The wood stork is a large American wading bird in the stork family. It appears all white on the ground, with blackish-gray legs and pink feet. In flight, the trailing edge of the wings is black. The head is dark brown with a bald, black face, and the thick down-curved bill is dusky yellow. Juvenile birds are a duller version of the adult, generally browner on the neck, and with a paler bill. The bare head and the long bill, which can measure up to ten inches in length, render the wood stork distinctive from other large waders in its range. Fun to observe.

nest of 3 fledged youths got damaged in a hurricane, but they're not ready to leave home; only one can fit on what remains, so the three have fallen to fighting over it. the bickering is audible a mile away.

My favorite egret family - the one from a couple of posts ago - kept engaging in this rather odd behavior. That is Mom that they seem to be biting. The chicks would make a racket, she'd finally lean down to them and they would all mouth her head. I don't know what this is all about, but it certainly is a different game!!
Happy Tuesday y'all!!
There were constant spats and squabbles the morning I watched these burrowing owl chicks. These two were really getting into it – note the one on the right has remnants of breakfast on its beak. How ferocious!
As a note – the one on the right was the flying owl in the background of my previous post. The one on the left is not the one in the foreground of the other image but another sibling that evidently did not like its brother or sister being picked on. Leave him alone and pick on me instead! Tag team!
Thanks so much for your views, faves and comments!

These siblings got together for as photoshoot in the Malpass Library on the campus of Western Illinois University back in 2015. Their mother asked if I could send her the pictures again... and having learned a great deal about post processing since then, I spent some time reworking the images. I particularly liked this humous pose.

There's a pretty girl around. and I think these two are having a slight disagreement about who gets first quack at her.....
The parents of this Common Merganser family decided it was time to find a rock in the middle of the San Juan and sun. These two juvies don't want to share a rock.
Our beautiful world, pass it on.
The youngsters are growing up, not flying yet but it won't be long. This heated squabble way up in the tree caught my attention and the attention of their parent that arrived with a confusing flurry of wings and some food to settle this pair down.
Harsh light - but thats when they're active.
This evening, 8-29-19, at around 2015 hours, the one hundredth annual rivalry American Football game between the University of Utah and Brigham Young University (aka the Y) begins. This year’s BYU-Utah football game is being billed as the biggest in the history of the rivalry with the 50,000 seat Lavell Edwards Stadium completely sold out. As you can see from the oversized banner displayed along I-15 between the U of U's Salt Lake City home and the Provo home of BYU some people take this long standing rivalry very, very seriously.
Should you wish to see what all the fuss is about the game will air live on ESPN.
UPDATE 8-30-19 -- Utah beat BYU 20 to 12 despite the efforts of this super fan... There is always next year...
The McMaster boys, Ryan (303) and Jamie (199) battle it out on their vintage CZs. The Northern Ireland Classic Scrambles Club meet at Ballystockart, round three of the championship.
I don't like to post too many sunsets. there are so many sunset and sunrise shots out there that you need to have something extra to make a photo special.
I took this on the cusp of dusk just as the streetlights were lighting up.
Mostar was battered by the civil war and is still a deeply divided city. Christians and Muslims maintain a rivalry that I find worryingly familiar from my experience of Northern Ireland. The rivalry presents itself most visibly to tourists in the architecture. Christians have built a church steeple that is completely out of proportion to it’s adjoining church - just so that their structure is taller than any of the Muslim ones. They’ve also appropriated the highest point overlooking the town for the cross. In the photo, as well the minarets of Islam, you can just make out the newer, bigger cross on top of the hill.
Within a herd of wild horses, the leader, the white horse in the center, chases away a rival on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, Oregon, USA. The site is home to the Warm Springs Confederation of Tribes (the Wasco, Tenino and the Paiute). Native Americans on the edge of the Great Plains like the Paiute were among the greatest horsemen in the world in the 19th Century.
just up the road from his more famous brothers lurking in the background stands this fella - I like him, he hasn't wronged me photographically like his siblings have and there was no water in my boots at the end of our meeting
. . . Which ever sibling stretches it's neck out the farthest, and opens it's mouth the widest will probably get that tasty meal! Watching these baby tree Swallows stretch and open wide reminds me of my brother and I as children fighting for that last piece of steak!
Have a great week Facebook and Flickr friends!
Kyoko, knowing her young sister has been practicing the unicycling a lot lately, tried to see how she can keep up with her little sister. Being three years older than Yoko and being very athletic, Kyoko is always better than Yoko at almost everything, obviously. Unicycling is probably the only thing with which Yoko is more advanced, and more enthusiastic about. After 30 minutes of practice, Kyoko was getting decently better, but still was not nearly as good as Yoko. She did not say anything, just quietly watched Yoko doing her thing with pride. Now I can not wait to see how Kyoko will respond to this whole situation. She is a young woman with pride, so I assume she will secretly practice the unicycling until she will be as good as Yoko, but I somehow hope she will leave it as "Yoko's thing", and will not care. Sometimes, it is good for a younger sister (brother) to have something that she (he) can say "I am better than you" to her (his) sister (brother). It is a nice confidence booster :)
