Another Flickr member has the head shot of this mermaid- by this point in the day, we were just off the rain tour and wandering the gift shops.
All in all, a wonderful day.
This is the rig I use with my LX3. It's a Brooxes BDKK to wich I added a shutter servo (see detailed view here). It's AURICO controlled and powered by a 3.7V 300mAh Lipo. Total weight (rig + camera) is 588g.
Homemade rig constructed by my dad and myself.
The total cost of all the parts was about $25.
The arm was the hardest part to make, something that 99% of people will not be able to do on their own. Pure aluminum and machined in a metal shop. It was hard, but saved a lot of money. Took roughly 2 hours to build the whole thing. There are companies that sell arms like this, but can cost upwards of $100.
Its very sturdy with the 4 suction cups. If I didn't think it could hold my camera I would never put it on there. Usually, the suction cups are closer to the edge of the car to reduce shake/vibration. It's much easier to get good shots with 2 people, 1 pushing the car and the other releasing the shutter. But 1 person is just as easy.

A big red rig pulls through the stop sign at Beltline and Old Richburg Road in an industrial area of Chester, South Carolina.

The Jack Bates Drilling Rig moored beside Cromarty Links. She being supplied by the MV Rosehaugh, which was the Kessock Ferry between Inverness and the Black Isle until replaced by the Kessock Bridge in 1984. After serving as a Ferry at Corran in Lochaber, she is now a rig supply vessel in the Cromarty Firth.
Since 2005 the Jack Bates has been working in the Bass Straight between Tasmania and Australia.
