I've got a ruby red desire
Like a virus like my last hope
I've got a ruby red desire
I've got to hear the red bird sing
I've got to rip this cord
And rinse this lazy blood
Clear a path and walk away
I've been waiting for the sky to fall
I've been thinking I could lose it all
I've been waiting for the safety net
Tell myself that I'm not ready yet
And every memory's a dream
And each uncertainty reminds me why
I saw a kid outside playing by a moongate
Making paper things that fly
I've been waiting for the sky to fall
I've been worried I could lose it all
I've been waiting for the safety net
Tell myself that I'm not ready yet
I want to live
I want to live
I want to live

Ruby-throated hummingbird (f)
Photographed at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Ingleside, Ontario.
While the sun goes down, the lights go up..
'09 was quite a productive year for me (the latter half of it anyway). There were a couple of personal faves, but there can only be one shot.. and this is it.
Why have I chosen this? I was working with new equipment and barely got into strobing, but I was so pleased with how this turned out. Actually, I was sorta running like a chicken with its head cut off because the sun had already gone over the mountain, and I still had a handful to shots to get (had to cut 4 frames and the frontis out because there was no more time!).. still, the enthusiasm that went into this shot by all of those involved make this my candidate for Flickr's "Best of 2009." tk 2 Dec 09

A ruby-crowned kinglet perched on a thin branch, surrounded by a blur of leaves and twigs. The bird's greenish-gray plumage blends harmoniously with the natural background!!!
The hummingbirds certainly enjoyed the sugar water I put out for them, but the natural stuff is still good too.
Los colibríes disfrutaron mucho del agua azucarada que les dejaba, pero el néctar natural todavía es bueno.

Two ruby-throated hummingbirds gracefully hover around a vibrant red feeder, with their delicate wings blurred from rapid movement. Set against a clean, bright background, the focus is on the birds' vibrant feathers and the feeder's striking color!!!

This experiment was an attempt to recreate the fluorescence of chromium activated corundum (aka 'ruby'). Aluminum hydroxide was mixed with 1-4 drops of Cr(III) oxide in a basic solution. This was placed on a small amount of aluminum sulfate in an aluminum foil container and a bit of water was added.
The sample was then heated, first with a propane torch until the water was removed and then with a MAPP gas torch until the aluminum sulfate expanded into foam, trapping the aluminum hydroxide which was calcined into aluminum oxide by the torch's flame. (at least that was the plan)
Shown also is a natural ruby from Mysore, India.

Now the garden is filled with hummingbirds. We all seem to like my new favourite flower, the crocosmia. What a fabulous combo they are! It was a bit hard dashing around all the garden flowers, pots, lights, and so on to catch the little hummingbirds as they dashed around. It was windy, too (so all hand-held). The little hummers are so intent on their feeders and flowers that they hardly mind my presence, at all... though they zip by so fast.

Ruby and Heidi decided it was such a nice day, this seat would be just right for a picnic, shame we did'nt have one
Ruby was waiting for a friend at Flinders Street station and agreed to get her great outfit into the light. The sun was setting behind her and also reflecting off the windows from a tall building to the right. She also didn't want a copy of the shot so here is my made up story about her...
Ruby is actually a spy for Trinidad, but because their government is so laid back, they don't care when or if she files reports, so she's free to blast around town and just rewrite whatever she finds on Twitter.
Ruby-crowned Kinglet singing away. Just wish the light had been better to get the right depth of field :0)
Goodbye Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you...
