The other day we went to Tzfat, one of the four holy cities for Jews and the center of Kabbalah study. It was a grown-up trip. Petya rented a car, and we joined him. Tzfat is all about mountains, up and down, just like our Haifa. And lots and lots of Haredim—“those who tremble before God”—religious Jews. Yeshivas (institutions of higher learning in Judaism, where the Talmud and other traditional Jewish disciplines are studied, as well as preparing candidates for the rabbinate) are everywhere. Many young Haredi men with suitcases—they came to study.
We were, I believe, very lucky. We stumbled upon a wedding. I was hesitant to take photos. I suppose it’s a part of my current stage of growing older. But I couldn’t resist—I joined the crowd of photographers and clicked the button a couple of times. The bride was stunning.
The crowd was friendly. We went down another street because Petya wanted to visit a very old synagogue, the Abuhav Synagogue, with painted ceilings. We tried to bypass the wedding procession, which is no easy task in the narrow streets of Tzfat. And we ran into them again.
They were just entering the synagogue. We were invited in, too. Everyone was given a cookie.

Poor little Missy was left at the shelter for too long…
I had planned on taking her home to foster as soon as her time was up, but at the last minute her “real” owner phoned the shelter. The woman said that she had been looking all over for Missy, and that she would come to reclaim her the next day. Over the next several days the woman called each day, each time with a different excuse as to why she couldn’t pick Missy up. Finally the woman stopped calling. But in the meanwhile, little Missy was traumatized. She HATED the shelter and became very stressed.
Eventually another family adopted Missy, but after only 2 days, they returned her to the shelter because she was sick. Apparently Missy was vomiting everything they fed her, even water. The shelter took Missy to the vet where they decided that she was only suffering from stress induced vomiting and upset stomach. She was prescribed antibiotics and something to calm her stomach. Since the shelter is so busy and unable to give any animal special treatment, I brought Missy home with me.
The very first night she was here, Missy did not vomit, and in fact, I’ve never seen her vomit. I don’t know if that’s due to the medications or just because she feels safe and calm in my home. She was very lethargic though, and had lost a lot of weight due to her illness. The good news is that each day Missy has gotten a little bit better, and as of today, she’s eating fine, playing with Pokey, Darla and Boo, and chasing cats, ducks and goats!

I have no idea why this place decided to put a safe in the bathroom.
Maybe they keep their TP in there??
Or maybe they already had the safe and they built the bathroom around it.
Either way it is an interesting Public Bathroom.
Good for round 51

Artist Ilona Granet worked with local domestic violence shelters in the creation of her street signs with the aim of aiding the community in its battle against domestic violence. The artist had originally installed a couple of the signs in the Village in the late 1980’s. With support from NYCDOT, they were reinstalled with a few additions to stimulate a discussion and raise awareness about gender and race issues. The signs were installed as part of Jamaica Center for the Arts and Learning’s “Jamaica Flux 2010: Workspaces and Windows."
