DeSoto. Model year: 1947. Owner: Þórður Þorsteinsson.
The first owner was the Ministry of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs. On December 2, 1955, Gunnlaugur Ólafsson (address: BlönduhlÃð 2, ReykjavÃk) bought the car with the license plate number R 4313 from the Minister of Justice. The car was then re-registered with Gunnlaugur’s license number: R 1231.
In 1956, Þórður Þorsteinsson from Selfoss purchased the car and then it got the license plate X 559. In 1958, Þórður sold the car to Loftur Jóhannsson from Ljósafoss with the license plate. He owned the car for many years or until he sold it to Einar Ingvarsson, probably somewhere between 1975 and 1977. Then the car got the license number X 2392.
Einar started to tear down the car and make it rustproof, but on January 11, 1980 he sold the car—as is—to Birgir H. Guðmundsson (address: Dalsbyggð 9, Garðabær). The car then got the license number G 7706 which was the last license number, because Birgir tore the car down completely and began supplying parts from it. Then Birgir sold the car, disassembled and it changed hands like that five times, in pieces!
In February 2003, I ¬[Þórður Þorsteinsson] heard the wreck was at Snæbjörn Magnússon’s. I started looking and this would be my first car, that I got when I was 17 years old! Snæbjörn sold me the wreck—the body was then still in ReykjavÃk—February 16, 2003. Since then I have been restoring it. Lots of parts got lost when I was moving it and I have been having trouble finding spare parts.

A usual notorious rust area for most cars is the where the wheel well meets the rear bumper. The photo shows inside the rear right wheel well looking back towards the rear bumper. I scrubbed, degreased and washed out all of the crud from this area then applied several coats of Tremclad flat grey rust paint. I then sprayed the rubberized asphalt spray to seal it up.

The GAZ M21 Volga is an automobile produced in the Soviet Union by GAZ (Gorkovsky Avtomobilniy Zavod, in English "Gorky automobile factory") from 1956 to 1970. The first car to carry the Volga name, it was developed in the early 1950s. Volgas were built with high ground clearance (which gives it a specific "high" look, contrary to "low-long-sleek" look of Western cars of similar design), rugged suspension, strong and forgiving engine, and rustproofing on a scale unheard of in the 1950s.
I bagged a second hand crankshaft pulley/vibration damper (right) on ebay for £15 delivered which is just a tad better than the £466 BMW want for a new one!
When I removed the original off the engine for cleaning it was well and truly stuck on with rust and was itself badly corroded around the inner face of the pulley part. During removal, the face that attaches to the crank was buckled and though I did my best to hammer it back true the metal had already stretched. I ground out the rust on the pulley and painted it up but was always concerned this would have upset the balance. You can see how manky the old one was HERE
When I ran the engine for the first time I noticed that the pulley was not running true and this was either down to not sitting flush on the crank or the balance issue. If left as is it would prematurely wear the thrust bearing on the crank causing expensive damage.
The replacement is actually from a 1996 6 cylinder 2 litre engine but the part number matches. They physically look different though. The old one is thick and flat where as the new one is thinner and has a dished area around the pulley. It is also nearly a kilogram lighter which is good for the engine reving but may not be so good for dampening those vibrations. It is generally in much better condition so will hopefully solve the problem. I just need to clean, rustproof and paint it prior to fitting.
Getting the old pulley off was a pain as I had to remove the waterpump pulley, the nose cone and the radiator with associated coolant spills.
This kind of thing makes me wish I'd gone for a V6 or V8 engine just to get some room to work

This is the usual point the rust stops at but on this particular disco it went well beyond this and down the other side under the outrigger meaning it all had to be replaced. I contacted the previous owner to find out how it could have got this bad..turns out he used to dunk the back end in the sea all the time pulling his boat out of the water..the water would have been trapped inside the chassis and it rotted from the inside out..also obvious was the total lack of any kind of rustproofing from new

Alfa Romeo made a move in the early 1970s to a more mainstream market with the Sud, which paid off even if they were another Italian car that corroded quicker than the should have.
With a slight irony they are sharing a page with Endrust Auto-Truck Rustproofing.
I had a try at looking up the registration of the Sherpa, but the closest I could find wih a result was KOX122P which was a brown Birmingham registered Wolseley 2200 Auto last taxed on 29 September 1988, which was probably good going for an early wedge.

All that remains of this World War II Allan Williams Turret, is the sunken steel pit, which is full of water and leaves, also easy to miss. The ''key'' shaped pit can still be made out, to the left of the track, near the field opening.

Pillbox or not a pillbox ? This defensive structure is in the form of a metal turret, which could be rotated through a full 360 degrees, set above a steel and brick-lined pit. It was designed for a machine gun to be fired either through the front loophole, which was further protected by shutters, or through the circular opening in the roof in a light anti-aircraft role.
According to the manufacturer, it was suitable for any of these, Vickers, Bren, Hotchkiss or Lewis machine guns, in either a ground defence or anti-aircraft role, or a Boys anti-tank rifle or rifle grenade for ground defence. Weapon change requires selection of an appropriate bracket. The army did not favour the design – most were installed at airfields.
The turret was designed by A.H. Williams in conjunction with Colonel V.T.R. Ford and Lieutenant Williamson. Williams was the Managing Director of Rustproof Metal Windows Company in Saltney, Chester where the turrets were produced. The company had been engaged in war work since 1939, mainly manufacturing ammunition boxes for the Admiralty using a patented galvanising process.
The turret had a garrison of two men or, if necessary three men, for whom there were folding seats inside. One man could rotate the cupola, which was on roller bearings, it would require 15lb of force to move it. According to the manufacturer, four men could dig the position out and erect the turret ready for firing in two hours and remove it completely in 30 minutes. Cost was around £125. Nearly 200 Allan Williams Turrets were made and installed, but salvaging of the metal after the war means that only around 33 remain.

'twill fit ......... it will fit.
Good to know that they were rustproof! My Grandmother had 2 pairs; the first was for serious restraint and was braced by whalebones; the second was less formal and was braced by thin strips of covered metal of a bendy consistency which fitted in to vertical "pockets" shown on the left model. The strips, being very whippy, could also be used for disciplinary purposes, causing temporary discomfort but leaving no bruises!

High Intensity Discharge lighting is light from a plasma discharge rather than a filament. We have stayed away from the really cheap rubbish that you can buy but have also stayed away from the named brand as they are exactly the same as what we sell. We just don’t charge silly prices and our fitting service is very good too. The bikes below are fittings that we have done from all 4 lights on a BMW R1200GS Adventure to a BMW GT. H.I.D Conversion Kits provide more than 300 percent more light than a Halogen bulb. The clear white light produced by H.I.D Conversion Kits is similar to daylight, reflecting road markings and signs better than conventional lighting.
In general, HID bulbs are able to take a lot more punishment than standard filament halogen bulbs. Why? Several reasons. Firstly because they do not run as hot as halogen bulbs (because HID is a more efficient system for turning electrical energy into light, it wastes much less as heat). Without the superheated glass that you get on a halogen bulb, you don’t get the propensity to shatter or explode that halogen bulbs have if any dirt or finger grease gets on the glass. Secondly, consider how a halogen bulb works. A fine strand of tungsten wire is superheated to 3200 degrees, so hot that the metal glows white (or nearly white). As a motorcycle rides over rough roads, this glowing hot wire is vibrated constantly, until it breaks. With a HID bulb, there is no wire filament. The light is created by a glowing arc between two electrodes. There is no ultrafine, superheated wire to overheat or to vibrate apart.
