Rod set out to create a new kind of owner's workshop manual - friendly, easy to understand, easy to use and, yet, more detailed than any other manual currently available: two years later Rod's MX-5 manual was the result. Rod, and fellow enthusiasts Pete and Judith, stripped down an MX-5 in an ordinary domestic garage using ordinary tools and, in the process, took over 1500 step-by-step photographs. The result of all this work is a superbly detailed text which passes on to the reader every detail of important jobs, including how problems can be overcome without resorting to special tools. This manual even tells the reader the size of nuts and bolts so they can start work with the right tools and all clearances and torque values are given in the text as the reader needs them. At paragraph level, a unique symbol system provides cross-references or tells the reader that there are helpful associated photos, drawings and tables. The dreaded words "reassembly is a reversal of the dismantling procedure" are banned and every task, from changing a bulb to rebuilding the gearbox, is described in full. Besides detailed coverage of maintenance and repairs, this manual includes advice on rustproofing, cosmetic tuning and mechanical tuning. Rod's manual was prepared with the assistance of Mazda.
The manual applies to all 1.6 litre models built between 1989 & 1995. Most of the manual is relevant to later 1.6 litre models too.

Considerable rust on the offside arch, with paintwork splits, heavy corrosion within the inner arch and further corrosion behind the bumper.
Bubbling spread partway to the sills.
After: Repairs to the petrol cap area,
Brand new arches fitted, lots of rusted metal an years of filler cut from the car and replaced, welded, rustproofed and painted.
Fresh metal, rustproofing and paint to the sills also.
So from the 914's inception every design house in Europe tried their hand at building a better 914. The Ital Design Tapiro is arguably the best of them, though the Frua bodied Hispano-Aleman came awfully close.
Porsche and VW, of course, ignored the controversy and kept building the 914 through 1976 when it was replaced by the 924.
Now, if they had only rustproofed the dang things (at least around the battery tray) we would have a lot more of them to select from nowadays.....
We used a 6" PVC cap for the front can because it was rustproof and far more durable than the traditional coffee can. The back can is also PVC, but it is a 3" coupler for PVC. The end cap was simply not tall enough. The plastic in the bottom of the 6 " can should add a lot of bounce-out difficulty.
"Silver Owlet"

The colors of the Silver Owlet lend themselves to the secluded woodland habitat preferred by the Easter Screech Owl. The depthc and rounded shape mimic the tree cavities in which they like to nest. The forested section of North Park Village Nature Center or one of the shady tree groves in the Dan Ryan Woods would be a good location for the house. Very little of Silver Owlet is new. The base structure is a used 5-gallon paint bucket that was thoroughly cleaned for this project, the rustproof "Siding" is made from recycled alumninum soft drink cans, the wooden floor boards are left over pieces from a staircase that ai recently built, the catch chain is a re-purposed item from the last art piece that I created, adn the silver door paint is a remnant from the paint work I did on my house.

Relatively indistinguishable between Micra and March from the front, with only the hidden plate recess and colour-coded wing mirrors give it away. On topic with the comments of the last March upload, here shows the weaker Japanese rustproofing losing a battle with our weather. Much unlike the previous March.
Oddly, this 2000 model not only was imported at about a year old, but was also given an incorrect Y registration when it arrived here and was registered as a Micra. Someone was obviously being rather careless that day at the DVLA office!
It's on it's 7 owner too.
Interesting to see this has one of those anti-static strips, can't seem to find the rear foglight on this either.

I'm very excited. Tomorrow my dad and I are going to go and put down a deposit on this beauty and will soon have it to restore over the summer that I'm in Michigan. Back in San Francisco, Fiat Spiders are not that rare, but in Michigan they sure are. What makes this find even stranger is that it was the second Fiat Spider I'd seen for sale in Monroe today! How weird. I had never seen one in Michigan before... Anyway, this one is much more affordable than the other (surprisingly so), but also needs some touch-up work. That's fine, because I was looking forward to a new project. If for whatever reason, the sale doesn't go through, I'll hang my head in shame and change what I've typed here, but here's to hoping!
Here's what I'm planning to do to the car initially:
* repaint the exterior - I love the aqua blue color (rare color), so I'm going to go with it, but it needs some new shininess. It might not even need new paint. Possibly just clearcoat.
* tighten up various things - vents, visors, driver's side door latch
* replace wiper motor
* fix little bits of rust and dents. Thankfully this example was rustproofed on the undercarriage and has been in storage for nine years, so everything is pretty okay.
* get new Fiat badges (they're faded to silver), and Pininfarina badges.
* get driver's seat tear in leather fixed / reupholstered.
* that's about it!
I can't wait!

Notice that I did this step after I painted my brake calipers. I should have done this in reverse although it shouldn't matter in the end. I masked the brake disc, rubber seals, caliper and all braking surfaces. Don't forget to place plenty of newspaper on the garage floor and outer wheel well painted surfaces.

The GAZ M21 Volga, the first car to carry the Volga name, was developed in the early 1950s. Volgas were built to last in the harsh climate and rough roads of the Soviet Union, with high ground clearance (what gives it a specific "high" look, contrary to "low-long-sleek" look of Western cars of resembling design), rugged suspension, strong and forgiving engine, and rustproofing on a scale unheard of in the 1950s.
The Volga was stylistically in line with the major United States manufacturers of the period, and incorporated such then-luxury features as the reclining front seat, cigarette lighter, heater, windshield washer and 3-wave radio.
When in 1959 the 6-cylinder line of GAZ cars was discontinued, Volga M-21 became the biggest and most luxurious car officially sold to individual owners in the USSR in large quantities, though its price was very high and made it unavailable for most car buyers.
