This is the preferred perch for this male ruby-throated hummingbird. Sure, it perches other places, but not as much as this perch. As you can see, it can't stay long before it is time to launch another defense of his territory.

A flash of green and red, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is eastern North America’s sole breeding hummingbird. These brilliant, tiny, precision-flying creatures glitter like jewels in the full sun, then vanish with a zip toward the next nectar source. Feeders and flower gardens are great ways to attract these birds, and some people turn their yards into buzzing clouds of hummingbirds each summer. Enjoy them while they’re around; by early fall they’re bound for Central America, with many crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight.

This week’s theme in The Wire Artisans Guild’s weekly challenge was ‘Ruby Treasure’. At first I was stomped and didn’t have a clue what to make. But shifting my thoughts from ‘ruby’ to ‘treasure’ released the flow and I started to think about what I treasure most in the world. So I poured all my love for creating jewellery into this piece, thinking about my children, how much I treasure them and what a blessing they are. (Even though the drive me nuts sometimes…:)

This locket will hold whatever you treasure most. One side is completely made in sterling silver wire and with the letter ‘T’ for Treasure on it. The other side is covered to the brim in tiny faceted rondelles of ruby, over 100 of them, closely bound to create a dome shape.

On the inside, the silver wire side is lined in magenta coloured satin-silk. I carefully singed the fabric to prevent fraying and it is not glued or sown on to the locket. It stays in plays by hooking on to tiny ends of wire underneath it. (I’ve shaken the locket quite hard to see if the lining would fall out, bit it stayed firmly in place.) This side also holds the coiled wire, that you can place a photo or hang a special treasure from.

It closes with a bow of thin magenta coloured ribbon of satin-silk. This is ribbon also singed, ever so slightly, to prevent fraying of the ends.

The locket hangs from a simple yet gorgeous sterling silver chain, just over 83 cm (32”) long that closes with my handmade hook style clasp.

Admittedly, I was surprised to see this many Ruby-throats still hanging around. The temperatures have been pushing the 80s during the day, but cooling overnight in the Memphis area.

Males with full ruby throats are so rare at the English Garden, Winnipeg's main hummingbird accumulation spot during the out migration, that I had never seen one in 5 migrations until now. Males migrate much sooner than females and traditionally by-pass the Garden.

This fellow was being harassed repeatedly by females, which made him much harder to photograph.

A tiny bird seemingly overflowing with energy, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet forages almost frantically through lower branches of shrubs and trees. Its habit of constantly flicking its wings is a key identification clue. Smaller than a warbler or chickadee, this plain green-gray bird has a white eyering and a white bar on the wing. Alas, the male’s brilliant ruby crown patch usually stays hidden—your best chance to see it is to find an excited male singing in spring or summer.
