Central Park, New York City
Monday, October 10, 1983
Here's a shot from back when travelling to the US was actually something I did fairly often. New York City is an amazing place. Maybe someday, crossing the border is something I'll reconsider doing.
Those more recently familiar with New York's Central Park will not likely recognize this ugly chain-link fence around the Central Park Reservoir - now renamed Onassis Lake - but usually referred to now as "The Lake."
It was erected in 1926 as a measure to prevent the hundreds of suicides by people jumping the original 1800s 4-foot cast iron fence. In 2003, it was removed and replaced with a replica of the original pre-1926 fence.
The twin Gothic towers in the background on Central Park West are the 27-story San Remo apartments. Famous residents have included Steven Spielberg, Steve Jobs, Bono and Steve Martin.
I loved Kodachrome, but like with all films, it wasn't perfect. It didn't handle open shade well, or hazy days. Two strikes against me with this shot from 1983. It had a bluish cast that struck me as visually unappealing. Fortunately, I had a policy back then of not throwing away out-takes, so a recent wade through my old slides had me giving it a second look as a candidate for scanning as a black and white.
I think it was the right decision. Black and white does it justice.
OK, so how do I know the exact date? I remember it was Columbus Day, and in 1983, it fell on Monday, October 10.

The Old Courthouse in the background was the original courthouse for St.Louis and today is part of the Gateway Arch National Park.
