A flash of green and red, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is eastern North America’s sole breeding hummingbird. These brilliant, tiny, precision-flying creatures glitter like jewels in the full sun, then vanish with a zip toward the next nectar source. Feeders and flower gardens are great ways to attract these birds, and some people turn their yards into buzzing clouds of hummingbirds each summer. Enjoy them while they’re around; by early fall they’re bound for Central America, with many crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight.

I have all but mailed backyard open house invitations out to the hummingbird community! 💌📬📮I have 3 feeders out and have host of plants planted to attract them. I've gone through at least 2-3 lbs of sugar keeping them clean and filled. No hummers. UNTIL TODAY! Yay! Now I hope they will stay!

This week’s theme in The Wire Artisans Guild’s weekly challenge was ‘Ruby Treasure’. At first I was stomped and didn’t have a clue what to make. But shifting my thoughts from ‘ruby’ to ‘treasure’ released the flow and I started to think about what I treasure most in the world. So I poured all my love for creating jewellery into this piece, thinking about my children, how much I treasure them and what a blessing they are. (Even though the drive me nuts sometimes…:)

This locket will hold whatever you treasure most. One side is completely made in sterling silver wire and with the letter ‘T’ for Treasure on it. The other side is covered to the brim in tiny faceted rondelles of ruby, over 100 of them, closely bound to create a dome shape.

On the inside, the silver wire side is lined in magenta coloured satin-silk. I carefully singed the fabric to prevent fraying and it is not glued or sown on to the locket. It stays in plays by hooking on to tiny ends of wire underneath it. (I’ve shaken the locket quite hard to see if the lining would fall out, bit it stayed firmly in place.) This side also holds the coiled wire, that you can place a photo or hang a special treasure from.

It closes with a bow of thin magenta coloured ribbon of satin-silk. This is ribbon also singed, ever so slightly, to prevent fraying of the ends.

The locket hangs from a simple yet gorgeous sterling silver chain, just over 83 cm (32”) long that closes with my handmade hook style clasp.

We had our Ruby Wedding anniversary on the 25th of Jan this year. Our friends gave us a Ruby Anniversary Rose. The poor thing got hammered in the winds we had earlier in the year but has given us one very small rose that smells beautiful.

The Ruby Theater is a small movie theater in Chelan, Washington. Built in 1913, it was named after Ruby Potter, the daughter of its manager, Frank Potter. The original owners were Herbert R. Kingman and Morrison M. Kingman. Original seating capacity was 225 on the main level and 125 in the balcony. The theater was equipped as a cinema and as a vaudeville house. With the exception of 1972-1974, the Ruby has been showing movies for over ninety years, and is one of the oldest movie theaters in Washington.

This tiny bird flitted around me for a good ten minutes. It was hunting for insects that were wintering under the holly leaves. It spent much energy hover-flying under the leaves.

An interesting species fact: The female Kinglet will lay a large clutch of eggs with the weight of the eggs equal to the weight of the bird.

Males with full ruby throats are so rare at the English Garden, Winnipeg's main hummingbird accumulation spot during the out migration, that I had never seen one in 5 migrations until now. Males migrate much sooner than females and traditionally by-pass the Garden.

This fellow was being harassed repeatedly by females, which made him much harder to photograph.

The Ruby Tiger Moth (Phragmatobia fuliginosa) derives its name from its pinky red forewings. One or two black spots are usually evident in the middle of the forewings and the top half of the legs are covered in red or brown hairs and the upper leg coated in red hair. The abdomen is red with black markings. The underwings are most commonly a subtle, reddy pink with black markings.

Across the UK the Ruby Tigers show a gradual variation in colour, with the brightest individuals in the south, and much duller specimens in Scotland.

Ruby Tigers are fairly widespread throughout Britain, and are common in places. They can be found on downland, heathland and sand-dunes and in woodland clearings, farmland and gardens.

They are double-brooded in the south, flying in April to June and again in August and September. In the north there is just one generation, in June. The larvae are polyphagous, feeding on a number of herbaceous plants.

5310 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA

This location opened in July 2005 and closed on March 3rd, 2018. It became a First Watch on February 8th, 2021.

The site originally housed My Sisters Restaurant, which opened on July 16th, 1953. It became The Broadmoor Fine Foods/Broadmoor Teletray Drive Inn/Broadmoor Restaurant on July 14th, 1954, Shoney's Big Boy on October 12th, 1958, which relocated here in spring 1976, Ground Round in winter 1982, which closed in April 1994, and Richmond Finance Company in the late 1990s.

My sweet daughter in law took this shot. Ruby is wearing a hat and bib that I bought in the hospital gift shop. She is still in the hospital and may go home tomorrow. This was the closest we could get to a photo shoot!!! Thank you for your kind well wishes and comments!

Note: "Ruby-chan" concept is something I discovered in ancient Ruby mascot discussions. Fox Small is a creation of the great Why the Lucky Stiff.
