A Soviet motor built to emulate the American cars of the 1950's, the GAZ-21 was actually fitted with many endearing features as opposed to their Western counterparts. The cars for starters had a high ground clearance, rugged suspension, an engine that would go forever and rustproofing the likes of which had never been seen before.
As such, it was the biggest and most luxury car available to the proletariat, and sold in high quantities for those who could actually afford it.

AKA "Trying to make the most of a shot with horrible white balance".
Gilding overall was popular in France, both for the rich look and the rustproofing properties. The process frequently involved boiling mercury, and was extremely toxic.
Textures on a zinc galvanized steel fence panel. Couldn't quite decide what to title these shots The shapes cut out of the metal struck me rather fortress-like. The fractal patterns of the thin zinc crystals reminded me of stained glass in a cathedral too and I toyed with the idea of using Photoshop to drop some stained glass into the cut-outs.

The GAZ M21 Volga, the first car to carry the Volga name, was developed in the early 1950s. Volgas were built to last in the harsh climate and rough roads of the Soviet Union, with high ground clearance (what gives it a specific "high" look, contrary to "low-long-sleek" look of Western cars of resembling design), rugged suspension, strong and forgiving engine, and rustproofing on a scale unheard of in the 1950s.
The car is famous for its unusual features: front bench seat, column transmission shifter, smooth 1950s design.

This car ain't so old, but it's rare because these things were rustbuckets. They were assembled locally without the beneift of rustproofing. My dad bought one new when I was a little kid of about 2 and when I turn 4, it had completely rusted out. Its unibody construction and lack of spares drove him to sell it for peanuts and buy a much better UK-assembled Cortina Mk.V Ghia edition which he kept for more than a decade without trouble.

The GAZ M21 Volga is an automobile produced in the Soviet Union by GAZ (Gorkovsky Avtomobilniy Zavod, in English "Gorky automobile factory") from 1956 to 1970. The first car to carry the Volga name, it was developed in the early 1950s. Volgas were built with high ground clearance (which gives it a specific "high" look, contrary to "low-long-sleek" look of Western cars of similar design), rugged suspension, strong and forgiving engine, and rustproofing on a scale unheard of in the 1950s.
I love construction sites! Especially when the raw structure is up. (Actually, I like it when the heavy equipment is sculpting the earth, too)
Hangers on the clothes for scale comparison. Note the bigger white one on the grey "jacket" for wider necked jackets and the like.

The first Land Rover was designed in 1948 in the United Kingdom (on the island of Anglesey in Wales) by Maurice Wilks, chief designer at the British car company Rover on his farm in Newborough, Anglesey. It is said that he was inspired by an American World War II Jeep that he used one summer at his holiday home in Wales. The first Land Rover prototype, later nicknamed 'Centre Steer', was built on a Jeep chassis. A distinctive feature is their bodies, constructed of a lightweight rustproof proprietary alloy of aluminium and magnesium called Birmabright. This material was used because of the post-war steel shortage and the plentiful supply of post-war aircraft aluminium. This metal's resistance to corrosion was one of the factors that allowed the vehicle to build up a reputation for longevity in the toughest conditions. Land Rover once advertised that 75% of all vehicles ever built are still in use. In fact, Land Rover drivers sometimes refer to other makes of 4x4 as "disposables". The early choice of colour was dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so early vehicles only came in various shades of light green; all models until recently feature sturdy box section ladder-frame chassis.
Seen on the silver Accord. Not uncommon for the surviving older Japanese cars to have been rustproofed when new, whether that's been the sole reason for their survival or been a side-effect of careful ownership and the cars had a fairly easy life I don't know.
I've seen rustproofed cars which have suffered badly!

One of the last pre-facelift models. It appears to have had a hell of a lot of rustproofing done and looks rather shabby. It is however taxed until late 2011 so it's not going to the scrapyard any time soon by the look of things.
I wonder if the Golf Mk2 behind it is owned by the same person/people. It's also pretty shabby looking but again taxed well into next year.

‘Ikea to start selling bikes” is a nightmare headline for the friendly independent bike shop. Not only could the Swedish behemoth take any custom the internet hasn’t already siphoned off, but the bike shop will end up having to fix those inevitable DIY bike-building disasters when people who call saddles “seats” are let loose with some Allen keys... stated an article in The Guardian.
Ikea say...
- 25-year limited warranty on the frame and 10-year limited warranty on the belt drive.
- This bicycle is powered by a belt drive, which is a rustproof, durable and maintenance-free alternative to a regular chain.
- The front disc brake and rear coaster brake gives efficient braking.
- The rustproof aluminium frame is coated with 2 layers of lacquer to make it extra resistant to scratching, road salt and mud.
- The aluminium frame makes the bike lightweight and easy to bring with you.
- The automatic 2-gear system is integrated into the rear hub, so there are no wires that rust, break or need regular maintenance.
- You can adjust the height and angle of the handlebar to suit your height and preferred riding position.

Tyres are 25 mm Michelin Krylion Carbon, Black/Grey.
Have to say that I appretiate the fact that I've got the frame free from the "Fatties Fit Fine" decals normally found on the chainstays. Less is more. Some other frames are really defaced by under-the-clearcoat decals detailing the manufacturers web address.
Sprayed the innards of the frame with linseed oil for rustproofing.

It's ГАЗ 21 - The GAZ M21 Volga, the first car to carry the Volga name, was developed in the early 1950s. When in 1959 the 6-cylinder line of GAZ cars was discontinued, Volga M-21 became the biggest and most luxurious car officially sold to individual owners in the USSR in large quantities, though its price was very high and made it unavailable for most car buyers.
We found it accidentally, walking on the streets. The car is restored and looks like.. like it's 1950 now and it comes off the assembly line an hour ago ))
The interior was washed with detergent, a stiff brush, and hot water. It was allowed to dry in the sun for a few hours before being returned to the garage.
This photo was taken after the doors were rustproofed and the mechanisms were lubed. The new clear plastic moisture shields were installed as were the cleaned rear seat belts.
Awesome ghost sign, former 19th Street Great White Way, Downtown Granite City, IL. The sign touts the corsets as being "RUST-PROOF."
Edited January 20, 2007, to note that this building has been senselessly demolished within the past few weeks.
Rest in peace, 19th Street Great White Way.
6 months tax & a years MOT. Under £130 including the car. I have trade insurance so I just added it to the policy, but even if it needed insurance I`d have still had it on the road for under £350!
Unbelievable!
Its coughing a bit due to the stale petrol remaining, but I`d expect that to largely go in the next 2 fill ups, then it can be serviced (dont want to make new plugs dirty with the stale petrol), the oils still clean though!
Its not fast, it doesnt handle as well as the Uno, its much noisier, only has 4 gears & is sub-basic trim wise, but its a good honest car that promises to do 45-60mpg... superb!
I`ll change the passenger door, I`ll put the old steels (with wider tyres & trims) from my Uno on it & I`ll rustproof it.
It should then keep going for another 21 years with under £200 worth of servicing, MOTing & taxing a year, provided my friend (& his 2 heavyweight dogs) dont kill it in the meantime....
Thats right, it costs the same to run per YEAR as a new car depreciates in a DAY!
As punch said, thats the way to do it!
Washed, lubed, rustproofed, sound deadened and new plastic moisture shield installed with new 3M strip caulk.
Continued my cleanup of the Porsche wheel wells, suspension and underside.... everything is turning out fantastic with minimal effort, but a borrowed electric power washer did the trick, going to leave the brown Porsche factory rustproofing wax, think it looks incredibly cool.
These were atop virtually all mafac brake levers from the 1950s to the 70s. Later model levers began to feature full wrap-around hoods like most other brakes even the adjusters were covered to match and these were considered the poor relations - used for the lower range models. The light blue hoods in this style, produced during the 1950s, can now command prices well over $100 US on eBay auctions.
The core of the adjuster was a nice touch. It has a hex sided "nut" at the center which fitted a recess in the rubber which kept it from rotating. The bottom of that part extended down to function as an anchor for the front end of the rubber pad. The threaded shaft was rustproof silid brass although the knurled outer shell of the adjuster (the part which actually moved) was nickel or chrome plated and vulnerable to corrosion. The knurled tops later became larger in diameter these were just clean and simple and functioned just as well.
