A Subaru Sambar 360 Van, seen in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico. It looked alright but had no plates and was only used to advertise a car wash, from what I could tell.

Time will tell whether this new version of the cute but oh so small Matchbox Subaru Sambar will become a pegwarmer. Despite reverting back to these awful wheel and no front tampo detailing collectors may be persuaded by its interesting Japanese livery which I believe translates as "Speedy Mail. Part of 2022 Case C. Mint and boxed.

Unique Little Car Show,

Female sambar deer drinking from a pond at Rathambore National Park. Taken with a Sony A7 111 and 24-105mm lens at 70mm at 3:10pm on 31st March 2025. ISO 250, f/11, 1/50s.

Awesome little truck!

This would not have been an original candidate for the 'Square Cars' album but I did not want to create another. Perhaps showing my ignorance, I was surprised that this VW badged vehicle is in fact a Subaru Sambar, produced as a VW Camper Van mini-replica. This example at Tesco Havant failed to display a front number plate.

VIDEO OF MY TRIP

Jim Corbett National Park, which is a part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, a Project Tiger Reserve lies in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The magical landscape of Corbett is well known and fabled for its tiger richness. Established in the year 1936 as Hailey National Park, Corbett has the glory of being India's oldest and most prestigious National Park. It is also being honored as the place where Project Tiger was first launched in 1973. This unique tiger territory is best known as the father who gave birth of the Project Tiger in India to protect the most endangered species and the Royal of India called Tigers.

The sambar (Rusa unicolor) is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.

They are favourite prey of tigers and Asiatic lions. In India, the sambar can comprise up to nearly 60% of the prey selected by the Bengal tiger. Anecdotally, the tiger is said to even mimic the call of the sambar to deceive it while hunting.

Posting here after a while. This picture is from my recent visit to Ranthambore National Park in last Christmas (2020)

Kanha NP, India

Lots of these can be found in each case of 2020 Batch B especially our UK 72 count cases so predictably a few more came home with me. Looking far more complete now Matchbox have given it the front tampo detailing it deserves and of course those dinky little chrome disc wheels. A very surprising vehicle choice for them, its the type of tiny Japanese Kei commercial truck you'd expect to see at Tomica. Mint and boxed.

Pity the poor Matchbox Subaru Sambar, a guaranteed pegwarmer internationally despite potentially being a hit with Tomicaratti ;-p

Its very small size could be one of the reasons for its lack of love with many collectors plus most releases go without much needed front detailing. This is its latest 2022 Case C recolour which has a very Japanese theme to it though i've no idea what the writing actually translates to. Mint and boxed.

Ingredients

Yellow lentils (Tuvar Daal)=====1 tea cup full

Turmeric powder (haldi)=======1/4 tsp

Red Chilli powder (hot)============1/4 tsp

Sambar powder============4 tsp

Garlic======================3 cloves

Mustard seeds==============1 tsp

Shallots=====================5

Tamarind paste===============1 tsp

Vegetable oil================3 tbsp

Curry leaves================1 sprig

Vegetables to boil

green runner beans===========1/2 cup

green peas==================1/2 cup

aubergine===================1/4 (of medium size)

Tomato====================1

☺♥

The "vegetables to boil" above can be substituted with vegetables of your choice e.g. green peppers, cauliflower, corn etc

All these ingredients are available at any Indian store (some supermarkets e.g. Tescos also stock ingredients for Indian cooking now)

Method

1. Wash the yellow lentils 3-4 times in water before use. Cook them with turmeric powder, chili powder and 1 tsp oil until soft. If you are using a pressure cooker, remove from heat after one whistle and leve until pressure comes down to normal. If not, soak the lentils overnight in water and boil in a covered vessel for ~30 minutes until cooked and soft throughout.

2. Chop the tomato and aubergine.

3. Add all the "vegetables to boil" listed above to the cooked lentils and boil for 10 minutes. In the meantime carry out steps 4, 5 and 6 below.

4. Remove skin from shallots and cut in half. Crush and chop the garlic cloves finely.

5. Heat 3 table spoons of vegetable oil (olive / sunflower etc.) in a pan on high heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them crackle for a few seconds. Add the curry leaves and stir.

6. Reduce the heat. Add the garlic and the shallots and fry for a few seconds. Add the sambar powder and stir. Fry for 5 seconds. Take care not to burn the sambar powder.

7. Add the fried mix to the cooked yellow lentils and stir. Add salt to taste.

8. Add the tamarind paste.

9. Boil the mix for 10 minutes on medium heat.

10. Serve with rice, pickle and poppadums.

1995 Subaru Sambar.

Registered in June 2008.

Previously registered M256 ONH.

This fine looking male was seen in Tadoba Tiger reserve where they make a fair proportion of the tigers diet.

Looking so cute and so eager to please you sometimes feel like patting it on the head and throwing it a ball! The dimensionally challenged new Matchbox Subaru Sambar enters Tomica territory in terms of subject matter and one which could have been treated more seriously had they bothered to give it any frontal detailing. Hopefully some subsequent recolours will address that glaring omission but overall its still a likeable little buzz box nicely finished and wearing subtle side graphics.

Part of a sizeable Case Q haul found recently at One Below. Mint and boxed.

The super cute Matchbox 2014 Subaru Sambar continues to be a chronic peg warmer when sold as a single which is rather unfortunate. No such worries when its part of a nine vehicle set, one found recently at a French E.Leclerc Jouet. Mint and boxed.

Cervus unicolor

Subaru Sambar Kei class truck imported from Japan. This one is rare in that it doesn't have a landscape or similar business lettering on it.

Now nicely detailed both front and rear and with much more appropriate basic chrome disc wheels. One a few more found recently at Tesco. Mint and boxed.

The version we should really have seen on this castings debut with MUCH MUCH needed front tampo detailing and more appropriate chrome disc wheels. Yes its a tiny little thing, just like the real vehicle, but it punches above its weight with the cuteness and obscurity factor. Not the type of van we see in the UK much anymore but are still very popular in the Far East where road space is at a premium. Part of Case B which continues to be a very rare sight in UK Tesco stores. Mint and boxed.

LOL. This imported Kei Class Van came with the VW Appearance Package.
