Morrigan and Luke paused long enough for me to get this gorgeous picture of them on our vacation. Ohau has been lovely for us all so far. We have enjoyed everything from beach sunrises and sunsets, to scuba diving and more. Uncle Caleb even got engaged. Luke has begun a rivalry with the peacock that strolls by our bungalow deck every day, but that was to be expected with him.

As the sun was setting the starlings were still hunting for that late night snack!

I’m working a collection of images demonstrating Bird Aggression. While going through my photos I ran into this one which I thought I’d post. I’ve been shooting eagles a lot lately here in South Florida, where we have the opportunity to observe the nesting cycle from start to finish. There is no concentration of eagles and hence, little eagle on eagle aggression. But in places where eagles congregate, particularly in the winter, eagle confrontation is common. In this image, one juvenile bald eagle looks on as two others engage in a minor skirmish. These two Sandhill Crane colts are about three weeks old. They took time off from following Mom around and learning how to forage to have a little friendly challenge match. It only lasted for a few seconds and all ended well.

These two mule deer bucks went at it for a while and then just walked away together as if nothing happened. It was unclear who won. Or maybe just a practice round?

One of these young grizzlies had occupied the high ground atop a pile of deadfall in the lush Great Bear Rainforest, while the other was keen to climb up there too. Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, BC.

I'm thinking that maybe Tug has finally learned that sometimes it's best to let your big sister get to mom before you.
These owlet siblings are both friends and rivals. The larger one on the right periodically tries to assert its dominance. Seen in north Walnut Creek, California.
I came home to find that, much to Mel's dismay, Louis had swooped top spot in the new kitty condo we bought them for Christmas so there was Mel camped out underneath, somewhat perturbed as he waited for the split second Louis moved so he could snatch back the spot for himself.
It paid off. Once Louis got up for a bite to eat, Mel was right in there and is not about to give it up that easily. He'll likely camp out all night. These two just crack me up. Good ol' sibling rivalry :-)

Bird food is mostly always plentiful in my yard, but during this storm I saw very few of the usual skirmishes among the birds. I wonder if they were just more focussed on eating as much as they could?
House Finch and American Goldfinch
Housebound for the weekend of April 14 and 15 due to a severe wintery (!) spring storm, I decided to photograph my backyard friends dealing with the ice pellets, snow, freezing rain, sleet, and wind. This is one in a series of those images.
These youngsters appear to have a bit of a disagreement.

As Winter gives way to Spring, American Shad begin their journey from the Atlantic up freshwater rivers to spawn. For whatever reason, Bald Eagles seem to prefer take another's meal rather than put in the work in themselves. Here, an adult stares down a potential challenger looking to pilfer a hard won catch.
