These are mysterious. They occur all over the island, and their purpose is totally unknown. Many ideas, all of which have problems.

I spotted this eight trailing a doe on the far side of a field. I waited 5 minutes and proceeded into the pines behind them. He spotted me right away but wouldn't leave the doe. As I tried to work to a better angle a 5 pt strolled up intent on the doe and blocked my approach. He kept his distance from the 8pt, and the 8pt made sure he stayed between the 5pt and the doe. All went well until the wind shifted toward the doe and she bolted, 8pt in tow, and the 5pt 50yards behind. I guess I'm going to have to get a new deodorant, but a nice end to a morning afield none the less.

The sandstone rocks near Guernsey tell the story of the wagon trains of emigrants headed west in the mid-1800s. While trail ruts carved by thousands of wagons dot the western landscape, most pale in comparison to those found at the Oregon Trail Ruts site in Wyoming. Here, the trail ruts are not to be missed since they are carved into the stone. Some gouges are more than four feet deep! These deep ruts result from years of wagon wear and from intentional cutting by emigrants attempting to ease the steep passage up from the level river bottom to the High Plains.
