View over Rippon Vineyard. April 30, 2016 Central Otago in the South Island of New Zealand.
The land upon which Rippon stands has been in the Mills family since 1913. The primary interest of all who work at Rippon is to grow wines which are an accurate reflection of the property. All Rippon wines are produced from the single vineyard on the shores of Lake Wanaka.
Central Otago: the only continental climate in New Zealand viticulture with high ultra violet light, long sunshine hours and highly refractive soils.
Wanaka: a more temperate climate relative to the rest of Central Otago due to its close proximity to the dividing mountains of the Southern Alps.
Lake Wanaka: the temperance of this large thermal mass, coupled with the protective nature of Ruby Island further softens Rippon’s microclimate.
Schist: the metamorphic mother rock, rich in foliated mica and quartzite is deposited as glacial moraines, coarse-layered gravels, ancient lake-bed clays and wind-blown loess.
Two ruby-throated hummingbirds gracefully hover around a vibrant red feeder, with their delicate wings blurred from rapid movement. Set against a clean, bright background, the focus is on the birds' vibrant feathers and the feeder's striking color!!!

I've been trying to create brighter images, but this hummingbird only allowed me the chance to snag one photo before flying off, meaning I was not able to adjust the settings. The best laid plans of mice and men...

RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD-07215016.jpg
Now the garden is filled with hummingbirds. We all seem to like my new favourite flower, the crocosmia. What a fabulous combo they are! It was a bit hard dashing around all the garden flowers, pots, lights, and so on to catch the little hummingbirds as they dashed around. It was windy, too (so all hand-held). The little hummers are so intent on their feeders and flowers that they hardly mind my presence, at all... though they zip by so fast.

This experiment was an attempt to recreate the fluorescence of chromium activated corundum (aka 'ruby'). Aluminum hydroxide was mixed with 1-4 drops of Cr(III) oxide in a basic solution. This was placed on a small amount of aluminum sulfate in an aluminum foil container and a bit of water was added.
The sample was then heated, first with a propane torch until the water was removed and then with a MAPP gas torch until the aluminum sulfate expanded into foam, trapping the aluminum hydroxide which was calcined into aluminum oxide by the torch's flame. (at least that was the plan)
Shown also is a natural ruby from Mysore, India.

Joe Parks and I celebrated this year's Thanksgiving in beautiful, FREEZING cold Olympic National Park. I'd been hoping to visit Olympic for years, and it didn't disappoint! We spent the better part of Thursday driving up from Portland, arriving just in time to catch the sun going down over Ruby Beach.
