The ILO Water and Sanitation Project launched three new water systems built by 269 workers, benefitting over 2,000 households in five barangays in Balabagan, Lanao del Sur. A melting pot of various cultures, Balabagan is home to the Maranaos, settlers, and indigenous peoples who used to buy drinking water for US$ 2 per 200-litre drum.

"Either we will learn to bury the animosities of our ethnocentric, militant traditions, and come to understand that Earth's survival depends on our collective, unified participation, or we will sustain this cycle of violence and revenge, until humanity is returned to the status of primitivism and Earth reduced to the rubble of antiquity. It is really up to us."

Safer Houses Training of Trainers – the builders or handymen are trained over 4 days. The training is a combination of theory and practice. During this training, participants learn to carry out a diagnostic assessment of the houses and to determine which technical solutions must be applied in order to reinforce the houses effectively. At the end of the 4 days, they become Community Trainers and are sent into the community to run Safer Houses Community Trainings.

All of the words that we dared never speak

All of our ghosts and the secrets we keep

Gather them all and we'll bury them deep

Like a safe full of sorrow.

The Safer Houses methodology falls under the organization of 2 trainings and then community work:

1-Safer Houses Training of Trainers, 4-day training for 8 to 10 participants, mainly for builders or handymen willing to learn how to reinforce a house and assist community members in providing basic knowledge on reinforcement techniques.

2-Safer Houses Community training, 2-day training for 12 to 15 community members, anyone willing to learn how to reinforce a house through a do-it-yourself training and to assist other community members

An "interactive" piece (or should I say peices) of art and I must say, we were quite active. Really brought out the kid in me. This was in an art gallery in Bangkok. I was surprised we could take pictures of most of the art.
