. This was one of my goals for the first quarter finish along, and I was so close to meeting my goal, but alas it will carry over to the next quarter. I only have the black and white floss color left to stitch!

I am compulsively stitching on to my paper sampler.

I have added mainly waxed paper to a handmade paper and tissue paper background, and then altered the surface by using wire, hand and machine embroidery.
