Sambar at Tadoba Andheri Tiger Reserve

Thank heavens this little cutie has finally made its way to the UK thanks to its inclusion in a new nine vehicle set which have just begun to hit Tesco. Like the real thing this Matchbox Subaru Sambar really is teeny weeny, thankfully MBX have dare not use plastic for its body otherwise it would probably blow over if somebody sneezed near it! ;-p

The market for such tiny vans and pick-ups has pretty much dried up here with only a few obscure Chinese marques carrying on but at one time were a very common sight on our roads particularly of the Bedford and Isuzu kind. For such a small diecast i'm surprised Matchbox have skimped on front tampo detailing instead giving it some side Subaru badging so on this occasion I couldn't resist using some Molotow on its headlights. Mint and boxed.

Modifying these little Kei vans to resemble VW buses is something they do in Japan. This is the first one I've seen stateside. 6th Annual Benefit Custom Car Show, Church of the Open Door, York, PA, May 27, 2023.

If you rummage deep enough to the bottom of the Matchbox tray in Tesco you may well still find the white Ford Falcon Ranchero and I suspect the same fate is awaiting this other white pick-up! Not a fate which befalls this example as its part of one of the new nine vehicle sets to arrive at Tesco which have the Datsun Bluebird 510 as their exclusive models. Mint and boxed.

Will a fresh new recolour help this little Matchbox Subaru Sambar from being a major pegwarmer? Probably not but as a casting i've always had a soft spot for it and will no doubt buy a few more in the near future. Mint and boxed.

I can't wait to print this. Big.

I stole Fred's 24mm f/2.8 for this as my 50 just wasn't cutting it. Set it on a smooshed out Gorillapod at the far end of the next table.

Strobist: single bare SB-800 on 1/16th power (Fred, is that right?) bounced off wall immediately behind us.

I think this is may be my favorite 365 so far ...

There seemed to be plenty of excitement from collectors when Matchbox announced they were going to release a tiny Kei class Japanese pick-up. They chose the Daihatsu based Subaru Sambar which was sensible enough yet this poor casting has become a major peg warmer wherever it is sold. I don't know if its a bit TOO small for most tastes and too bizarre for children but the truth is this casting just doesn't sell.

There are masses of them in every Tesco I visit and so feeling sorry for them I brought a few more home. Ironically this second release is its best so far with much needed front detailing and riding on chrome disc wheels. Mint and boxed.

Sambar deer enjoy the peace of dawn on a beach in West Bali National Park. Researchers have realised recently that these deer can survive by drinking seawater. They are considered semi-sacred by fishermen who believe that effigies of these deer (which have been seen swimming between islands) protect their boats.

Not your typical Balinese view!

Subaru Sambar customized to look like VW Type 2

Didn't have a clue what this was, must have been imported.

Saw this in Victoria B.C., and took the picture because we don't have these on the street in Washington state until 25 years old.

I have seen masses of these new Matchbox Subaru Sambar Trucks on the pegs of One Below recently but only decided to buy a small handful. There is a lot to like about this tiny little Japanese commercial vehicle, the type once popular here but have largely disappeared, but I just can't bear seeing it without ANY frontal tampo detailing whatsoever. I would have been happier sacrificing the side "Subaru" graphics but thats Mattel for you. A bit of Molotow and a bit of black Sharpie soon sorted it out though.
