Ruby in her prom dress. Photos taken in Downtown Spartanburg, Hatcher Gardens, and at a neighbor's private garden.
My first photo of one of these. It was very hard to focus on his as he was the same color as the leaves from the back and so tuny the sutofocus was not picking him up!. Very grainy from the high ISO. Thiis is my first ever hummingbid captured. They fly so fast and never stop! He was actually perched in this branch! I've never seen one perched- he was there for a few minutes but due to the focus issue this is the only decent shot I got.

September 16, 2007. Ruby-throated hummingbird at a distance of 12 feet with a 200mm Mamiya-Sekor M-thread lens on a Pentax istDS DSLR, handheld. ISO setting was 800, shutter-priority autoexposure. Time of day was about 11 a.m.
The cutout metal bird is 4 inches tall and 6 inches wide, so this little guy is about 3-plus inches from tip of beak to tip of tail.
Ruby Beach, Washington. I'll never forget the name of this beach as we met the best puppy named "Ruby" owned by a great couple from Seattle.
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have many skeletal and flight muscle adaptations which allow the bird great agility in flight. Muscles make up 25-30% of their body weight, and they have long, bladelike wings that, unlike the wings of other birds, connect to the body only from the shoulder joint. This adaptation allows the wing to rotate almost 180°, enabling the bird to fly not only forward but also straight up and down, sideways, and backwards, and to hover in front of flowers as it feeds on nectar and insects.
During hovering, ruby-throated hummingbird wings beat 55x/sec, 61x/sec when moving backwards, and at least 75x/sec when moving forward.
RUBY is a lovely SharPei mix who’s about 18 months old. She’s a gentle, friendly young dog who LOVES to chase a ball – she’ll even bring it back so you can throw it again :-)
She’s also very food-motivated and attentive, so she’ll be fun to take to obedience class, and she seems to get along with other dogs.
Ruby will be a wonderful family companion.
